1781 Vaugondy Map- Mappe Monde The Vaugondy family produced a large number of atlases from about 1740 to the end of the century. Apart from the large'Atlas Universelle' and the small'Atlas Militaire' They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers, none more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from about 1751 until well into the 1800's. This double hemisphere map of the World is from the issue of 1781. The map has a very interesting geography- the North American Arctic is unknown with Greenland attached to the continent and the West coast is unmapped. Eastern Australia and New Zealand are mostly unknown. Japan is very distorted with the partially mapped island of Jesso. The ... moresouthern continent is not shown except for the recent discovery of Cape Circoncision. In North America the map names N. Angleterre. Louisiana, N. Mexique, Californie, Canada, Labrador, Terre Neuve. North America appears with a fair approximation of accuracy though the western and northwestern regions remain either blank or speculative. Alaska is entirely absent. But the Aleutian archipelago does appear in an embryonic form according to earlier Russian explorations. By contrast the northeast parts of Asia, which had recently been explored by Vitus Bering and Tschirikow, are depicted with a fair approximation of accuracy. Both the apocryphal Terre de Gama and Terre de la Company ... moreappear just northeast of Yedso(Hokkaido) Often called de Gamma Land or Gama, these islands were supposedly discovered in the 17th century by a mysterious figure known as Jean de Gama. Here for sale is a vintage map published by W& A K Johnston in 1914 as part of the Popular Edition Series. It came with several similar maps from the"Unrivaled Series" of 1914 published by Johnston. I obtained this map and 6 other maps from a collection of maps used in a one room school in Welch. Minnesota. The maps had a slight odor of age which has improved substantially since I took them out of their holder. The map measures about 38 by 48 inches. And has rollers on each end. The map has condition issues as shown in the photo. Including tearing and scraping, mostly along the bottom, and along the extreme edges. There are some small tears in the map too. Map has some staining or darkening, again mostly along the bottom, and could use a cleaning. Please see the photos to observe condition. Up for auction is an old antique map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Asia. Europe, Africa, and Australia. Below the map it says, Published by Samuel Walker, Boston. I am not exactly sure what year this map was printed, but I believe this map is from the mid 1800's. The overall condition is fair with good color, but there are some yellowish brown spots that you can see in the pictures. The spots are probably from age, but perhaps it took on some moisture at some point over the years. The paper though is great with a nice cream color and no tears, creases, or other defects to mention. The size of the entire paper is 10.5" x 8.5" and the diameter of the map is 7.25" This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. California is shown as an island. And Acoma and Santa Fe are noted in the Southwest, with Acoma shown correctly atop a mesa. The coastline of Asia is shown with the discoveries of the De Vries noted, including Terre de Iesso or Ieco. And a land called Yupi. The Great Lakes are not updated from the 1651 version. And do not show all five lakes. The map is typical of Sanson's"scientific" style of cartography with no decorative elements. 17th C (?) double hemisphere world map, hand colored
Offered here without reserve is this hand colored map that appears to date to the 17th century. I am. However, no expert on maps and am willing to be told it is a restrike of a later date(though I am certain it cannot be earlier than mid 19th century. I should note that the paper is not as white as it appears in my pictures. Seems my camera has bleached things out a bit) To assist in forming a judgment, my last picture shows the backside of the map held up to the sun so that you can see that watermarking to the paper. Its all hand colored. no contemporary lithography or photo offset here. and measures 21 1/2" x 17 1/4" map image measures 18" x 13" Although all on a single sheet of paper, there is a very clean, sharp crease running down the center to suggest this was originally in a book. Beyond that I'll have to let ... moremy pictures tell the whole story. As for apologies, there are essentially none except for a water stain at the bottom margin. Created& printed in the 1920s by the Historical Map Society. New York. Designed& drawn by famed illustrator James Henry Daugherty. Included in the prolific illustrations are: scenes of world history from cave men.
