Ironwood carving is an unusually demeanding art form originated by the Seri Indians, a small tribe that have dwelled in the Sonoran Desert for thousands of years.Once the wood has been gathered, each piece is hand crafted using very simple tools. For sale is a hand carved Javanese statue made in 1964. This one features a Garuda. King of the Eagles and a favorite figure of Javanese mythology. Here Garuda is swooping down and attacking a king. As part of his quest for the Amerta and restoring his mother's honor, Garuda had to cleanse a particular land of its evil inhabitants. Pair of 7 1/2" Signed "TG" Carved Wood Birds Eagle & Raven Inuit Alaska?
This interesting pair of carved wood birds. An eagle and raven, appear to be Alaskan, possibly Inuit. The raven is 7 1/2" tall and the eagle is 7 1/4" They are inscribed with initials, which appear to be"TG" or possibly"TCT" They are nicely carved and finished and painted with a sort of wash of dark gray and black. The eagle is in excellent condition, with a couple faint scratches, shown in close-ups. The raven is excellent with the exception of what appear to be chew marks on his beak, also shown in close-up photos.

My heart skipped a beat when I started to research this old carved wooden Eagle and I learned that John Haley Bellamy at one time worked in Charlestown New Hampshire. This was found at a Town Wide Sale last summer in Charlestown New Hampshire. It caught my eye as something special and very primitive. I have ... moreincluded many pictures to help with details. The Eagle has a large bent nail in the bottom where it was most likely mounted on something with an oval edge. The wings were attached with long nails about 1 3/4" long that are lose most likely with drying over the years need to be reattached to secure them to the bird. This should be done by someone knowledgeable of working with old wood. This wood is very dry. I do not want to damage it so will ship the wings wrapped seperate from the birds body and bottom mount. My pictures do not do justice it is majestic. The Eagle stands about 12" tall and 12" at the widest wing span. John Haley Bellamy 1836- 1914 did not sign most of his art. This was done by a master wood carver and unsigned. On the back is a thin wire for hanging. Briefly- I have a SMOKE& PET FREE home! I scour the world over for the unique items sold here on Ebay. ANTIQUE CARVED& GILDED AMERICAN EAGLE" cellpadding="10" This fine carving of an American Spread Eagle is distinctive in that it is almost a reverse image of the ubiquitous eagles by John Bellamy and copied by the Artistic Carving Co. It is refreshing to find a fine carving that is very much the work of a skilled artisan whose attention to detail is exceptional. And does not appear to be the work of John Bellamy or the Artistic Carving Co. of Boston. In the same context t he shield of the United States is shown on the viewer's left. Rather than the more prevalent right with three arrows clutched in his left talon. There is only one star showing in the upper left of the shield, the others covered by feathers and the talon holding it. The eagle has a rather fierce expression and the manner in which the shield and arrows ... moreare gripped is protective. The feathers are carefully detailed and incised. There is a hole drilled through them on both sides for mounting in addition to the eyes and wire. An old auction label is at the center top of the back. CONDITION: Much of the paint has weathered with a significant loss showing that it was displayed outside for many years. Perhaps on a boat. The original gilding on the entire eagle and much of the underlying gesso was lost over time and gold paint was later used that also had mostly worn away. The entire upper section was re gilded and glazed sometime ago. Fierce expression of protectionism grasping American shield& arrows HERITAGE: This type of carving was done by sailors. And craftsman such as Bellamy and were an expression of the patriotic feeling in the country during the mid 19th Century. The eagle in this form was frequently used as decoration on the transom of American sailing ships. The proportions of the relic and measurements are realistic. And the detailing is precise. It was discovered in Maine and mounted in an old sailor made fancy marlin work picture frame for display. Eagle head Relic framed: 14 3/4” L x 12 1/2” H x 1 3/4” D Weight 3 lbs 9 oz Eagle Head 7" L x 4" H x 3 1/4" D Presented is a carved wood. Very old, American eagle head with superbly incised detailing of its features. It dates back many years, and was assuredly done by a master carver who was active in the 1850's and specialized in ship carvings. The head curves sharply to the left, the viewer's right, which is indicative ... moreof eagles that were to be mounted as a stern board or on a plaque. The brow has the fierce look that is common to eagle heads of a patriotic nature. And the feathers are individually chiseled which is unique to this unnamed carver. Since eagle carvers rarely if ever signed their works, there is no way to attribute who might be the artist, except by matching the technique. As unique and stylized as it is, we have been unable to find a closer match then the stern board eagle in the Mallory Building at the Mystic Seaport. Both heads have the characteristic pose with the open vertically curved beak, extended tongue and fierce eyebrows. It is displayed high on the west wall of the Mallory Building. As displayed, it makes a fine example of American nautical folk art as does this eagle head relic. In smaller sizes. Patriotic wood carvings of American eagles were very popular in mid 19th Century New England homes, and these are the most numerous of the examples in today's market. With the beak still rough hewn but appealing in its primitive fashion. Back side of its head appears unfinished but does not show when hanging. Double Eagle Wall Hanging. 26" Tall X 23" Wide X 2.5" Deep. Weighs 6 lbs. Condition: The Crown has broken off and been re-glued on well. The claw on the right as your looking at it, is broken off and missing. The piece has 2 back cracks, of which 2 appear to be all the way through on the left side and 1 all the way though on the right side. I do not know the origin or history of this item. The detail looks good to me. Although I have not tried it, this appears to be a crossed swords display holder. The Plaque is made of 3 pieces of wood, apparently the middle block is their to raise the sword above the carving and the top piece is to squeeze down on the swords when you tighten the nuts on the back. I have not tried this and I do not know how hearty this is, so before you put your $1000 sword on this, please test it with a flat ... morepiece of metal of the same weight. It might only be for lightweight decorative swords or not even for swords at all. This is a fragile piece please allow for possible extra packing time needed.

Unfortunately, there is no signature on this piece, but it was no doubt carved by a true artist. The glass eyes are embeded and look quite real, with a shade difference in color. If you’re a collector of American folk art then you already know you’ve come across something special in this antique carved wooden Bellamy eagle! As Wikipedia reminds us. John Haley Bellamy(1836– 1914) was a folk artist of New England. USA, known for his highly stylized carved wooden eagles and other decorative items for ships and homes. Bellamy was born in Kittery, Maine in 1836, and stayed there for much of his career. Later in his life he lived and worked elsewhere in New England. Although carving was his primary means of supporting himself, he never considered himself to be an"artist, and he is not known to have signed any of his pieces. His eagles are highly desired in the collectors' market, with some selling in 2007 for over $100,000, and a large piece setting an artist-record price of $660,000 at an August 2005 auction. ... moreBellamy died in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1914. This eagle is hand-carved from three pieces of pine joined with glue and corrugated metal wafer-type staples(we're not sure if the staples are original or perhaps added later for reinforcement) Most likely carved in the early to mid 20 th century. The unknown artist was continuing a style of carving made famous by Bellamy. The eagle is depicted in mid-flight and clutching a banner or pennant in its talons. At the head of the pennant is a single carved star followed by stylized stripes. The pole. Finial, and star field are painted black with a gesso base, with the rest of the banner in red. Both are then painted over in gold. The eagle’s body is skillfully carved and painted gold with a gesso base. The back is painted a mustard yellow. From tail to the tip of the finial the carving measures 33.5” long. 17.25” tall, and a maximum of 2” in depth. The eagle is in good antique condition with wear in all the right places with some exposed gesso and wood grain. The reverse shows an older series of repairs and some age cracks. One of the rarest styles made by Artistic Carving Co. For sale is CARVED EAGLE CLOCK.In great condition and exquisitely carved.soo rare. Made by Don Park Studios in 1982 in Chambersburg. PA. Made from one piece of wood it measures 26" tall x 10" wide x 1 3/4" thick. The clock needs replaced as it doesn't keep accurate time. Should be an easy fix. A 4"x1 1/4" plaque has been removed so there is minor lightening of the wood and some sticky residue from the tape that held the plaque. Again an easy fix. Thanks for looking!
