He has red painted eyes with black pupils and a huge beak which is painted a beigy yellow and the inside is painted red and shows the hand carving strokes of the carver. This is certainly a one of a kind item- I have a smaller one in an auction but I have never again seen ... morethem anywhere else. This could be used for a myriad of purposes- pens and pencil holder, paper clips, safety pins, stamps, etc. It would also be great on a night stand to hold earrings or miscellaneous jewelry. Offered is a wonderful little Brienz bear with glass eyes. He's approx. 3.25 in. high and is beautifully detailed. Even his inner legs have been intricately carved. Very nice! He may have originally held a sewing implement.possibly a pin cushion?or box of wooden matches? He appears to be in very good vintage condition. No chips. Cracks or repairs. This bear is is hand carved and he has cute little black glass eyes and is extensively carved- almost showing each hair of his fur. He stands on a little decorated platform and holds a glass vase that has a hand etched floral decor. It comes from the unsold stock of Jobin in Brienz. Switzerland. Hand Carved Scrooge NutCracker The detail on this hand carved nutcracker is amazing. I tried to give you an accurate visual description. But my picture do not do it justice. I believe the figure depicts Scrooge from the Christmas Carol. He is wearing a night cap over his shoulder length hair. His eyeglasses are amazing the way they are carved to sit on the bridge of his nose and he is looking over the top of them. He even has an ascot and teeth! The 2 sides are held together with a wooden peg and a small nail. The nutcracker opens an d closes smo othly and is st ructurally sound. He measures approx. 7" long x 2 1/2" wide. This beautifully hand carved wood Lion of Lucerne clothes brush was undoubtedly purchased in Switzerland on the"Grand Tour" in early 1900's. It replicates the Lion Monument by Bertel Thorvaldsen in Lucerne. Switzerland which commemorated the Swiss Guards who died defending Marie Antionette in the French Revolution. The Roman Numerals, MDCCXCII" are carved under the lion and translate to the year 1792. It measures 7 1/4 inches X 1 7/8 inches and has natural bristles. Note that none are missing. Up for bid is an old vintage hand carved wooden whistle signed"Interlaken" Interlaken is a beautiful Swiss resort town that was very popular before WWII. The whistle was likely a souvenir from someones vacation a long time ago. It measures 5-1/2" long and nearly 1" in diameter. The whistle is in perfect working condition but the age is evident upon inspection of the eyes and the nose/beak. The design appears to be a birds head as far as I can tell. The wood has been carefully carved and then branded to look like feathers and the eyes look like black bakelite. Celluloid or possibly glass. The eyes have some cracks and chips in them. The beak is a round wooded dow painted black and pressed into place. The wood the whistle is carved from looks like it could be birch but I am no expert on wood so I could be wrong. It was originally made to hold milk when the cor herds would go up to the alps and milk the cows on the meadows. They would carry the milk in this item strapped to their back. Nowadays. These items are also used for a myriad of purposes. It is carved and decorated on the outside in a type of notch carving and the carved boards are held together with an intertwined wooden band. The wood has a nice rich patina and this item has a higher handle so it could also hang on a wall and be filled with straw flowers. It is composed of many carved slats to give it this oval shape and one has ... moreshrunk slightly so there is a small opening between two slats. This happened in Colorado because of the dryness so it probably wouldn't hold liquids anymore but this could also be remedied by wetting the boards. Wonderful FOLK ART Wood Carved DYING LION Statue- LION MONUMENT Switzerland Description CARVED WOODEN DYING LION I am pleased to offer this wonderful solid wood carved dyling lion statue. Measuring 3-3/4" long by 1-3/4" high and 1-1/2" deep. Sculpture is a copy of the Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland which was created in stone in 1792 to commemorate the mercenary Swiss soldiers who lost their lives serving French King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. The roman numberals carved on the base reveals the death toll among the French soldiers as well as the number of surviving ones. Beautiful detail work captures the detail of the lion including depth of the mane, muscle structure and mournful expression. This sculpture has been around awhile, but shows no wear and tear, just the fabulous rich patina of old wood. A wonderful ... moreexample for your collection!

ANTIQUE HAND CARVED FIGURE MADE IN SWITZERLAND 2 3/4" TALL
My grandfather collected wood carvings for many years. He passed away in 1984. I don't know the age of this but I'm sure it was before 1960 or earlier.
