This is a fair quality(its grainy from Tri-X black and white film and not as sharp as this small photo) historic hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative. Archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford'Pearl' semi-matte surface black& white photographic paper, cropped and mounted on a black 8x10 inch backing board(see photo) from an original negative with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Sunset Beach, north Oahu,©1968. It is initialed(BR' and dated on the front of the photo by the photographer, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage. It has preservation tips included in the label on the back. Please be aware that this photo is unlike ... morenewer computer digital prints because the original was shot on older grainy black and white film and printed from a negative and when enlarged will look grainier and not quite as sharp as the large thumbnail in this listing. It has the unique look of a silver halide gelatin photo. And is still a very nice historic print. It would make a great gift for someone who likes surfing or historic ocean images of Hawaii. Aikau. Was born in 1946. On this day he was the only one out for several hours. Eddie, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Waimea, Haleiwa, Laniakea, Makaha, Sunset Beach and Chunn's Reef. He was lost at sea in 1978 during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of th photographer. Ironically, it was the late big wave rider Mark Foo who coined the term"Eddie Would Go" referring to the fact that Eddie would always go for the big

WAIMEA BAY 1969: BIGGEST WINTER EVER 40' WAVE PHOTO v
This is a fair quality original(though a little grainy as it was shot on Tri-X film) hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative. Archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford'Pearl' semi-matte surface black& white photographic paper and mounted on a black 8x10 inch backing board of a 40 foot+(old style) close out wave at Waimea Bay 1969. It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage. No one was out. If you're familiar with Waimea, you'll notice the'boil' and realize how big this wave really was, and this was only a smaller one of the biggest sets that day that were consistently closing out across the entire bay! There were many days of ... moresurf this size over a two month period. It has preservation tips and photography information included in the label on the back. It would make a great gift for someone who likes this area or historic ocean images of Hawaii. The surf during the 1969 winter season was undoubtedly the largest ever seen on the north shore. Waimea Bay broke at least 20-30 times and there were periods of 30-40 foot(old Hawaiian surf height) surf that lasted for weeks that would be called 50-60+ feet by modern weather bureau standards today. It was incredible. There were some days that you could stand on shore and single swells came in that blocked the horizon as far as you could see. The waves were so big that they were'stacking' building up on each other faster than the water could recede) and washing over Kam highway at many locations. At least 11 lives were lost. Mostly spectators on shore, and there was a lot of property damage. Please note that this was printed from the original grainy negative and has some dust marks and small imperfections that you can't see on this screen. But it still looks OK. Waimea Bay has one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie A

Archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford'Pearl' semi-matte surface black& white photographic paper and mounted on an 8x10 inch backing board(see photo) with caption and photography information on the back of the Haleiwa Theatre, circa 1966. It is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage, and has preservation tips and history included in the label on the back. Haleiwa Theatre was a famous historic Oahu landmark. It was built in 1932 in the'art deco' style and was featured in our twice award winning"Haleiwa: A Pictorial History" book. It was very popular because there was no tv reception available for nearly forty years until cable tv came to the north shore in 1978. There were several other theatres on the north shore. Koga, Waialua, Kahuku) but Haleiwa was one of the most popular. It was one of the first major landmarks anyone coming from Wahiawa to the north shore from Kamehameha Highway would see as they came down the hill. Afterwards, due to poor business and home video tape rentals, it fell into disrepair. It was partially torn down, unannounced, by an unscrupulous developer, at dawn on a Saturday morning in 1984 amid public protest as a historic landmark. By the time a stop order was issued it was irreparable. It is now the site of the Haleiwa McDonalds! In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore. Aikau, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Sunset, Laniakea, Makaha, Waimea, and Chunn's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946 was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of the photographer. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term"Eddie Would Go" which actually refered to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! This is a rare older fair quality(its grainy and low contrast) hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by long time professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative. Archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford'Pearl' semi-matte surface black& white photographic paper and mounted on a black 8x10 inch backing board with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Haleiwa(Alii Beach) North Oahu ©1968. It was published in Surfer Magazine in 1968 and mistakenly captioned as Ben Aipa. It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped(you can see slightly) to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. Who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Sunset, Laniakea, Makaha, Waimea Bay, and Chunn's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946, was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of mine. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who came up the term"Eddie Would Go" which actually refered to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest waves that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days!
