Rare Vintage or Antique French Wood Carving "Fisherman"
Offered for sale is this rare finely carved French wood carving The Fisherman. The carving has a label Made in France on the bottom. It was made around 1920's or earlier. The fisherman is smoking a pipe. He is wearing a turtleneck sweater and a jacket, you can see the knitting of this sweater. His right hand is hold a sack on his shoulder and his left hand is holding a fish net. The wood is very heavy and showing the age. The piece is hand painted but the painting material has some sort of problem, it has a lot of tiny dots. It is some sort of chemical change and not the mildew. Except the little dots the carving has no damage. Overall it is in excellent condition. You can easily find German or Italian carved wood figures, but it is hard to find an exquisite French wood carved figure like this. This cute Black Forest carved Scottie has a mission: he is telling the date. The old fashioned perpetual calendar. In French is just a touch that will make you smile every time you sit at your desk. It will also teach you a bit of French at the same time! The Scotttie is in very good vintage condition, with some dust, but no breaks or chips that I have noticed. Wonderful carved wood whirlygig figure. Looks to be a French Army officer- possibly General De Gaulle. Former World War II hero& President of France. Measures 8" tall. This item was acquired by my friends mother in France sometime in the 1950s. It would have originally had glass eyes embedded in it. It appears that the eyes were stolen at some point giving him a semi creepy"Oedipus Rex" look. This is a partial statue artifact that includes the head and shoulders and the beginning of the wings. It measures approx. 12" diagonally, the head is about 6" long& 5" wide. There is a mounting whole on the back that it was hung from and you can see some wormholes in the wood, minor paint loss and patina, minor cracks& such. Please feel free to ask me any questions. Nice antique French Napoleon era hand carved wood figure. This wooden figure is 13 inches tall and is mounted afixed to a wooden base from the same priod. Lots of wear on the paint on the figure but nothing affecting its cosmetic value and in condition to display in any home or office. No doubt this figure has been played with in through its time but still in great cosmetic condition for an item for its period. You will not be dissapointed with this condition of this item. ANTIQUE FRENCH ARTICULATED WOOD ARTIST'S MODEL "LAY FIGURE"
Antique Articulated Wood Artist's Model- otherwise known as a"lay figure" is likely the most unusual collector's item we have offered! He measures 27' long and is made of pine. All joints function and are undamaged but for one: because he was carved sometime between 1840 and 1890. The torso is cracked in back at the base due to shrinkage of the wood. When originally made, the torso was round, becoming more oval-shaped as the wood aged, thus the crack formed. Though unnecessary for display, the area could be fortified(probably"biscuited" together) by an expert wood worker. We were delighted to come across this charming wooden figure at all- they are rarely found- but imagine, upon further inspection, that he is entirely as originally carved, with fingers and toes unchipped! In addition, the patina of the wood ... moreglows with obvious age and care. Because most of these artist's models were French, we have given ours the name"Gaston du Bois" during his tenure at our house. But we see in his far-away gaze that perhaps he yearns to see more of the world. so we are offering him, and you, the bidder, the chance to meet. The shipping for this clock is for continental US. Does not include Alaska or Hawaii. This is beautiful unusual rather large wooden French/Italian King marionette. I'm listing this as a marionette, after doing a little research, that seems to be what it is. This isn't my area of expertise, so I will give you as much info as I can. I bought this piece at an antique auction when I was very young and fell in love with it. The face has great detail, lots of chippy paint, the head comes off, looks like it's missing a pin, but if it's just sitting it will stay in place. The arms are attached with pins as well, and can easily come out. I don't know the age of the piece but does have some. I bought it at least 25 years ago. This is a very fine antique pair of mid-19 th century. Probably French Gothic Revival dragons, facing left and right– we acquired them this summer quite locally in the Limousin, in rural central France. Both were visibly conjoined to a piece of furniture(or interior architectural element) at one time, at the rise of the neck and base of the tail. As a result, there are rough spots on the nape of the necks and the flaring tails, but they are otherwise largely intact. The detail of carving& the quality of the three-dimensional aspect of these dragons is very high, with the spiral at the base of the wings reflecting their architectural nature. Both are full-bodied, with clearly identifiable scales: there is a strong sculptural aspect, ideal for piecing into a wooden framework or design, or simply appreciating them as they are. As to what they came from is a bit of a puzzlement– they are in pine. The figural angel or lady with scroll may be made of another kind of wood. It is a very dark brown and I cant really tell. They were originally decorations on a large hunting style French cabinet. They are straight and solid with beautiful hand carving in solid oak. One of the lions has some old. Inactive woodworm damage and a gap where the oak was laminated together. However, the crack is not all the way through and the piece is stable and solid.
