Mid Century Folk Art on Antique flat sad iron- not the usual painting on an antique flat/ sad iron In the 1950’s to early 1960’s one of the chic decorating trends was to take the clothing irons from many decades before and decorate them with tole painting– These were unique/ one of a kind Folk Art pieces– The artwork is a large tree during autumn/ fall– multicolored leaves and a child’s swing in the tree. These antique pieces were then used Mid Century as either Doorstops or possibly Book Ends- I wish I could find the original manufacturer marking on this piece. But with the painting, I have been unable to see it. Due to age, I assume this is a US piece- It is old. However. This is a special antique iron– larger than most, and extremely heavy– It weighs 7 pounds. Also. Decorative cross hatch pattern on handle and on base sides. Size: large– ... moreweighs 7 pounds. Women(and male tailors) used sad irons, also called tailor's flat irons, to press their families' or customers' clothes, sheets, and fabrics. Sad irons. Also called flat irons or smoothing irons, are shaped pieces of metal(usually cast iron) that are flat and polished on one side and have a handle attached to the other, created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. Sad irons were heated near an open fire or on the stove and their handles became red hot. Sad” is an Old English word for“solid” and the term“sad iron” is means the largest and heaviest of flat irons. Usually 5 to 9 pounds. This sad iron and weighs about 6 pounds.
