Tunison World Atlas~Hand colored Maps of the World~1880s?
Up for bid is a very old. Very tattered, brittle, Tunison's World Atlas. From an Estate, the front and back covers are missing along with the first and last 10 pages, and pages 27-30. It is darkened from age, and after doing some research, I believe this is from the late 1800s-early1900s by H C Tunison, Jacksonville IL. 14 x 11.5 inches, originally had 209 pages. The Atlas features hand-colored maps of the world including maps of the US States and territories, chiefly hand-colored with several appearing in printed color. Can't find a date in the atlas, but there is a page of the Presidents that ends with Benjamin Harrison, elected in 1888. Also, a page showing the official seals of the US States has only 38. For as bad as the condition is, some of the inner pages are still good, and I have seen similar ones listed individually for ... moresale. Rare Antique W.G. Evans Hand-Colored Celestial Map 1856 Constellations
This 157-year-old hand-colored map was engraved by W.G. Evans for Burritt's Atlas for the Geography of the Heavens. Published in 1856. This is plate VII, depicting the constellations of the southern hemisphere. The decorative illustrations of the constellations are wonderful and the orchid pink coloring adds a beautiful touch. Even the overall foxing only adds to the map's appeal. It measures approximately 14&1/4" x 16&1/4" The paper is soft and flexible. So this will ship rolled in a heavy-duty mailing tube. Please note that because it has been stored rolled, I had to place dominoes on the edges to hold it flat to photograph it. As shown, I moved the dominoes so that between the first and second photos of the entire map, you can see the map in its entirety.

This is an early AUTHENTIC hand-colored Western US map of what I believe is present day Yuma and Tuscon Az extending north toward Phoenix Az. The map is entitled" Reconnaissance of the Zuni. Little Colorado, and Colorado Rivers. Made in 1851 under the direction of Col. JJ Abert, Chief of Corps Topographical Engineers by BVT, Capt L. Sitgreaves, T.E. assisted by Lieut JG Parke, TE and Mr. MH Kern, drawn by RH Kern 1852. The size is an impressive 49" wide x 27" high and if matted and framed would be a nice edition or cornerstone conversation piece, especially for someone living in Arizona who appreciates early western history. Does NOT include any frame. The condition of the map is fair to good considering it's around 160 years old. The map is printed on thin paper(NOT the heavy type canvas backed type paper) and is rather ... morefragile. The buyer would want to quickly get this map in a frame to preserve it. In the center, planetary paths from Earth and inner planets to Jupiter and Saturn are shown in a sunburst, all within a concentric ring of Baroque representations of the 12 signs of the zodiac. The trajectory of the planets, a schematic diagram of the eclipse formation, the sun, Urania(the Goddess of Astonomy) and the star gazing diagram of the eclipse formation, the sun, decorative images in the four corners of the chart. French World Atlas c. 1865 Hand Colored Maps Complete Offered here De E. Cortambert's NOUVEL ATLAS DE GEOGRAPHIE CONTENANT EN 84 CARTES. It was published in Paris by Librairie De Hachette c. 1865. With 84 plates. The first thirty(30) plates are maps with historical themes. Followed by three(3) plates on Cosmography. The rest of the atlas has maps of various countries and continents contemporary to c. 1865. Most of the plates consist of one full-page map. All plates have blank versos. And all are hand colored. Bound in dark blue and black marbled paper boards with a dark brown leather spine. The covers are worn and soiled with extensive chipping of the marbled paper. The spine is much rubbed but still strong. The binding is intact with all plates present. The maps are clean and in excellent condition with the exception of plate 1. Which ... morehas some insect damage. The front free end paper. Title page, and table of contents also have insect damage, creasing. And chipping. Half of the table of contents page is missing.
