A rare. Heavy Viking Iron helmet, dating to the 8th- 10th Century A.D. The hemispherical dome reinforced with two iron sections. Further reinforced at the top and brim by two thick iron bands, riveted into place numerous times. This piece appears to have been restored in ancient times, the outside of the helmet being reinforced with sheets of iron and riveted in place along the bands and dome. All covered with an ancient patina, suggesting that the helmet was reused in ancient times. Losses are visible both on the interior and exterior of the helmet, with associated patch-repairs. This type of helmet. In use from the Migration period onwards, is often referred to as a"Bandhelm" on account of the two thick bands that support the dome and brim. This piece is heavy and made of solid bronze; it is in the shape of a helmet, with a deeply etched engraving that is a white color; this appears to be white enamel paint that is etched into the bronze itself. I am selling this piece from my own personal collection as I am moving towards collecting more Byzantine. Crusader, and Knight's Templar antiquities; not that I still do not treasure the piece because I do. But this ring would be the premier, or key piece of a Viking artifact collection. The ring measures 23.5mm on the inside diameter. Indicating it belonged to a very large warrior; in fact there are small holes on the top of the helmet! Viking Iron Bremmen-style helmet 8th-9th century AD A substantial iron helmet formed with a vertical band to the brow. With two flat bands across the skull and triangular plates behind; the bands with domed rivets in pairs across the skull, single around the brim, several additional rivets and rivet-holes to the rim for attachment of liner and cheek-plates; the band slightly ovoid in plan; the rim of the brow-band rolled. Weighting: 820 grams. 22cm. Fair condition, small puncture above rim. From an old European collection. Very similar helmets are found in Bremen(Germany) and Groningen(Netherlands) but lacks the prominent rivets usual for this type. Extremely rare! Selling out some of a very large viking collection. Authentic Antique, Medieval 10th-12th century, European Norman Knight conical Helmet, extremely well hand forged entirely of one piece of thick solid steel with a perfectly smooth exterior surface. Most of the helmets of this period were hammered from iron, only the finest ones were made of steel. This particular helmet is made of high-carbon steel, as indicated by the weight, since high-carbon steel is heavier than iron. The steel of the helmet vibrates from gently taping by fingernail, on broken parts, which, in tests are making sound. The way the skull is damaged with sharp cracks is characteristic for steel, since iron is much more malleable than steel, which confirms the steel characteristic of the helmet. On the base edges of the helmet are visible rivets ... moreto attach the hanging cheek and neck pieces. The Norman helmets were made in three types: 1) Helmets forged entirely of one piece of steel with integral nasal. 2) Helmets forged entirely of one piece of steel without nasal. 3) Helmets constructed from several plates riveted together.
