This is a nice vintage or antique wood carving of the Lion of Lucerne. It is app. 7 x 5 and 3/4 inches deep. It is very detailed and there is no damage. There is a small hole at the top center of the back which I believe was for the original hook. I would guess the taped on type was added later. This beautifully hand carved wood Lion of Lucerne clothes brush was undoubtedly purchased in Switzerland on the"Grand Tour" in early 1900's. It replicates the Lion Monument by Bertel Thorvaldsen in Lucerne. Switzerland which commemorated the Swiss Guards who died defending Marie Antionette in the French Revolution. The Roman Numerals, MDCCXCII" are carved under the lion and translate to the year 1792. It measures 7 1/4 inches X 1 7/8 inches and has natural bristles. Note that none are missing. Vintage, Antique Miniature Hand Carved Wood LION OF LUCERNE Sculpture
The original sculpture in Lucerne. Switzerland was designed by Bethel Thorvaldsen, and carved into stone by Lukas Ahorn in 1820-1821. It was created as a commemoration to the Swiss guards massacred during the French Revolution when the Tuilleries Palace in Paris was stormed by revolutionaries in 1792. This is a miniature replica, hand carved from one piece of wood, having the Roman numerals MDCCXCII for the 1792 date. It appears that the piece above the spear head may have once had a round shield with a cross outlined in it. I would not have taken notice of that without doing research on the piece. So, it may have broken off, or the carver did not reproduce it with it. That spot is worn smooth. This is quite old with a lovely worn patina. It measures approximately 6" x 1 3/4" x 2 3/4" tall. This is(likely) an antique hand-carved wooden Lion of Lucerne. It is inscribed with the words"Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" and is dated MDCCXCII or"To the Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss- 1792" It measures approximately 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" and is about 2 1/4" high. There is an actual carving in stone that commemorates the many fallen men of the Swiss Guard who died trying to protect the French royal family from rebels in 1792. The dying lion. Impaled by a spear, covers a shield bearing the French monarchy's fleur-de-lis emblem. Beside him is the Swiss shield. There are some wear marks at the corners of the base. On the back of the Swiss shield, the back of the lion, his nose, and on his hind quarters. There may be some slight wood loss to the Swiss shield and tip of the spear, and the lion's paw and ... moremane. The spear tip from the lion's body is missing. See pics. Vintage Lion of Lucerne Wood Carving This is a very nicely carved"Lion of Lucerne" or"Lion Monument" which is in Lucerne Switzerland and commemorated the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. The mortally wounded lion rests on two shields. One with the coat-of-arms of Switzerland and one with the French Fleur-de-lis. The dedicationHelvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti translates as To the Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss. The base is 4 7/8" x 1 5/8" and it is about 2" tall. This beautifully carved representation(approx. 5" x 6" of the Lion Monument in Lucerne. Sw. was given to my husband by his favorite Aunt. She purchased it in Lucerne in 1920 after seeing the Monument on her visit there and compared the way it made her feel to her seeing the"Pieta" in Rome. When he was in Lucerne in 1980, my husband visited the Monument and took the photograph that he affixed with tape to the back of the carving. We are breaking up housekeeping and need to find a"good home" for it. Mark Twain praised the sculpture of a mortally-wounded lion as"the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. The Lion lies in his lair in the perpendicular face of a low cliff— for he is carved from the living rock of the cliff. His size is colossal. His attitude is noble. His head is bowed, the broken ... morespear is sticking in his shoulder, his protecting paw rests upon the lilies of France. Vines hang down the cliff and wave in the wind, and a clear stream trickles from above and empties into a pond at the base, and in the smooth surface of the pond the lion is mirrored, among the water-lilies.
