BUDDHA: Antique Chinese Sakyamuni Namaskara. Carved. Polychromed Wood late 1800's This is a splendid and venerable statue of the Lord Buddha made in China sometime in the late 1800's. He may be earlier. But I do not think he is any later. He was carved from one piece of wood and then painted. He retains much of his original paint and has a marvelous patina. Our Buddha is seated int the full lotus or adamantine position. Which is usually reserved for images of the Buddha after his enlightenment. He hold his hands at chest level in Namaskara Mudra. The mudra. Or gesture gesture of Praying. This is a slightly unusual mudra for the Buddha. The has an urna the round shape on his forehead which symbolizes a kind of third eye with which he is able to see past the universe of suffering. S amsara. Into the world of Enlightenment. Originally, ... morethere may have been a gemstone in this round space. In the middle of his coiffure he has a round red shape which often appears in Chinese Buddhas. It represents the light of his Teachings emanating outward from him. The curls of his coiffure are painted blue. Which is the traditional color used in Chinese art. H e also has the three rings at his neck which mark him as an individual of great spiritual wisdom. He wears a simple monk's robe which is painted blue with a crimson lining. The two things I particularly admire and love about this image are his facial expression and his wonderful. Complicated patina. His face has a most transcendentally peaceful expression with downcast eyes and a gentle smile. It is one of the most tranquil faces I have ever seen on a Chinese statue. I have a particularly soft spot in my heart for anything old which was painted. And this Buddha was superbly painted. But more to the point, he retains most of his original paint which has acquired a mellow patina over the years. There are some minor losses and some craquelure. But, at least to my eyes, rather than defects, these attest to his antiquity and add immeasurable visual appeal. The surface i

The craftsmanship is amazing with realistic expressive faces and detailed garments that show every fold in the fabric but carved in wood. Mary is 4 inches high and 4 inches long. Joseph is 6 1/4 inches tall. Baby Jesus is 3 1/2 long x 2 inches tall. The features look very French or German. Large Hand Carved Polychromed Sconces from Italy These magnificent Italian polychromed sconces are in the form of a cartouche with motifs of flowing acanthus leaves. C and s-scrolls, palmettes, cut-outs and stylized fleur-de-lys. A wrought iron s-scroll with a fleur-de-lis at one end and a bobeche at the other end hangs gracefully at the bottom center. Both of them have been hand carved. These are not wired. But could be if you needed them wired. Would look stunning on a large wall. Dimensions below are for one sconce. Mom will love it. and they were right but I must truthfully say they don't come much better than this! On offer we have an antique Indonesian(19th C. carved and polychromed corbel or shelf bracket. Carved to look like a ship's figurehead. Measures 16" 41 cm from the top of her head to the hem of her flowing robes. A very dense hardwood. Appears to be teak. Weighs 3 lbs. 4 oz. Note the hands clasped in front holding a pair of cymbals. In the other antique Indonesian wooden items that I have musicians such as this were a frequent element in temple/religious processions. her face is also a master class in line and symmetry. Carved and Polychromed Wood Head for a Santos Figure
This is a very early carved wood head for a Santos or other religious figure. It may be Spanish or Portuguese in origin. But it is certainly Continental. It is made of carved wood and has had at least two layers of polychrome paint that is now in an advanced state of wear. The head likely had a wig attached to it at one time and there is a bit of residue which may be old glue or even a bit of leather still stuck to the top of her head. She has a very delicate and serene visage despite the many years of neglect, and is wonderfully carved. There are holes in her neck and shoulder area that indicate where the head was originally attached to a body. There is also a hole in the top of the head where a crown or halo was attached.
