Set of 2 vintage antique irons. One is a cast iron base with a non-removeable metal handle with an I x L with a 7 underneath. At least that is what I ... morethink it says from what I can make out) 6 inches long. 3 1/2" wide, and a little over an 1 1/4" tall. Total height with curved handle is approx. 4 3/4" Second iron is a long skinny iron with a removable wood/metal handle. Is says Sensible No. 5 under the handle. This iron is 8 1/4" long and 2 1/2" wide. And 1" tall. Total height with the handle is 4" I have had these as display in my laundry room and we are going to be moving so I am clearing out the house! These are both cast iron/metal so they are very heavy. I have seen these used as doorstops or bookends. All items come from a smoke free home. I ship within 2 days of receiving payment. The design is a"Bunch of Green Grapes" hanging on a Vine with the outside edge of the bottom outlined with a Light Green Border. The handle has"Fish Bone" design. This Unique Sad Iron has very light surface rust and the"Hand Painted" design is still in Fair to Good condition. Here is a Vintage Sad Iron that is Toleware decorated with a boquete of flowers. The paint is in excellent condition. Mid Century Folk Art on Antique flat sad iron- not the usual painting on an antique flat/ sad iron In the 1950’s to early 1960’s one of the chic decorating trends was to take the clothing irons from many decades before and decorate them with tole painting– These were unique/ one of a kind Folk Art pieces– The artwork is a large tree during autumn/ fall– multicolored leaves and a child’s swing in the tree. These antique pieces were then used Mid Century as either Doorstops or possibly Book Ends- I wish I could find the original manufacturer marking on this piece. But with the painting, I have been unable to see it. Due to age, I assume this is a US piece- It is old. However. This is a special antique iron– larger than most, and extremely heavy– It weighs 7 pounds. Also. Decorative cross hatch pattern on handle and on base sides. Size: large– ... moreweighs 7 pounds. Height when standing up is approx 6 3/4ths inches. Width is approx 3 7/8ths inches. Height from the base to the handle top is approx 5 inches. Condition: Very good. No rust. Women(and male tailors) used sad irons, also called tailor's flat irons, to press their families' or customers' clothes, sheets, and fabrics. Sad irons. Also called flat irons or smoothing irons, are shaped pieces of metal(usually cast iron) that are flat and polished on one side and have a handle attached to the other, created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. Sad irons were heated near an open fire or on the stove and their handles became red hot. Sad” is an Old English word for“solid” and the term“sad iron” is means the largest and heaviest of flat irons. Usually 5 to 9 pounds. This sad iron and weighs about 6 pounds. The iron is made by B& Co. Circa 1910, with the company named marked ... moreon top of the iron. It is a No. 6 style/size iron. The original cast iron has primitive"tole painting" by an unknown folk artist. It includes yellow on the handle, and bright red flowers around the iron's edge.
