Damage/Repair, wear. Scratches, stains, Additional Information: An exceptional mask with an abstract face recognized by two square eyes and three abstract snake heads on the top. At the back there is the remain of the costume attached to the mask. The representaion of three snakes on top of Dogon masks is unusual. The most popular Dogon masks with high superstructure quite similar to this one are known as Sirige or ammat. Superstructures are always related to number of the spirits celebrated during the Dama masquerade. This one recalls the sepent. One of the most important mythical beings rarely represented on masks. This object is one of the rare examples of its kind. The mask seems old and shows evidence of long use and much handling. The offered mask would add a unique piece in any collection. Living along the Bandiagara escarpment in Mali the Dogon are well known for their spectacular and dramatic funerary rituals and the various masks that appear during ceremonies. He is made of ironwood and you can see the brown grain through the dark stain on many parts of the sculpture. He is a little over 20" tall. There is a small area of the rope detail that is missing. Here I have an incredible pair of rare. Hand carved antique African Tribal bookends. Extremely detailed and both carved from the same single piece of a hard wood. The man carries a weapon, spear type and a knife in a holder around his waist. While the woman walks with a walking stick, but no weapons. Both have a dog to their side, the"viewing side" when used as bookends. Both the man and the woman carry a bag at the sides of their waist and a basket on their backs. Antique Carved Folk Art Figure of an African American Stump Speaker 18th-19th C.
This is an unusual and quite insulting carved figure of an African American gentleman. He is dressed in 18th or early 19th century costume. With knee breeches, fancy waistcoat, and long coat. He is standing on what appears to be a tree stump, which makes me feel he is a caricture of an black politician or preacher. He stands 4 1/4 inches high and is carved from a single piece of wood. On the base are two sets of inscriptions. One set is initials in pencil and the second is a series of numbers in ink, which look like museum accession numbers.

Here is a pair of vintage or antique hand carved wood elephant figurines. Each is made from a different type of wood. The larger one is made from a heavier denser wood and I think is older. It has inset eyes. But the tusks have been removed. It stands about 4 7/8" tall. The coloring and details on this piece is really nice. The smaller is a lighter wood and a more simple carving. Antique? Large African? Asian? American? hand carved wood conga drum skin top
Not sure of age. But appears very old. Large hand carved wood drum with animal skin top. Great looking piece with alot of detail in carving. Drum itself is in solid condition with only a few light scuffs and nicks around. Ropes holding drum cover are loose, as is the animal skin cover. I see one hole in the cover, so not sure if it would play with the ropes tightened. Tough too tell origin, but perhaps someone could shed some light on this piece for me. Measures 33 3/4 inches long, 5 1/2 inches wide at the base, 11 1/2 inches wide at the top. Measurements are a little off considering the drum is not a round, being carved out of a log. Gorgeous hand carved very dark color wood not sure what type of wood but its very heavy. Approx size is10 x 6 x 6 appears to be a younger African boy/ man. Wood shows signs of cracking as seen in pictures. Looks like a possible repair was done on top of boys head or maybe just some type of glue was put in crack to prevent further splitting. Not sure. THESE ARE A VERY WELL CARVED ANTIQUE AFRICAN BUSTS.THEY ARE IN VERY NICE SHAPE AND WELL PRESERVED.THE WOOD IS PRETTY HEAVY FOR THEIR SIZE AND HAVE A VERY NICE RICH WARM PATINA THAT ONLY COMES WITH AGE.THEY ARE 9' TALL AND 3 1/4' WIDE AND 2 1/2' THICK.THERE IS A PLACE TO HANG AT THE TOP AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICS.THESE ARE BOTH IN GREAT SHAPE AND READY TO BE HUNG.FREE SHIPPING IN THE U.S. THANKS!
