This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called âkiyundeâ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of âkulembaâ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. This very adorable little wood carving of a hog—obviously a sow—is carved of a tree native to the Midwest—the American Black Walnut. The artist signed the underside of the sow with Shorty 74. There is wear at the end of the tail which makes me believe that part was inserted into a shoe. The top of the body is where you would hold it to pull and that also has the wear of paint from a grip. The item is from the extreme NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COASTAL REGION. WE ARE ALSO INCLUDING A NATIVE AMERICAN TWINED 2-PIECE SWEET GRASS BASKET IN THE LISTING! This Piece is 23" Tall and weighs nearly 7lbs; The Brave is approx. 5" wide and 14" around the middle. The Piece is carved Red Cedar and appears to be stained with a reddish wash. The Hair on the Brave is"Horse Hair. it is glued on the top; the Brave wears a Natural Colored Leather Piece that Covers the Front& Back, and Natural Colored Leather Moccasins cover the"Feet" but not the bottom of the Feet. This is one of four wooden carved dolls found in a local estate. He is fully clothed with his loin cloth and boots carved into the leg piece. His hair. Headdress and facial features are carved into the head piece which is one with the body. Each arm and leg are jointed to the body. The doll is signed B Morris 1982. Beautiful Hand Carved Wood Native American (?) Bust Signed by the Artist
I found this fantastic piece at a high end antique store in Atlanta. This piece was carved from a solid piece of wood. I'm not an expert but the wood looks almost Ziricote wood from Belize. The detail on this carving is really well done. As you can see in the close up of the necklace. It looks to be a Native American Indian person, but can't be sure. The artist's name is carved into the bottom of the piece as"Avallejos. I tried to find more about the name, and Google says that Vallejos is a common Spanish name, so maybe it's A. Vallejos? Though the name Avallejos Vallejos did come up on Linkedin. I'm not sure the type of wood but it's multi color is amazing. Antique hand carved Native American. Cherokee tribe. Beautiful One Of A Kind Piece. The size is approximately 13" tall. About 4" wide, and about 4" in the widest spot from front to back. Signature carved on the back"J Stancil" I don't know the exact age. My grandmother said he started carving in early 1900's and that this piece is probably from the 1920's-1940's. Very unique and detailed one of a kind hand carved collectors piece. It carries a very mystical positive energy. It was bought from an estate sale of a vintage/ antique collector and dealer. This piece is great shape for how old it is. Has a couple small nicks here and there and the hat shows signs of being glued back together where it obviously was cracked(close up shown in last couple pics) its not that noticeable on display and that's ... morethe only major flaw. WOOD CARVED NATIVE MAN PRIMITIVE STATUE I am not an expert on primitive or tribal art and unfortunately I do not know anything about this carving except that it appears to have some age to it. DESCRIPTION Indian/ Native Tribal Man with large ceremonial headpiece. My guess is that it could be South American or perhaps Mexican. It measures 7 inches high x 3 inches wide x 1.5 inches deep The wood in dark(maybe with a stain? and it feels very smooth to the touch. Detailed hair and facial expression. There is a hairline crack in the wood on the back(see photo) But it looks like it was there in the wood when it was carved. It's not spreading. PLEASE VIEW THE PHOTOS- WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!
