this is an exquisite antique hand carved wooden Buddha sculpture from Thailand. it is beautifully lacquered with a red lacquer and has a nice gold gilt covering. it has a nice patina from age and some gold gilt has faded giving it a wonderful look. it is cut fro a solid piece of wood and very detailed. the eyes are inlaid with ox bone and the headdress has glass inlays. the base is also beautifully cut. Lacquered, and gilted, and also has exquisite glass inlays it is a pretty large carving and measures 13 by 8 3/4 inches. there is a couple cracks on parts of the piece but at to the age of the piece. the hand was once broken and repaired. And missing a finger, but a bit hard to notice. otherwise in great shape. Up for sale is this pair of stunning antique carved wood and gilt gesso altar candlesticks. The carving is wonderful with a gold gilt finish and a pricket end. there are 3 carved claw feet. They come from a private Conn estate and measure 19 1/2" x 4 1/2. The are in good condition but when them being so old there are some signs of wear in some areas that only add to their beauty in my opinion. From a historic Kentucky estate. This is a wonderful pair of continental carved gilt wood candle holders. The cherubs. Angels, or putti each hold one thin candle. They appear to be all original. They are gold gilt gesso over carved wood. Notice the faces and hair.I love the poses. Very well done. I have included photos of the undersides of the holders, one with the felt pad pulled back, to show the early method of construction and the red base paint. The heirs to this estate believed these were at least late 18th or early 19th century. There were several items from European churches in the collection including other carved and gilt wood building trim, candlesticks, and photo frames. The flared candle fittings& bobeches themselves are metal and in a very early European design. These are superb decorator pieces and hard to find. MEASURES: ... moreeach is approximately 7" tall to the top of the holder and one is 5.5" and the other is 4.5"at their widest points. CONDITION:AS SHOWN.one holder has a damaged hand but it is there and someone has added candle wax over the years to stabilize the holder. You can see the original metal pin showing at the wrist. This is very minor for this type of ware. And easily fixed if you desire. They each have minor chips on the toes and fingers. Early carved gilt wood featuring angel wings with an hour glass in the center and a coiled snake. Great subject. These architectural carvings are extremely light and delicate. The newer pieces are heavier and quite often have plaster over the wood. The patina is excellent. Condition good. Just a break in the wood protruding out of the snakes mouth. I did consider shortening both but decided to leave this option for the new owner. There are a couple of nail holes in the wings. Movement and vibrancy- the inner feathers look very ruffly and tousled. It is a poetic design. One could say the angel radiates peace and harmony as the outer design is very neat. Symmetrical and circular, yet at her center there is a vibrancy and energy. Perhaps symbolizing her heart or soul. Gilded with gold applied over gesso and bole. Carved from a light-weight finely grained hardwood. Likely linden or ... morelime. This is a frieze. With flat back; it likely once adorned an altar or other religious structure. As you can see in the photos this angel really shines when brightly lit; the gilding is ever so lovely. It is real gold. There was no synthetic gold in the 1800s. Gesso(plaster) and bole(red pigment clay) were applied over the carved wood to provide a smooth surface for the gold; the bole lends the gold a rich red undertone. Condition- Some age crackling and loss to gilding. Not too bad. Looks wonderful from the front. The back shows some repair. This is a delicate old piece. The wood is very dry and fragile. And parts of the carving are quite thin and fragile as a result. I feel this was removed from its mount at some point. Likely an altar or other religious decor, as I see old adhesive residue on the back. Back shows some glue reinforcement/ repair to damage in two spots. A tassel and the middle swag piece are reattached with glue. Another repair to wing tip is likely original to the time of the carving's creation. The hole and rivet to hang this may have been added later. The only repair that is noticed from the front. And then only under close examinatio

Welcomes You Up for auction is a vintage hand carved hand painted Gilded white wooden angel. This angel came from a French Designer's Estate sale in North Everett Washington. It was originally purchased at Nordstroms. And still has the original price tag, and a sticker that reads AYB. The angel's face is white, with hand painted gold and back eyes, textured gold hair, and layered wings. Large, carved three dimensional wings surround the angel and end in the shape of a heart. Both wings have raised feathers, and wisp like striations throughout. Due to being vintage, the angel does have some ware. There are some slight scuff marks on the paint, and minor cracks in the wood. This angel exudes a look of serenity and innocence. Chazhou Gilt Lacquered Relief Wood Carvings Antique Qin China Pair Silk Framed
Here are a pair of Chazhou Gilt& Lacquered Carved Wood Relief Carvings that have been exquisitely framed in 9 1/2 x 13" raw silk& gold leaf frames. Each wood carving is 8" x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" deep. They are gilt& red lacquered, having scenes of temples,towering trees and people in everyday scenes. They are in very good condition, with one of the happy boys missing the top of his hand. There is a bridge, a temple god& possibly a boat he sails on. I have done lots of research on these carvings-since they are an estate find from a grand estate on the island of Palm Beach, Fl. I wanted to know all I could, this is what I have found: In Chaozhou. The ridge, brim and the external wall of the houses are always decorated with brick carving or stone carving; but the wood carvings are installed on the lintels and chapiters ... moreof the doors, windows and the front corridors. As for furniture such as folding screens, tables, beds, cupboards and lampwicks all are decorated with wood carvings. In the past wood carvings were very commonly found in articles used in sacrificial ceremonies such as tabernacles and candleholders. Choazhou wood carving began as early as the Tang Dynasty(618-907) And developed rapidly in the Song(960-1279) and Ming(1368-1644) Dynasties. It reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911) At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, overseas Chinese came back in floods to build many ancestral temples and magnificent houses. They used a great deal of Chaozhou wood carving in their splendid buildings. Most of the present-day wood carvings are from that period. Local lumber is used for Chaozhou wood carving. Of course. The choice of lumber varies according to the wood carving. For example, wood carvings used in architecture are always made of fir and wood carvings used in furniture are always made of camphor. Chaozhou wood carving is closely related to the life of the common people and their feelings and taste. Its themes usually come from mytholog
