CIRCA 1860's U. S. CIVIL WAR FOLK ART PAINTED WOOD CARVING OF A ZOUAVE SOLDIER
Original folk art hand carved& hand painted figure of a Civil War Zouave soldier. We believe that this carving dates circa 1860's& is from the American Civil War era. All surfaces of the wood& the paint show a lovely patina from age. This fascinating& well done folk art wood carving turned up in an estate in the Doylestown. Pa. area. Numerous other items that came out of the estate were from the Civil War period. It is thought that this carving was made by a soldier from Pennsylvania that fought in the Civil War. We have never seen another carving like this one& we have not, as of yet, been able to pin this carving to a specific maker. Perhaps with the right research it could be pinned to a specific carver. This figure of a Zouave soldier is quite skillfully carved. He retains lots of his entirely original multi-colored ... morepaint. The paint is quite rich& retains a lovely patina from age. Many years ago he got chips to his nose. Goatee, mustache. These chipped areas now have much natural patina from age& present nicely with the rest of the surfaces on the figure. There is some wear to the wood on his backpack. The back foot is partially missing, the front foot has some chips, one arm is entirely missing. The figure stands 8 1/2 inches tall not counting the base. The wooden base is a modern addition added so that the figure would stand up. The base measures 2 7/8 inches long by 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch tall. With the base the figure stands at a total of approximately 9 1/4 inches tall. This figure is entirely original in all respects. There are no repairs. No replacements, all of the paint on the figure is entirely original. The lovely patina& the precise condition can be seen in the accompanying photos. While there are no maker's marks or identifying information on the item. It was removed from a chest of vintage ashtrays, matchbooks and military curios dating from early 1940s to late 1950s. The best guess that I can make is that this was hand carved folk art of a German soldier. The lack of identifying information is why the price is fairly low.

The back panel is actually made from three boards and the horse& rider were carved separately and then applied. You can see on the right hand edge that part of the horse's hoof is missing. There also is tip of a leaf missing from the bottom. There is one more problem that I will try to explain; two of the backboards are no longer held together. The carving itself is actually holding the two pieces together. This in no way effects displaying or use of this antique hand carved plaque. Aside from some assorted rubs and light scratches. The rest of this hand carved Roman solider and horse is perfect with no restorations. Antique Wood Drummer Figure Statue Soldier in good overall condition. Its age shows and is a very nice piece for any military collector. Paint is very good considering age and the only real problem is one of the drums has broken off but could easily make and glue a new piece on it. Also the hat has a R in red that I am not sure if it is suppose to have it and may come off with goo gone or might be correct to the piece. Any cleaning or fixing will be left up to the buyer. Hello. You are looking at a pair of beautiful hand carved, hand painted civil war soldiers. These soldiers are 3.5ft high. Weigh aprox 17 pounds. They are so detailed with guns, belts, and uniform. Paint is in great shape for age, normal signs of wear, but there faces are amazing. Vintage as is. Check all photos. One of the soldiers is cracked in the middle, and his hand is broken. Other soldier hat is broken off in front. Looks like they were maybe holding swords also. Easily can be restored, or left as is. All up to the buyer. Never seen a pair of soldiers this big, and in this nice of shape for age. I would say maybe done in 1930s-1950s, maybe earlier, no markings. A great piece of history. For sale is a fabulous serendipitous discovery from an estate sale of an Antique Whirligig Wood Folk Art Toy Soldier that stands 10" tall. This Wood Soldier is estimated to have been made between the mid to late 1800's to very early 1900's but its exact age is unknown. It is hand carved and has a small wooden pin that fits through a small hole in the upper torso with which to connect the two arms to the body. The arms do swivel forward and backward individually.
