Photos taken outside in cloudy afternoon light. Looks fabulous! A bit of wear. A few spots, and some of the blue wool rags shows small holes(2nd last photo) No repairs. There are loose black threads throughout, used to sew the rags into strips for weaving. There are less on the side that seems to have been up; likely the threads came off through use. But the rug shows little use- looks wonderful! This rug came out of a VERY dusty old attic, and really needs cleaning. That attic held many other long-forgotten antique hooked and rag rugs. This is our listing containing an Early Antique Tin Tole Decorated Centerpiece- East Coast Find; very unusual form- Seems to have a sand weighted base with three wall pocket forms on the front and a trio of bud vases on the back. Also a handle at the top for either carrying or hanging- Black paint with gold trim. PR. of 19TH CENTURY GREEN PAINTED TIN TOLE DECORATED ARGAND LAMP type SCONCES
This is a wonderful and scarce Pair of 19th Century Green Painted Tin Tole Decorated Argand Lamp type Sconces. They each measure approximately 9-3/4" tall. The construction of cut and rolled edges and form matches on both examples. The hand decoration shows similar characteristics. But with subtle differences, leading us to believe they were decorated by different people in the workshop. Both show a ge appropriate wear and losses to the paint decoration. Only one retains the removable fuel tank inside the housing. The other retains only the top visible portion of the fuel tank. There are minor dents. Wear and losses as shown in the photos. The only visible markings are hand written'No 294' on the back of each. We lean towards an American origin attribution. But we leave that final determination to the buyer. The form is not often ... moreseen. Let alone with original decoration, they would certainly be a wonderful addition to any early lighting collection or to accessorize a 19th century country or primitive setting. Stunning pair of 19th century authentic primitive toleware biscuit tins 10.5″ tall with a hand-painted florals and fruits in a basket painted in tones of red and gold paint or gold leaf(i.e. japanning) on a black enameled background. The pair have hammered hinged lids with round knobs that bolt onto them. Japanning is the European technique of lacquering metalware to imitate traditional Japanese style which was regarded as a beautiful and high art form. There are a few small places where the black enamel lacquer has chipped away. Measuring about 10 ¼” by 4” by 5/8” the paint on this is“strange” in that parts appear to have been repainted or then again. Maybe not after all. The back’s black paint is so“good” it has to be a repaint. The red with its gold pin striping, however, is uneven. The sides appear to be original in their subtle colors of copper, black, gold over red. An attractive piece, structurally sound, but even with paint problems it is still a lovely piece. A very large American 19th-century octagonal tole tray with cut in handles and canted corners. It is stencilled and handpainted with a Federal or Sheraton gold tazza design on black ground. With alternate panels with a swag design in gold, and a border of handpainted leaves. It has its original surface and has not been touched up. Measures 30" in length. 22 1/2" in width, and 2" in depth. Heavy weight and good period construction including rolled seams. The weight of the tray is almost 7 lbs. It is in fair to good condition. The surface finish of the tray is 99% intact and untouched. The cut out handles and rim are rolled. See The Ornamented Tray Reference Book, by Zilla Rider Lea, Page 188, Figure#54 for similar tray. These exquisitely modeled Walnut candlesticks are unusual in that they have been painted. In the tole manner, on the bottom plate, and on a band around the shoulder of the shaft. They appear to be of walnut, with a dark finish, which has darkened from age to almost black in places. They have pieces of gold baize or felt on the bottom, in the usual manner of this age. The long urn-shaped shaft and decorative turnings are extremely fine. Signs of age and wear. As to be expected- a few chips to the finish, wear and wax dripping, alligatoring to finish. 14" H, largest foot measurement 7 1/2" 1" opening for candle(tapers internally) and total top diameter 1 3/4" I imagine these on a Pre-Civil War sideboard. VINTAGE TEA CADDY TIN w OLD TOLE PAINTING 19th CENTURY ?? please read - antique
I am quite familiar with antiques and recognize something old but I can't claim to be an expert on tinware. For that reason I am unsure of the age of this beautiful Tea Caddy. I have included 12 photos and will do the best I can to describe the tin and you can decide or feel free to ask questions. Which I will be happy to answer. The tea caddy is 6 7/8" tall and 5' in diameter at the bottom. Please note in the last photo a shallow dent on the right side, halfway between where the painting ends and the side seam. The interior is"galvanized" I think there might be a more appropriate term- but I think galvanized will do. All the paint is faint. The sides appear to have been painted all over with a pale green very similar to olive drab. There are gold bands of approx. 3/8" at the top and bottom. In fact, the gold and ... moreperhaps the black, seem to be the only colors in the design that have held up. Apparently, one of the original colors was acidic enough that it etched into the metal precisely enough that the pattern it was applied to is still visible- now as etching rather than paint. The entire painted area is VERY faint but the word"TEA" can be made out in the center along with a few gold flowers and some geometric patterns. The etched areas are mostly leaves/vines. This leads me to believe the color that did the etching was green. The lid fits snugly but removes easily as it should and all the seems are tight. I have no doubt one could fill this with water and it would never leak. It appears there might have been paint- and perhaps a pattern- on the lid at one time but little remains. This is not a"bright" piece. I believe the first photo is a fair representation of how it would appear sitting on a shelf. It is as-found. I have done nothing to it. I've done the best I can. Antique 19th century earlier tole Mirror wall Sconces Distressed & Fashionable
The sconces measure about 13 inches tall by 5 1/2 inches wide. They are heavily oxidized and the mirrors are completely distressed. One sconce is weak where it meets the drip pan edge that runs vertical in a semicircular form. The bobeche or candle holder tabs go through the bottom and are soldered in place. Beautiful 19th century toleware deed box in rare oval shape. Original wire loop and front locking hasp. This black toleware deed box with early mustard and red paint decoration is all 100% original and untouched! This box was purchased at a Vermont antique store four years ago. It is a Maine piece of toleware done by the very famous"Stevens" family of Maine; well listed Toleware painters and tinsmiths in Maine-very well documented in the folk art and toleware books. This box is not from Pennsylvania, but is a Maine toleware piece-very rare and even harder to come by! The paint is still intact but has faded as the photos will show. Original Antique 19th-Century Brass Bed Warmer Pan Really neat collector's item Measurements: 109.1 x 13cm_ 43 x 51 inches Hanging a warming pan near the hearth is not just a decorator's idea. The fireplace was always a sensible place for it. So it could easily be filled with glowing coals or wood embers before being taken away to warm the bed. Using a hot stone or brick heated at the fireside is one way of carrying warmth from the hearth into bed. By the 16th century people were also taking pans filled with smouldering fuel from the fire itself. The well-known brass or copper warming pan on a handle was not the only way of doing this. There were also wooden frames designed to hold pots of fuel inside the bedclothes. See lower down the page) A warming pan. Sometimes known as a bed warmer nowadays, was a valuable family possession ... morehanded down from generation to generation, but not so expensive that it was only for the rich. If you were very wealthy you might have a silver one, or a warmer. Some of the most ornate warming pans have an elaborate pattern of perforations incorporated in the design. But not all warming pans had. This difference would have been crucial for the servant or housewife using the pan. With air holes. The embers would keep smouldering, the heat would last longer, but the bed would probably smell of fumes and there was an increased risk of scorching the sheets. The smell was not always of wood or coal; in some parts of the UK it was burning peat. In 19th-century England fully enclosed warming pans seem to have been popular: cleaner perhaps. But the heat would have died down more quickly. Some warming-pans with solid lids were used with hot water. Others were completely open like this from the French Alps.
