This hand-painted Batea Tray measures 12-1/2" across. I have to apologize as originally. My description said that the bowl had no cracks. However, upon closer inspection. I noticed it did have a small crack, which is located on the upper right(first photo) where the daisy is painted. So. I changed that in the"condition" description but had forgotten to change it here. Okay. Now the crack has been mentioned. You might not see it. I didn't at first. The bowl does appear to have been used and has typical wear marks from use. It is still charming though and can still be used as a tray or bowl. Or simply for display. Floral design features mostly roses and pink daisies. Up for auction here is a set of 5 completely different vintage Mexican Batea bowls. Batea are hand adzed. Or roughly hewn, shallow wood bowls that are painted by hand in with a black background on the front(usually) and then decorated with colorful flowers. This is a type of folk art from Mexico that resembles hex paintings by the Pennsylvania Dutch and French toleware or tole art. They are in graduated sizes. This is a beautiful MEXICAN WOOD TOLE PAINTED FOLK ART 9" DISH OR BOWL. It is brightly painted in orange. Blue, white, reds and green. There is a little paint loss but still a gorgeous vintage dish or bowl. There is a tiny nail hole in the top of the yellow flower and looks as if someone had a ribbon on the back to hang this beauty on the wall. It has a very shiny finish. Antigue Mexican BATEA Wood RARE Very Large 20" Tray/Platter Folk Art Wedding?
RARE Estate find. Antique Mexican Batea wood Folk art. Rare, very large 20" Platter/Tray. Beautiful hand etched and painted culture wedding scene, possibly Mayan depictions of faces, birds and animals, Mexican zodiac? Very intricate and beautiful work by someone. The lacquer is mostly intact with some chipping around the edge. There are lines/cracks that are minimally visible under the lacquer, not sure if this is natural or from age. There is an old leather hanger on back. The name Mexico is etched on back and there is an old original price tag with $300 still attached. I have no idea what the age of this piece could be.
