N7 - VIKING decorated seax scramasax type knife VGC marked blade C10-12th
A well above average condition and quality viking knife dating c12th at the latest this is seax/scramasax shape so very traditional viking in design. This was found in europe by a detectorist. Condition is fabulous, it is not your usual rusty relic it only needs a light wire brushing, i left it as it came to me 100% as found. Size is just over 6 1/2 inches, it is full length even the tip still has the sharp point which is nearly always corroded with ground finds. What makes this unusual is the fact that it is decorated along the top edge, most of these small blades were plain, a decorated one is quite an unusual thing to find, both sides of the top edge are decorated with a series of half-moon shaped stampings. i don't know if the half-moon has a significance but it is clearly what the design represents. it has a single rivet in the tang ... morewhere it would have been fixed to a wooden handle. these were utility knives carried by everyone, male and female in the viking age. this would have been a higher quality seax than most when it was made so in all probability belonged to someone of high rank within the viking community.
