Antique Vintage Folk Art Black Forest Carved Wood Old Man Woman Bookends Statue
Estate found.wonderful pair of early Black Forest carved bookends featuring an old man and woman. I love the expressions on their faces which are finely detailed. In very good condition with a lovely patina. There is a small toothpick sized hole at the corner of the mans mouth as if something may have been held there at one time? This is very hard to see as both sides of the mouth match perfectly and the small round hole blends in with the carved wrinkles around the mouth. Each measures approx. 8 1/4" tall x 4" x 4.5" A very charming example of old European folk art.

I'm guessing they're from the 1950s/ 1960s but the antiqued finish makes them appear to be much older and they could be older or newer. I've not been able to find a similar pair so I believe they're somewhat rare. Here I have an incredible pair of rare. Hand carved antique African Tribal bookends. Extremely detailed and both carved from the same single piece of a hard wood. The man carries a weapon, spear type and a knife in a holder around his waist. While the woman walks with a walking stick, but no weapons. Both have a dog to their side, the"viewing side" when used as bookends. Both the man and the woman carry a bag at the sides of their waist and a basket on their backs. VERY highly detailed, just gorgeous, the smooth areas are rubbed very smooth, to a lovely soft shine. This wonderful pair of Wooden Pigs are made of a beautiful hard wood. I am not sure if they are book ends or not. They have flat backs but not bottoms so they don't stand flat. They are round and have chubby bellies. SOOOO CUTE! They stand about 8.5 inches tall and have a base of approx 6 inches. They weigh nearly 2 lbs each. I have no information of age. Origin, or exact wood. They are from an Estate and I would guess them to be quite old. They have a tiny bit of nicks here and there but have NO serious faults, defects, or problems. These are quite heavy pieces and have very detailed workmanship. The teeth and tongues are remarkable. The eyes are glass or beads. the paint on the tongue and claws is still vibrant. There is great detail in the fur around the neck and chin. The ears and noses are not broken. The bears are dusty but I didn't want to clean them for fear of ruining the patina. The classic edges of the wood shout old world Black Forest. The dovetailed joints are fantastic. The screws used to hold the bear in place from the bottom are slotted screws as opposed to Phillips head. Approximately: one weighs 1 pound 3.5 ounces.
