Vintage Tramp Art Wood Toy* Chickens Feeding* This is a truly unique. Vintage toy, handmade of wood. That appears to date from the 1930s or 1940s. It is a little paddle with 5 chickens whose heads bob up and down as they"eat" from the"feed" painted in orange and yellow on the paddle. Each chick is painted white with black feather and wing outlines and red mouths and combs. The movement of the heads is caused by the movement of a lead sinker attached by string to the neck of each chicken and strung through holes in the paddle to the bottom. Lift up the paddle and the heads all raise. Place the paddle down on a surface. And all the heads go down to"eat" There is no maker's mark of any kind on this toy. There is the remainder of some kind of label on the paddle bottom but no identifying marks. I have this toy ... moresetting on 2 egg cups so that you can see the workings. Nice looking. Hand carved, heavy, wall hanger. Looks to me like primitive tramp or folk art, I'm not sure, unknown age and maker. I found this at a NC Estate Sale. So I know nothing of the history. It does have a metal hanger attached to the back with small nails, and they are all rusted. Has a nice patina. Antique Finely-carved Black Forest TREE TRUNK candlesticks - Tramp Folk Art
Two superbly carved"tree trunk" 3-candle candlestick holders. Late 19th or possibly early 20th century. Black Forest/ German. Both sticks are in excellent condition with no damage or cracks. Excellent surface finish, color, patina. Perfect for a cozy den, a rustic cabin, a mountain/lodge-style home. Perfect for display during Christmas/holiday season with red or green candles. Note that the fine carving appears on all sides(i.e. 360 degrees) of the candlesticks, as show in the photos. A"V" mark is carved in the bottom of each base. Dimensions of candlesticks are 13 1/2" tall x 5" max. width. Base is 4 1/2" wide. Very low reserve price that is far below the price I paid for these candlesticks many years ago. Remarkable estate piece is a genuine example of vintage hand carved wood American tramp/folk art. Intricately carved. The figure evokes definitive homespun, primitive qualities of another time. This perched owl is a very rare and unique collectible item. Owl is 5 1/2 inches in height by 3 inches in width at its widest area. The color is a medium brown wood. Which has an unfinished appearance. Color is darker than what is shown. In taking the photos. They either came out far too dark or much too light. I utilized the lighter photos here, but please do keep this in mind. Although heavy. The owl does sit on flat surface and wobbles front to back slightly, when touched. See condition description below for more. ... moreThis piece was displayed most of its life in a dark enclosed. Glass"lawyer's bookcase" since the late 1940s. Condition: Hand carved piece is in'good' pre-owned vintage condition. Random discoloration to the unfinished wood. Likely due to handling. There is an unknown substance on the underside of the piece which appears to be some sort or dry wood putty or perhaps filler. Item is a bit darker than the photos show. So do keep this in mind when viewing the photos. Item does sit flat although it does wobble a bit from front to back and can easily lean backward when touched(due to the body position of the owl. So this will need to be placed in an area where it will not fall and possibly the addition of felt pads. The original owner was a pipe smoker. Although a smoke smell is not detected. I have a larger. It is carved from 5 layers of chip-carving on the top. The box is German. C1880, 5 1/2" tall. 10" wide, and 5 3/4" deep. It is decorated with various bronze decorations. Such as cupids, fruit and flower basket, enamel painted four leaf clovers and a lion head. The mirror on the inside has an inscription in German: To Remember Me By. The wood of the box has a very pretty dark rich walnut patina. There is surface dust on the outside. And some loss of cloth in the side handle area. The inside is lined with a tufted material. For Auction today is a Wooden Folk Art Figure. I believe he is a"Drifter" or"Tramp" He is 20" in Height and about 6" across the shoulders. He is playing the Pan Pipes and carries all his belongings over his shoulder. He is also holding a bag in his hand. I really have no idea when he was carved. Given his attire. I would guess that his image is based on an 1930's Drifter. His face is very expressive and there is an almost pained look in his eyes. I hope the piece finds a good home.
