The shaft is roundish, , but out of round due to age expansion and contraction. Much of the marks left by the stone carving process remain. The head is intentionally and robustly out of round, elliptical, most near in form to an oval. There are no condition issues.

EARLY 19th CENTURY SPANISH COLONIAL CARVED WOOD AND POLYCHROME SANTO
Superb colonial santo. Mexican school, early 19th century. This is a Virgin of Guadalupe. Standing on a sliver of moon supported by an angel atop a carved and painted pedestal. She measures 29 inches high, 11 inches wide and 7.5 inches deep. Her condition is very good for her age. A few of the spines around her are missing and there is some age-related weathering to the colors of her raiment, but the piece has been restored and waxed by an expert to preserve it. This santo is authentic. It was bought by an experienced collector and restorer in Mexico in the early 1970s. I inherited it. INCREDIBLE 19TH CENTURY BLACK FOREST PIPE HOLDER W FIVE CARVED ANIMAL HEADS
This auction is for a amazing piece of 19th century Black Forest carving. This is a pipe holder with five exquisitely carved animal heads. Each head is so detailed and beautifully colored. Each has glass eyes and not the same eyes. But an eye to fit it's personality. There are two bears a fox and what I think are 2 wild cats. They could be a different kind of bear but they look very cat like to me. They are fitted on a black ebonized wood rack with four holes for pipes. The pictures do not do this carving justice as the camera does not translate their amazing presence. The detail from their tongues to teeth to the fur to the very expressive eyes melt your heart. This is the very best Black Forest carving I have seen. The animal heads are in great condition with the exception of one cat tongue which has a chipped end and a tiny flea bite ... moreon a bear tongue. The back rack piece has a old and very well done repair as shown in the last picture. It is so tightly repaired I would venture to say it is stronger than when it was new. I bought this at auction. on the bottom there is a piece of masking tape stating that this is St. Ignasius Loyola 1491- 1556 found of the society of Jesus(the Jesuits) I do not know how a prior owner knows that. The condithion is great for it's age. He has good facial features. He is missing his hands. There is finish loss in many places. He has a chip out of his collar in the front. Here is a very old Catholic religious saint carved wood figure. I don't recognize the saint off hand. I believe this is a late 18th early 19th century carving. European in origin and more than likely French. I believe the base on this statue is newer than the carving itself. He has very nice patina and wear polish from great age, his backside has a little wear from exposure, but still looks ok. His fingers on his staff hand are also broken, but doesn't stand out real bad. His overall height is approx. 10" Really nice piece, fresh out of an estate.

Up for auction is a stunning antique wood statue. It is of the Lion of Lucerne. It is a really well done piece. The detail and patina to the wood is just amazing. It measures 5" wide x 2 1/4" deep x 2" tall. The shield needs to be reattached. It is in otherwise very nice condition. The wonderful bear on the back rest is a master work of black forest carving and is fully carved on both the front and back of the back rest. This stunning chair stands 28 1/2" tall and the seat is 12 3/4" high x 13" wide x 11 1/4" deep. Both the back rest and seat have mortise and tenon construction. There are some condition issues and repairs that can be restored if you choose. There are three L brackets at three inside corners of the seat rails. 19th Century ,Carved gilt and Gesso Wooden Cherub Head with Wings
This very well carved.Probably Italian, gilt wood and gesso puti, was purchased at an estate sale many decades ago by my wife. We have cherished it,but we are moving and must let go of a lot of our treasures. She is 8 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" tall x 4 1/2" deep. I should mention that my wife applied paint to a few areas where the gilding had flaked off.

Large 19th Century Carved and Gilded French Cherub
This lovely carved and gilded Cherub was purchased from an antique dealer in Paris over fifty years ago. The carving is stunning and the scale is perfect. It measures approximately 14 by 14 inches. Items such as this are getting harder and harder to come by. It most likely spent most of its life on a church altar.
