Beautiful large antique hand carved Black Forest center piece. The work shows two deer. Male and female, sitting and standing next to a tree. The patina is wonderful, and the carving is of exceptional quality. Height is approximately 14 inches, width is 7 1/2 inches at widest point. There are some minor losses on the tree that need to re carved, as well as antlers on the deer need some work. I have seen these sculptures in antique shops for many thousands. Gorgeous pair of Victorian Black Forest hand carved wood candlesticks signed"br nr or nt" they date to circa 1860-1880(definitely prior to 1900) See the scans for details. They were originally made in Brienz Switzerland from the Interlaken region. That is probably what the"br" stands for(Brienz) The"nr or nt" probably stands for the carver's initials. Both candlesticks are clearly signed twice each on the base. Each candlestick has two game birds for hunting(pheasant. Quail, or partridge) standing under ornately carved oak trees with excellent acorn clusters& oak leaves. Both pieces are highly detailed& the ornate carving extends all the way around each one. Pair of Wall Shelf; one with a CHAMOIS carved head and Oak Leaves. One with a IBEX carved head Oak Leaves, both have Glass Eyes, hand carved wood, original eyelet hooks for hanging. 6 inches High x 4.5inches Wide x 3 inches Deep I purchased them over 20 years ago from a seller in Europe in their original condition. No repairs have been made, furniture wax is the only application made to these carvings. I used a string between the two to hang with one nail to minimize wall holes. These are quite heavy pieces and have very detailed workmanship. The teeth and tongues are remarkable. The eyes are glass or beads. the paint on the tongue and claws is still vibrant. There is great detail in the fur around the neck and chin. The ears and noses are not broken. The bears are dusty but I didn't want to clean them for fear of ruining the patina. The classic edges of the wood shout old world Black Forest. The dovetailed joints are fantastic. The screws used to hold the bear in place from the bottom are slotted screws as opposed to Phillips head. Approximately: one weighs 1 pound 3.5 ounces. RARE 1880's HANDCARVED BLACK FOREST WOODEN FIGURE NUTCRACKER AAFA The Black Forest region of Germany along with the nearby Alpine regions of Austria. Switzerland and France have produced many hand carved nutcrackers, particularly from the late 19th century onwards. And though Switzerland produced the majority of these nutcrackers they are often referred to as Black Forest. Designs included animals, male and female faces, standing and sitting figures and more. Most were indirect lever nutckrackers. It can be used to crack nuts in the lever and also in the mouth, however, many early black forest nutcrackers have been damaged using the latter method. This 1880's example is one of the earliest Black Forest nutcrackers. Considering his over 100 years of use he has survived very nicely. If you check photo number one you will notice a chip ... moreon the right-hand side of his lip, judging from the color this was done a long time ago. There is also a very small chip on the back near the handle. He is a little stiff when you open and close his mouth. Otherwise he is in very good condition. It is a tradition in some families to have a collection of Black Forest Nutcrackers which they bring out at Christmas. Often adding a new one each year. This would certainly be a valuable addition. Rare Antique 1940s Black Forest Wooden Hand-carved Horse Statue
Rare 1940s Black forest Germany hand-carved jumping horse. Excellent craftsmanship not seen today. This is from an estate sale and was puported to have been brought back from Germany by a returning service man after WW2. It is made of wood. Linden. Pine, and Walnut are common woods found in the Black Forest and used to make Cuckoo clocks and other hand carved items.I cannot say for sure just what this wood is, possibly Walnut. For such an old piece this horse is in good condition. One can see where a break on a leg was once repaired long ago. There is also a small crack on the other leg but not noticable. One ear seems to have been repaired by maker as the carvings and patina are overall the same. There may be other small flaws but I cannot find any except age related wear. The base has been fitted with a brass lamp post which is removable ... moreand brass feet. This would certainly make a beautiful conversational lamp. A similar horse was recently listed for $1200 and sold on Ruby Lane. It too was from the Black Forest. No two horses are alike as they are hand-carved. Overall height on stand is 24" x 7.5" wide +/ Horse alone is 14"+/ Long-nose to tail. 16"=/ high, 3.5" wide. Notice how the back hooves are pegged to fit into the stand. Rare Antique Black Forest Carved Wood Grotesque Antler Hat Rack 19th C. Gothic
For your consideration. An antique Black Forest carved wood antler hat rack in a rare gothic grotesque form, circa 19th century Germany. The rack is in good vintage condition with no major cracks, chips, or wear to the face. A shallow crack runs along the back of the wood originating from a knot in the wood grain. The antler is attached via a large screw. The antler does pivot about 1/2 an inch on the screw but IS STABLE. The antler end on the right does rest against the wall and the wooden piece sits slightly raised as a result, the rack was likely made to originally be hung on a large post. RARE BLACK FOREST Hand Carved GERMAN NUTCRACKER MAN ORIGINAL PAINT BRASS BUTTONS
Here is an original hand carved Black Forest nutcracker from Germany. The nutcracker features a well-carved man in a crouched position. He is wearing a painted orange vest with 8 small brass tacts for buttons. Along with a sport coat that has 6 larger brass"buttons. The brim of his tasseled stocking cap, his tufts of hair, and shoes are painted black. He also has black and white painted eyes, and actual metal teeth inside his mouth, which adds to the nutcracker's charm. There are two splits in the vest part of the nutcracker, but the nutcracker remains sturdy and strong. There is a faint stamp on the bottom that reads GERMANY. Nutcracker measures 12" tall and stands on a 4" by 3.5" base. I am not an expert on nutcrackers, but this one is unique and unlike any others I have seen on eBay. Rare well carved nutcracker with exceptional detail. He is unusual in that he is full bodied standing on his feet without a base. Shows teeth when his mouth is open. I have been unable to find another like it in my research. Acquired from a private collection in southern NH. In excellent condition. Measures 8 inches tall. 2 1/2 inches wide without the handle. With the handle 3 1/2 inches wide across the middle. Across the front he measures 2 ½ inches. Amazing detail throughout the carving.
