Thought it was kind of odd and ugly, but it grew on me and I did think it was very unique, and I have never seen anything like it. I have sold a few weird looking ceramic cats and one other large wooden cat on ebay, but nothing like this. I have searched every way possible, past sold items and current items and I can't find anything like this. It measures 14 inches tall. It is not marked with any name. It appears to be one single piece of wood with very thick grain. And there is a circle in the head, I am assuming for a candle, so it is like a very large cat shaped candle(votive or tea-lite) holder. I was thinking a child might have painted this, but the cutting of the actual wood piece would ... morehave been by someone that knew what they were doing, very smooth curves and lines, very symetrical. This one is the third of three wooden roosters from the estate collection. The paint has chips and has probably seen better days has a few dings to the beak and sits on a steel iron rod. The wings are lovely they are hallow and meticulously hand crafted as is the entire wooden rooster and base. What an excellent piece of folk art to add to your collection. Up for bids is this Antique American Folk Art Carved& Painted Birds In Nest Wood Carving. This piece was most likely carved in Pennsylvania in the mid 20thC but could be a little earlier. The carving depicts three baby birds and their mother that are sitting on the edge of their nest. The baby birds eyes look to be nails and the mother bird's eyes look like tacks. They are attached to the nest with thick wire legs. The birds are wood and nest are wood but the nest has composition covering it to give it a more realistic look. All of the paint on this piece is original. There are no breaks or repairs to this piece but I do believe that 2 baby birds were either never added or they are missing. CIRCA 1860's U. S. CIVIL WAR FOLK ART PAINTED WOOD CARVING OF A ZOUAVE SOLDIER
Original folk art hand carved& hand painted figure of a Civil War Zouave soldier. We believe that this carving dates circa 1860's& is from the American Civil War era. All surfaces of the wood& the paint show a lovely patina from age. This fascinating& well done folk art wood carving turned up in an estate in the Doylestown. Pa. area. Numerous other items that came out of the estate were from the Civil War period. It is thought that this carving was made by a soldier from Pennsylvania that fought in the Civil War. We have never seen another carving like this one& we have not, as of yet, been able to pin this carving to a specific maker. Perhaps with the right research it could be pinned to a specific carver. This figure of a Zouave soldier is quite skillfully carved. He retains lots of his entirely original multi-colored ... morepaint. The paint is quite rich& retains a lovely patina from age. Many years ago he got chips to his nose. Goatee, mustache. These chipped areas now have much natural patina from age& present nicely with the rest of the surfaces on the figure. There is some wear to the wood on his backpack. The back foot is partially missing, the front foot has some chips, one arm is entirely missing. The figure stands 8 1/2 inches tall not counting the base. The wooden base is a modern addition added so that the figure would stand up. The base measures 2 7/8 inches long by 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch tall. With the base the figure stands at a total of approximately 9 1/4 inches tall. This figure is entirely original in all respects. There are no repairs. No replacements, all of the paint on the figure is entirely original. The lovely patina& the precise condition can be seen in the accompanying photos. On offer is this carved wooden pig. Painted grey. In a sitting position. With a well-detailed and realistic face. The pig measures approximately 12" high, 14" in length, and 17" diagonally from nose to tip of tail. It is in fairly good condition, with a few tiny spots of paint loss. Also the wood has split a bit along one ear and at the joint of one leg. I'm not sure of the exact vintage of this piece, but it has been in my family for at least 35 years. In another listing. Of Merrill Baumgardner, who was apparently a prolific collector, but many of the items were the possessions and collection of Helen Pope who had resided at the home since 1984 at the latest, according to local records. The collection was rich in Art Deco items of many flavors. Here is one of Helen's chotschkies. A beautiful old hand carved Hound dog, with classic black and tan features handpainted, no doubt someone's favorite old dog of childhood, perhaps. It took a skilled hand to carve the perfectly proportioned legs and tail. Which are of very narrow diameter, but the carver did it perfectly. Henry the Hound is only a little over ... more3" from nose to tail. And 2" to top of head. He is definitely a male dog as you can see clearly in the side profile image, and it was a particularly skillful carver to capture his gender. for such a little wooden dog. Black Forest? Antique Carved Wood Figure Woman Painted Folk Art
I purchased this wood carving in Oregon from a man who was selling the contents of a barn or large shed. He said that many of the things that he was selling were from an antique business that he had retired from. He did not tell me anything about this carving other than he thought it to be pretty old. It looks and feels somewhat old to me also. I would guess its age to be from the early 20th or possibly 19th century. Otherwise. I do not know anything about its history. I think that it might be a Black Forest carving. The wood feels relatively light and looks and feels somewhat aged or dry. I would guess that it is some kind of pine. It appears to have been carved from a single piece of wood. The base measures close to 4 by 1 ¾ inches. It measures close to 5 inches tall. It weighs about 3 ounces. The condition is much like you see it ... morein the photos. A line across a front corner of the base indicates were the corner has been apparently broken off and nailed back into the place. The nails are rusty and I think that the damage and repair may have been done by the carver. Otherwise. There are no breaks, cracks or chips. The couple of tiny white spots that you see look, under magnification, as old as the carving and are an off-white color. I think that they are probably paint from when it was painted. There are areas where the paint or the wood look worn or possibly soiled. Otherwise, it is fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition.
