PIERRE MARIE FRANÇOIS DE(1748-1793) Pierre Marie François de Pagès, French naval officer, world traveler, and writer, was born of a noble family in Toulouse in 1748. Following the settlement of the Seven Years' War and the relaxed French-Spanish rivalry in North America, Pagès crossed Texas on the first lap of a journey around the world. Leaving his naval vessel at Santo Domingo on June 30, 1767, he sailed to New Orleans, traveled by the Mississippi and Red rivers to Natchitoches, then across Texas and into Mexico by way of the Old San Antonio Road.qv He returned to France by way of the Far East and then wrote an account of his adventure. The English translation of his book, Travels Round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771(1791) is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in an English-language book. Pagès later became a captain in the French navy, received the Croix de St. Louis, and became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences. He accompanied an expedition toward the South Pole in 1773-74 and one toward the North Pole in 1776. After fighting with the French navy in the American Revolution, he retired to a plantation in what is now Haiti, where he was killed in a slave uprising in 1793. The first voyage is described in vol. I; it took the author from France to New Orleans. Through the South, the Midwest and the West of North America, and on to Mexico, the Marianas, the Philippines, India and Persia. From there he went to Syria, Lebanon and the Holy Land and from Acre back to France. Volume II relates his voyage to the South Polar regions in 1773 and 1774, and his voyage towards the North Pole in 1776. For bid is an original circa 1694 PALESTINE/ Holy Land MAP. Hand-colored by German Cartographer& Map maker Philipp Clüver(1580-1622) This wonderful, framed ma is titled, Totius Terrae Sanctae Delineatio. The cartouche is small and not fancy. The map shows the lands of Palestine along the Mediterranean Sea“Mediterraneum. This is a 17 th Century map with very nice details done in Latin. Several states colored with green and pink colors. Etc. This map was engraved by Martin Hailler(1640-1678) the noted 17 th Century printmaker. His name“M.Hailler” appears printed in the lower right area of the map along the margin over the edge grid. This map appears in a fancy frame. The map itself measures 10 inches by just over 8 inches wide. The frame measures just over 14 3/4 inches tall by about 13 inches wide. I have never had the map out of ... morethe frame. There is a vertical fold line down the right area of the right of the number 66 at the top grid. It doesn’t detract too much.
