Vintage 24" Sterling Silver CREED Rosary This rare 24" rosary has an 2 1/4" by 1 1/2" ornate crucifix. The Connector has Jesus and the sacret heart on one side and the mother Mary on the other. Each bead which may be Venetian glass( I'm not sure about this) is wrapped in an ornate silver wire wrap. The beads in the photo appear to have a blue tint but infact are white. GENUINE EXTREMELY RARE CATHOLIC CHAPLAIN'S STERLING SILVER ROSARY. This is the real thing. Folks, and hardly ever found. During the First World War. The War Department issued brass silver washed rosaries to any Catholic soldier who requested one. Likewise, if a Catholic Chaplain requested a special sterling silver version of the enlisted style rosary, the Priest was given one. Because there were far fewer Chaplains than enlisted men, and given the fact that not all requested the silver rosary, there were far fewer of these special ones from the beginning. Over time. The Chaplains who possessed the silver rosaries often gave them away to soldiers under extraordinary circumstances, when giving one of the regular ones wasn't feasible. Some were lost, others confiscated by enemy captors; the already rare silver ball chain rosaries became ... moreever scarcer. Today it is nearly impossible to find one of these Sterling Silver ball chain rosaries. Many collectors know about them but have never seen one. luckier collectors might see or possess only one. The rosary featured in this auction was found in the pocket of an old uniform which. According to an expert who researched it for me, is a WW I Army Officer Infantry Jacket. And was most likely worn by the actual chaplain who used the rosary. It lay undisturbed in the moth eaten garment until discovered last year by a man who bought the uniform at a gun show. These are scarce. Hardly ever found and opportunities seldom come up to obtain one. The last one I sold went quickly. The pouch isn't an original issue, but evidently was used by the Chaplain who used the rosary. Chaplains in ww1 gave out regular silver washed brass rosaries to Catholic soldiers who requested them. The Priests themselves. Had the choice of having for themselves the identical rosary, except the center and crucifix were made from sterling silver. Other than the stampings on the respective parts, there was no way to tell the clerical and regular rosaries apart. Often the chaplains gave out their personal rosary in extraordinary circumstances of war and many rosaries were no doubt captured by the enemy. I'm not positive what the beads are made of-they are smooth, unfaceted, and are not cold to the touch so I don't know if they're some kind of plastic or lucite? or something else. Each bead measures more than 1/4" long. There's a little link that's different than the rest on the chain near the cross as you can clearly see in my photos-you're getting this item exactly as I did. I'm not Catholic so I don't know what significance, if any, this has. I know nothing about the history, origin, or exact age. Gorgeous VTG Estate Fluted Sterling Bead& Center Rosary Original Patina Intact Description Gorgeous vintage estate fluted sterling bead and center rosary. It also has a few smooth round sterling beads as well. It measures 20 3/4" end to end when laid flat and all beads are accounted for.The original cross appears to have been replaced with one that is slightly newer but still vintage. The center is marked Sterling and appears to be original to the piece. The added cross is also stamped Sterling but pulls to a magnet so I'm guessing it's plated or incorrectly marked. The beads and center however are definitely real sterling and have a lovely patina which gives it a little extra charm. The beads are amethyst purple color faceted crystals measuring approximately 5 mm in diameter each. All the metal in the rosary is Sterling Silver and the crucifix is signed STERLING along with a maker hallmark C&HCO. The crucifix measures approximately 1 3/4 inches in length. Approximately just shy of 25" long. Pink multi-cut beads, a couple with caps, two medallions first one of Mary marked sterling on back, the other I believe is St. Benedict, the cross is marked sterling on the back. The rosary is heavy and well made. I got this from a California estate and the older women said it was her mothers rosary. It is in very good used condition, Jesus feet have come off the cross and the cross has a slight bow(I think someone could straighten it easily) All beads are in excellent condition. The item has all 59 beads. Weighs 43.2 grams and is 29 inches around. The cross is 2 inches tall and 1.25 inches across. VERY nice. The cross is stamped sterling and also says Italy and ROMA on the back. The medal joining the 2 strands is marked sterling. One side is Mary and other side is Jesus. The Our Father beads have the end caps on each bead. Very good condition but the medal and the crucifix do need polished but will leave that up to the purchaser.
