Vintage Folk Art Wood Carving Sow Pig Hog Native Black Walnut Tree Wire Tail
This very adorable little wood carving of a hog—obviously a sow—is carved of a tree native to the Midwest—the American Black Walnut. The artist signed the underside of the sow with Shorty 74. The carving is very well done and anatomically correct for a sow. With the ears of a Yorkshire hog, and a curly wire tail. It is in excellent vintage condition and measures 3” long, 1 ½” high, and 1” wide Please keep in mind this is not a new item. I try to describe items as accurately as possible. But cannot always detail each flaw. Crazing and manufacturing flaws such as pin heads, color variations, straw marks, bubbles, inclusions, and other manufacturing anomalies are considered normal for glass, china, and pottery of age. This very unusual carving was collected in the Truk Islands Atoll in the 1960's but is probably somewhat older. The base is signed but difficult to read although the word Truk can be made out. It is 15" tall with a base of about 4" in diameter and has been carved from a mangrove tree root. The woman has a bowl used to pound taro on her head. It has a wonderful aged patina.

Beautiful antique hand carved Native American. One Of A Kind! Signature carved on the back says"J Stancil" I don't know the exact age. My grandmother said he started carving in early 1900's and that this piece is probably from the 1920's-1940's. Very unique and detailed one of a kind hand carved collectors piece. It carries a very positive energy. It was bought from an estate sale of a vintage/ antique collector and dealer. In great shape for how old it is. Vintage Central American Tribal Native Carved Hardwood Two Faced Janus Figure
This fine figure is a bit of an enigma to me and I would greatly appreciate the help of more knowledgeable Ebayers in pinning down the possible tribal origins of this piece. Originally bought at auction in San Francisco from the estate of a well known California collector of primitive art. Name will be supplied to purchased. If sold for provenance purposes. His notes, attached to the figure when I bought it state" Central America Native Carved Wood Janus Figure(Two Faced) A Good Example of Native Carving' Measures 14" 36 cm in height. In fine condition. Silky smooth patina and great contrast colouring of carved areas in high relief. Appears to be a two faced'Janus' figure. Janus figure' is a common label for figures which have two faces. Reminding some of the two headed Roman deity Janus. What I find particularly ... moreinteresting is that one side of this carving has a long vertical handle like element(see photos) Suggests to me that it was carved to be carried. Perhaps in some ceremony or ritual of some sort. Looks particularly dramatic when displayed on a shelf against a white wall. ANTIQUE VINTAGE TRIBAL SOUTH AMERICAN? WOOD CARVED NATIVE MAN PRIMITIVE STATUE I am not an expert on primitive or tribal art and unfortunately I do not know anything about this carving except that it appears to have some age to it. DESCRIPTION Indian/ Native Tribal Man with large ceremonial headpiece. My guess is that it could be South American or perhaps Mexican. It measures 7 inches high x 3 inches wide x 1.5 inches deep The wood in dark(maybe with a stain? and it feels very smooth to the touch. Detailed hair and facial expression. There is a hairline crack in the wood on the back(see photo) But it looks like it was there in the wood when it was carved. It's not spreading. PLEASE VIEW THE PHOTOS- WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!
