Antique Solid Brass Ship's Telegraph M. H. Co.
This auction is for an old solid brass ship's telegraph made by The M. H. Company. It measures 10 5/8 inches in lenght and 8 1/8 inches in diameter. And weighs 16 lbs. As you can see in the photos it is used. The handle moves freely but the bell ring does not ring. In picture#10 you can see what looks like four pulleys, not sure if that has something to do with the bell. I am not really familiar with this, so I am describing it as it was told to me. I cannot see any thing that looks broken. Everything appears to be solid brass, which has a great aged patina. I tried to rescearch the M. H. Company but could find any information on them. It is in good condition and would be an excellent restoration project. Outer cast iron red shell has original key still attached and original numbers“347” Nothing has been done to restore- appears to be all original paint- see photos as it is worn. Front says. Fire Alarm Telegraph Station” and“Gamewell Fire Alarm Telegraph Company, New York. The sides still have some of the original diagonal white stripe paint as well. Inside is the smaller white box that says. Pull the hook down once and let go. This box appears to contain a huge majority of all of the original pieces and functioning parts. There is an original glass piece and a couple of bolts in one photo. It appears there are a few ... morepieces missing- ie a spring to hold the glass in, a lever, etc. Please see pictures closely. I do pack items very well, and ship out very quickly. As a collector and buyer myself, I know how disappointing it can be to receive an item that has been literally destroyed due to shoddy packaging. It seems like there is no shortage of these types on ebay. Although I have no control whatsoever how an item is handled on its way to the buyer, I do make sure it is well protected in the box, and should arrive safe and sound, regardless of a few bumps and scrapes along the way. This beautiful antique telegraph/morse code sounder was finely crafted by the E.F. Johnson Co. and is a 20 Ohm model. It rests atop an attractive wooden block and black cast iron base. To me. not an expert on these) it appears to be in excellent condition. I imagine it didn't look much different when it was brand new. Retains the original Helsby Telegraph Works Warrington label. Original mahogany case with just minor wear and has developed a beautiful patina over the years.
