Small Primitive Vintage Hand Painted Toleware Tin Box Hinged Lid Spice Box or? I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and shop with another ebayer seller from out of town recently- a real catfish moment. Because we’ve talked for years, but never met! No surprises, just all fun and did we shop until we dropped! I have lots of very cool items for you that I will be listing all week. Enjoy! This old box is somewhat of a mystery to me. It's made from a metal that a magnet stick to- and it's light and definitely has the feel and weigh of tin. But if you look closely at the inside, it has a patination that looks very much like the pattern on galvanized steel(but this doesn't have the weight of steel) Look at my inside photos and see what you think- it's a first for me. The other thing that would support whether it's galvanized ... moreis that, although the metal shows darkness form age, it does not have rust- there's rust colored spots, but I do think that is from the paint. Whatever it's made of, it's held up very very well.this one is a charmer. Measuring 3" square and 2 1/2" tall, it is the size of the spice boxes that I have seen, but there's no name etc. on it. It weighs a smidge under 1/4 lb. It has a lovely hand painted finish- the background of the body is gold, and the top and bottom are black, and they are accented with flowers on all 4 sides in shades of rust, green, burgundy and grey. The top of the lid, and the sides of the lid have thin line hand painted borders too. The hinged lid works perfectly, and the lid fits well, and stays securely in place. It really is in excellent solid and sturdy condition overall- I can't find a ding. There is wear to the finish all over in small scratches and scrapes- it's easier to see at the solid black on top. There's also some palpable small white spots on all 4 sides- see photo 4 for a good example- those aren't paint chips, those are something on TOP of the paint- it feels like paper to me- as if this was wrapped i

It is also is about 1 1/8” deep. The handles left and right are circular rolled under. Please refer to the scan of the underside for reference. The stenciled design in cream. Green and red paint on both left and right sides is beautiful and carries over along the top and bottom sides. There appears to be an under wash of a copper color that shows through the paint in various areas and quite a lot on the reverse side. The piece of older tape on the reverse mentions the fact that at one time the piece had four balled feet, one at each corner. These however are no longer present. The character of the tray does not suffer with them missing. ... moreThe seams of the tin are tight with the exception of one ¾”slight split in the tin seam running from the base of the tray diagonally to the top corner. It would have held family documents and other valuables. This box measures approximately 7 3/4" x 4 3/8" x 4 1/2" It is 1 1/2" taller with the handle fully extended. A nice primitive box. Antique Primitive Tin Toleware Box: Hand Painted, Black, Gold, Early 1900s
This little tin box is about recipe box size at 5-3/4" X 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" deep. It was acquired at an estate sale where all of the items being sold were from the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is hand painted and I believe the tole design is actually stenciled on with gold paint with red shading. The top. As shown in the photo, is a cluster of three cherries; the front and back panels have a swag with a little red flower in the middle; and the end panels have a daisy-like flower. The black paint job is not first rate: there are a few areas where the original drips and brush strokes can be seen and it has now become crazed. This is part of what makes this piece so very charming. The stenciling is mostly intact except for an area of paint loss on the largest cherry. Overall I would consider the box to be in nice condition given ... moreits probable 100+ year age. There are a number of small dents and dings. Nothing of real significance. The lid fits on and off as it should with a small amount of effort. There are a few small areas of paint loss, primarily around the edge where the lid has rubbed; there is one small"blob" of white paint right beneath where the top of the lid ends; and there is some surface rust on the interior including one pin-hole size area where light shows through. This is an estate piece being sold as is. As found. I cannot guarantee that it has not been exposed to odors: smoking, fragrance, cooking, mustiness, mothballs, other storage odors or pets. Up for auction is an antique Fries& Co tin toleware spice box recently found at auction in the Lancaster County. PA area. It is found in good used condition, but is missing one of the interior individual spice boxes, as seen best in photo#2. The exterior is grain painted in a yellow and yellow color, but quite dirty. This entire piece could benefit from a good cleaning. There are several scratches on this box, with losses to the paint on all sides. The bottom of the tin is unpainted. It has a hasp on the side. In the day, spices were valuable and locked when not being used. The top of the box has a swing handle so it can be easily carried where needed. Up for consideration is a fine pair of original black painted Tole Candle Sconces. These date mid 19th Century or earlier. They are unmarked but more than likely come from the Eastern United States Pennsylvania. They measure 10 inches by 3 3/4 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches deep. They have nice pie crust crimping along the top arched portion of the Wall Sconces. They have wonderful coloration and more or less are in exceptional condition with no visible repairs. The milk pail has wonderful crazing as you can see in the photo's(sorry for the glares) Some paint loss and lots of dings and dents. If you collect early pieces of toleware you will like this piece. The back is curved and from front to back is 1 3/8” This was not a toy. But just a small ... morelantern which would hold a 3/8” diameter candle. You can see that it is in original unrestored condition. It retains its original black painted surface, but there is rust at the top where the tin was heated by the candle. The only problem with this 19 th century Tin Lantern is the missing 3” by 3 ½” thin glass front which would slide into place. Because of its very small size this lantern would make a wonderful accessory for a doll. It would look in proportion for a doll that measures 22 to 26 inches. Whether you are a collector of early lighting or you have a a primitive doll. You’ll be glad to know there is no reserve. ANTIQUE TIN TOLE TRAY OAK LEAVES ACORNS VTG PRIMITIVE BLACK COPPER PAINT COUNTRY
This is a wonderful STURDY HAND PAINTED TIN TOLE BLACK AND COPPER SERVING TRAY WITH LOVELY STENCILED OAK LEAVES AND ACORNS. The tray measures 17 3/4" x 12" x 1" Tin Tray is heavy gauge of definitely antique type. And has been repainted years ago in 1950's with appropriate copper powder style stencil design-design is now over a half century old on an older tray! The lady who consigned this tray said that her mother painted tin ware for other people. I do not know if she was a professional. But the painting is exquisite. The stencil work is done Hitchcock style with a stencil and then enhanced with hand painted areas. Oak leaves line the outer edges with the most wonderful abundance of acorns around a center rectangle. This artistry is synonymous with circa 1830-40's Sheraton American decoration seen on fancy chairs. ... moreCandle snuffer trays, and tea caddies so famous in that era. The newly growing"modern improvement" society all over typically New England states and homes craved this motif. Regency was out the door, and stencil lacquer was"in" as the newest fad. Those early trays which saw hard use and became worn were often candidates for repainting years later in period style, such as this one. The condition of the tray is quite good. The front is in very good condition but there are a few chips on the back. It appears that there has been some overpainting on the back, also. A really lovely tray. Email me with any questions.

The interior is quite clean and ready for use. This primitive caddy has very nice patina and its original dry finish. Primary color is black with red pinstripes on top and at the base. There is losses to the original paint exposing rust throughout, normal from use. The top removes freely and easily. This caddy measures approximately 6 1/2" tall with a base diameter approximately 3" and an opening diameyer of approximately 1 3/8" in size. But quite used, dusty losses to paint, bent edges and normal losses from over 150 years of use. There are rust spots on the reverse side. Antique Toleware Tin Sander Primitive
This is a very grungy sander. It has been used alot which has taken most of the black finish off. The numbers printed on the bottom might signify it was inventoried for a collection or museum. Up for auction is this vintage stenciled tin with a cover. The small tin measures 5 ¼” in diameter and 3” deep. Flowers have been stenciled in gold paint on the cover and side of the tin.
