1864 Blunt Sea Chart North Atlantic great plottings 39x51 Whaling? Bangor Maine
Chart Of The North Atlantic Ocean From The Equator to 05 degrees North Latitude. According To The Latest Surveys& Observations.With Additions to 1864. New York: Published by E& GW Blunt, Maiden Lane, NY. 39 x 51 inches. Blue-backed chart. Very scarce(oldmaps.com shows no auction records for this 1864 version going back 25 years of Blunt's Chart. Not in Rumsey either) Came out of an estate in Bangor Maine.inscription in pencil on the map that states"This old chart purchased at Bangor Maine Oct 19. 1854" probably meant 1864) With fantastic multiple plottings crisscrossing the Atlantic east to west and north to south from 1866 through the 1870s- most in pencil, some in faded blue ink. What a journey this map has had. The plottings are so detailed you can see the daily tickmarks on more than 5 Atlantic crossings, with dates. ... moreLooks like it has some whaling info- tickmarks, what looks to be a whale tail, and the word Bluu written in pencil all over the map. Also some of the plottings from north to south suggest whaling, since if this was just a packet ship there would not be zigzag plottings in the middle of the Atlantic at all with no land stops. Fortunately the plottings are very faded so the eye appeal of the map is still very good. Condition is overall good, full margins, some rippling and creasing, minimal toning, one small hole. Was not conserved but could be linen backed and that would take out much of the rippling and flatten it down. All in all an instructive chart with enough plotting info to keep you enthralled for a long while. Plus, this is a very scarce map to boot. Came in a huge frame and if you are from New England we can arrange a pickup so as to keep it in frame- otherwise it will be taken out when shipped.

Antique 19thC Blackies Atlas Circumpolar North Pole/Atlantic Ocean Maps 1880s Description These lovely antique maps come from a World Atlas published around 1880 by Blackie& Co Limited of London. Glasgow and Edinburgh, and is one of a number of similar map pages I'll be offering this week. There are two regions featured here: the top map covers the Circumpolar North Pole region and the lower one the Atlantic Ocean. The colours and fine detail are clear and strong. And the maps are signed at the bottom by Wm Jno Turner FRGS(William John, Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society) The maps are professionally joined at the centre, with perfect matching to the front. The maps are in great condition with some light wear to the edges with no other damage. They measure 56 cm/22" by 39 cm/15.5" And the estimated packaged weight is ... more500 gms.
