Tea in early 18 Century was expensive and was drunk in the famous pleasure gardens in London and the very Wealthy of the Colonies. Early tea caddies were small and made in precious materials. All caddies carried locks on them and it was typical in the 18 th century for the lady of the house to keep the caddy key on her chatelaine around her waist. This meant the servant and butler of the house would not be tempted to try such a precious commodity. Tea caddies by 1780 began to be made in walnut. Mahogany and were often Satinwood cross banded. They began to become larger from 1784 when the hated tea tax was removed. An emergent middle class could start to take tea for the first time as the average price of tea dropped by three shilling a pound. There is a chip at the bottom of one of lamp which shows the ceramic and a chip at the bottom of the other lamp which shows metal. These lamps were rewired. The bottom is not solid it is a cloth material. These are old. There are three flying bird vintage scenes. Lamps are 26 inches tall from lamp shades.

I purchased this antique toleware bin/tea caddy in New York State. About thirty years ago. I am not sure of its exact age, but I would feel confident in saying it is at least 19th century, judging by the painting style. It is likely to be older. The body of the piece is in excellent condition, with no visible dents or breaks. As expected with very old toleware, there are signs of use/wear that I have tried to capture in the above photos. The piece measures 7 inches in width, 7.25 inches in height(at highest point) and 7.33 inches front to back. The floral and geometric decoration is definitely hand painted, as you can feel the paint texture when you run your fingers over it. This item will ship domestically, at no charge to the buyer. This box was probably made in the mid 20th century in the style of a much older tea caddy. The black exterior has been purposely given an alligatored surface to imitate age, the metallic gold and dark brown painting is not a transfer, it is hand painted. There is a little surface rust inside the box and there is paint wear to the exterior primarily on the edges of the box and lid. I think it would look lovely on a bookshelf, table or mantel- a nice place to hide a remote or two. mid 1800's hand painted tin tea caddy
Nicely hand painted tea caddy in pretty good condition-some paint loss as shown in the pictures. The caddy is about 8 inches tall with a diameter of 4 1/4 inches. No holes or repairs on the main body but the lid has a split on the seam which may indicate that it is not original even though the age is correct. VINTAGE TEA CADDY TIN w OLD TOLE PAINTING 19th CENTURY ?? please read - antique
I am quite familiar with antiques and recognize something old but I can't claim to be an expert on tinware. For that reason I am unsure of the age of this beautiful Tea Caddy. I have included 12 photos and will do the best I can to describe the tin and you can decide or feel free to ask questions. Which I will be happy to answer. The tea caddy is 6 7/8" tall and 5' in diameter at the bottom. Please note in the last photo a shallow dent on the right side, halfway between where the painting ends and the side seam. The interior is"galvanized" I think there might be a more appropriate term- but I think galvanized will do. All the paint is faint. The sides appear to have been painted all over with a pale green very similar to olive drab. There are gold bands of approx. 3/8" at the top and bottom. In fact, the gold and ... moreperhaps the black, seem to be the only colors in the design that have held up. Apparently, one of the original colors was acidic enough that it etched into the metal precisely enough that the pattern it was applied to is still visible- now as etching rather than paint. The entire painted area is VERY faint but the word"TEA" can be made out in the center along with a few gold flowers and some geometric patterns. The etched areas are mostly leaves/vines. This leads me to believe the color that did the etching was green. The lid fits snugly but removes easily as it should and all the seems are tight. I have no doubt one could fill this with water and it would never leak. It appears there might have been paint- and perhaps a pattern- on the lid at one time but little remains. This is not a"bright" piece. I believe the first photo is a fair representation of how it would appear sitting on a shelf. It is as-found. I have done nothing to it. I've done the best I can. Small tea caddy in good condition except the top of the lid is separated from the side near the seam-still not loose.The caddy stands almost 4 inches tall and is 3 3/8 inches wide. Antique Tole Tea Caddy ~ 1800's ~ Three Compartments ~
There are no markings on this caddy that I can see. Maybe under the paint. This caddy is made from a heavy gauge tin. It has no dents. Splits or cracks. The main body of the caddy has 2 compartments, originally for black and green teas. This was a poor man's caddy as it is made of tin. The third compartment is a small one inside the lid of a larger one. It measures about 6 1/2" high and is about 2 1/2" square. I don't know if this is the original paint, I would guess not, but it has been like this for quite some time. Thank you for looking.

this auction is for a beautifully tole painted tea tin. its background is a brown brick color with a fabulous painting on the front in gold of a bird. CONDITION: The surface shows age and wear with surface rust and minor dings. On the underside are a bunch of tiny bents but don't pierce the metal. RARE 1700s Colonial Tin Tea Caddy, Handmade, New England, Asian Motif, Toleware
This wonderful old tea caddy that has an unique Asian motif. It is handmade. And is one-of-a-kind with embossed relief. It's from the 1700s, and has been in my family for many generations. Other than that, I don't know much of its provenance, but I believe it to be from the New England area. Take it with a grain of salt but my Grandmother used to tell the family that it was around during the"Boston Tea Party" and according to her family's word of mouth this tea caddy would have held some of the tea that was thrown overboard. That is if it wasn't tossed and l ost during that revolt and if it had been sold with the British taxes. Then it would have held some tea that would be meaningless without the revolt. So I've always doubted her story but I never knew her to lie but perhaps someone in the family lied to her ... moreas it's a silly story. Either way it's a beautiful, ornate tea caddy even if it didn't hold any'special patriotic tea' but that was her story she would tell us and even if it can't be proven. It does dates from that time period and you are welcome to quote my Grandmother, as it does make it seem'special' but I know you'll love this little gem no matter what! There is some very minor wear and tear from natural aging of such an old item. And there are no major dents or dings. The top removes freely and easily. I have been unable to find any seals, stamps or maker's marks of any sort, though I have looked closely for these. The tin caddy stands about 7 3/4" tall and about 4" in diameter. Also, as you will see in the photographs, it was very carefully and skillfully made. It has many unique figures on the can, from wildlife to people and objects. You can stare at it for a long time. Up for auction is an antique 19th Centiry tin toleware hand painted covered tea caddy recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia. PA area. It is found in good used condition. The interior is quite clean and ready for use. This primitive caddy has very nice patina and its original dry finish. Primary color is black with red pinstripes on top and at the base. There is losses to the original paint exposing rust throughout, normal from use. The top removes freely and easily.
