Joseph Hutchins Colton(July 5. 1800- July 29, 1893) was an important American map and atlas publisher active from 1833 to the early 1890s. He moved to New York in 1831 and befriended the established engraver Samuel Stiles. Colton recognized an emerging market in railroad maps and travel guides and soon started publishing maps and guide books. Between 1833 and 1855 Colton published a large number of guidebooks and railroad maps which proved to be very popular. In the early 1850s Colton brought his two sons, George Woolworth Colton and Charles B. Colton into the map business. G. W. Antique Early 1900's Pull Down Classroom Map of the Eastern Hemisphere
For sale is an incredible antique school wall map of the Eastern Hemisphere that was manufactured in Chicago. Illinois by A.J. Nystrom& Co. This wonderfully aged map is printed on a canvas material and comes with the original metal bracket which still works and is very easy to mount. Due to the fragile nature of the map, it must be removed from the metal bracket to roll it up and down by hand. Have no fear though, it's very easy to do. This map would look great hanging in your library or study or would serve as a great educational work of art in your child's bedroom! On the lower right hand side of the map is an illustration detailing the lengths of the principal rivers in the Eastern hemisphere as well as a view of the North Pole as seen from above. On the lower left hand side of the map is an illustration detailing the heights ... moreof the principal mountains in the Eastern hemisphere. Very cool! Additional details: Measurements(with bracket) Approximately 51.25" Long x 39.75” wide Circa: 1920's Item Condition: Good antique condition! Colors remain bold and vivid. As noted above. You will need to roll up/down the map by hand due to its fragile nature. Surface of map has light soilage from years and years of use. Canvas has some normal wear such as wrinkles, bends, frayed edges, light soilage, spotting, etc. We believe that at one point a wooden rod would have been attached to the bottom of the map. As you can see, it's no longer attached. Remnants of the green canvas material that the rod would have attached to can still be seen running along the bottom. The bottom quarter of the map shows significant wear, including remnants of tape, liquid stains and deterioration of the map's surface which has begin to expose the canvas material beneath. The canvas material below remains intact, holding the map together nicely. There is also some light liquid staining running along the the left and right edges of the map. Vintage 1914 School Pulldown Wall Map-World Eastern Hemisphere-W & A K Johnston
Here for sale is a vintage map published by W& A K Johnston in 1914 as part of the Popular Edition Series. It came with several similar maps from the"Unrivaled Series" of 1914 published by Johnston. I obtained this map and 6 other maps from a collection of maps used in a one room school in Welch. Minnesota. The maps had a slight odor of age which has improved substantially since I took them out of their holder. The map measures about 38 by 48 inches. And has rollers on each end. The map has condition issues as shown in the photo. Including tearing and scraping, mostly along the bottom, and along the extreme edges. There are some small tears in the map too. Map has some staining or darkening, again mostly along the bottom, and could use a cleaning. Please see the photos to observe condition. The colors on most of the map are ... morenice, and so some restoration would be helpful. I will be happy to combine shipping upon multiple purchases.

Up for auction is an old antique map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Asia. Europe, Africa, and Australia. Below the map it says, Published by Samuel Walker, Boston. I am not exactly sure what year this map was printed, but I believe this map is from the mid 1800's. The overall condition is fair with good color, but there are some yellowish brown spots that you can see in the pictures. The spots are probably from age, but perhaps it took on some moisture at some point over the years. The paper though is great with a nice cream color and no tears, creases, or other defects to mention. The size of the entire paper is 10.5" x 8.5" and the diameter of the map is 7.25" This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. Original, steel-engraved map of Eastern Hemisphere- Australia, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Description: A fascinating 1852 map of the Eastern Hemisphere issued by George Frederick Cruchley. It offers a fascinating snapshot of the world during a period of rapid globalization and discovery. And includes entirety of Asia, Europe and Africa as well as Australia and much of the Pacific. The map is color coded according to continents with countries, major cities, rivers, mountains and other topographical features noted. Relief is shown by hachures. Vast stretches of unmapped territory and speculative cartography fill central Africa and Australia. Antarctica is only tenuously denoted, reflecting the primitive state of exploration in the region. In Africa, Lake Moravi(Lake Malawi) ... moreis shown speculatively. Neither Mt. Kenya nor Mt. Kilimanjaro are present though the apocryphal Mountains of the Moon stretch across the continent. The White Nile is shown originating from the Donga Mountains. In China, the Great Wall is identified. The sea between Japan and Korea, whose name, either the'Sea of Korea' or the'Sea of Japan' is currently a matter of historical and political dispute between the two countries, is here identified in favor of Japan. Cruchley's General Atlas was unique for its period, employing a vivid color scheme extending even to the oceans, distinctive typography, and various uncommon decorative elements including a peacock feather crown and an imprint medallion, both of which break the printed border. Though many of the maps in this atlas are copyrighted in 1841, the atlas was first published in 1843 from the Cruchley office at 81 Fleet Street, London, and proving popular went through numerous reissues well into the 1850s.
