Fresh out of an estate in Philadelphia comes an Original Late 1700's or early 1800's Colonial Hand Forged(not one part of this tray has been machined) Tole Ware Tray with Hand Painted Stencil work(with checking and Crazing one would expect from a painting of this age) You can actually see the hammer marks as well as the plier marks to the hand cut binding pieces. This is truly a conversation piece. This is a large tray(much larger than the reproductions of the late 1800's) It measures 26 in wide and 19 in. tall. Bill McGraw Handmade Tole Marbleized Painted Stencil Star Toleware Metal Globe Ornament. The very large somewhat Chess piece rook shaped ornament with a large ball at top with gold background and blue star/ snowflake stencils. The base with light brown marbled lower section and with green marbled reel shaped stem. The underside marked Made By/ Bill McGraw/ All By Hand in green and Bill McGraw in red. The sphere appears to be made with metal circles and strips soldered together. Where ball and base are attached seems to be a repair with a different gold paint. A very nice folk art style painted tole tray w/ a stenciled fruit basket. The painting reminds me of the stenciling found on Hitchcock Rocking chairs from the 19th century and maybe a Pennsylvania Dutch style artwork. Age is hard to determine on the piece. But the"alligatoring" of the paint makes me think that it is probably from the late 19th century. The metal is also relatively light and I cannot find any marks. It measures about 16 1'2" across and about 13" wide. Condition is pretty nice. As stated, there is some alligatoring of the paint, specially around the inside rim edges which should show in the photos. There is some minor denting around the edges and there are spots where something hot was placed on the tray and burned the paint leaving a mark. To me, all of these"faults" add to the patina of the ... morepiece, but stated as I see it. This is a beautiful antique tole bowl. It is stenciled and hand painted. It is black with gold stenciling and hand painted colorful flowers. I think the border is pineapples going horizontally. Antique 19th C Hand Painted Tin Tole Toleware Tray Stencil Freehand Primitive
Up for auction is an antique 19th C tin toleware tole tray recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It is found in good used condition. But quite used, dusty losses to paint, bent edges and normal losses from over 150 years of use. There are rust spots on the reverse side. This tray approximately measures 8 1/4 x 11 3/4" Despite these losses, this is still a quite nice antique toleware tray. It is both hand stenciled and freehand painted. Very nice piece of toleware.
