This illustrated survey of all aspects of the Pacific war. From Pearl Harbor to Japan's surrender in Tokyo Bay, offers an extensive colour portfolio of dramatic wartime relics that have survived decades on most of the Pacific island battlefields. Rusting American landing craft and tanks still can be found on the treacherous reefs and beaches where they were tragically stopped by enemy fire so long ago; aircraft of both sides lie hidden in the jungles where they crashed; battle-scarred Japanese pillboxes and artillery emplacements still stand sentinel; and packed-coral landing strips remain as good as new. Such evocative memento mori have been captured on film by Jerry Meehl, probably the only photographer to have sought out these far-flung battle sites, many of them still dangerous underfoot and now off-limits to travellers. The authors ... morealso searched official archives for pictures that show the real terrors of combat and often found images displaying the very tanks and amtracs now decomposing on distant invasion beaches. They also found captured prewar photos of newly built Japanese pillboxes and gun emplacements, which they contrast with images of their current war-torn condition. Solomon Islands wood paddle war club from before the turn of the twentieth century. The carving and quality indicate it was made before or just after the arrival of europeans so I think it was made in the mid to late 1800's. I purchased this club from Tad Dale of the TAD Gallery in Santa Fe. New Mexico in 1998. Deep rich patina with signs of a lot of handling. This is the best balanced club I have ever owned.and I've owned a lot of clubs. In fact, if I had to choose one club for self defense, this would be it. The sides are relatively sharp and the club handles so well. The wood is dense and heavy. At the handle end are the characteristic nose and eyebrow design(possibly frigate bird wings) found in Solomon Islands art and a center ridge on each side. The only damage is a small broken off missing piece of wood along one edge of the ... moretip as can be seen in the last photo on the bottom. Club is 103 cm long or 40 1/2" Fair for you fair for me. It is just under 20" in length and exhibits quality carving as would be found on examples from the 19th century or earlier. Being approximately 70 years old. It does show some age. This lot consists of a very nice 1918-23 North West Pacific Islands Scott#31a in Mint Lightly Hinged condition. This 3d Australian stamp with"N.W. PACIFIC ISLANDS. overprint has deep rich coloring. Four nice margins centered slightly to the bottom right and very nice perforations(all intact) all around. Reverse side of MLH stamp has original gum with light hinge mark as well as a light pencil marking. Overall condition is considered to be Very Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of Polynesia, or Islands in the Pacific, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. Finely engraved, and carefully researched, the maps set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. Pacific Islands. Hand Carved, Warrior Prince& Princess Figurines, Bali(Teak) Wood. These are two beautiful carved figurine busts. The wood appears to be Bali wood. It is very heavy and dense wood with beautiful grain accentuation in the highly polished figurine busts. The figurines measure 9" in height and 5-3/4" in width. The Condition is very good. There has been a professional repair of a broken tip end of the male figurines head dress. It appears as a minor hairline crack when looking directly down at the top of the figurine. see last picture. Also there is a small circular hole in the back quiver of the male figurine that may have been for and arrow or a feather. These are great collectibles and wonderful display items. Both items are included.
