Israel or the Holy Land in Biblical times. Centered on the Jordan River, the map covers the regions between modern day Israel and Lebanon along with parts of Jordan and Syria. An inset in the lower right quadrant features the plan of Ancient Jerusalem. Depicts the ancient walled city in detail, noting many ancient sites, including the Temple of Kings, the Tower of Psephinus, the site of the Temple in Moriah, Tower of Antonia and the Hill of Evil Council(the legendary house of Caiaphas, where Judas is said to have plotted the betrayal of Jesus) ... moreamong others. Throughout the map names important towns and cities, cities with ancient and contemporary place names. The map is color coded with relief shown by hachures. Cruchley's General Atlas was unique for its period, employing a vivid color scheme extending even to the oceans, distinctive typography, and various uncommon decorative elements including a peacock feather crown and an imprint medallion, both of which break the printed border. Though many of the maps in this atlas are copyrighted in 1842, the atlas was first published in 1843 from the Cruchley office at 81 Fleet Street, London, and proving popular went through numerous reissues well into the 1850s. 1574 Ruscelli/Ziletti Map- Soria et Terra Santa Nuova Tavola Claudius Ptolemy. An Alexandrine Greek, is probably the greatest of all early geographers. Working out of Alexandria in the first century AD he wrote a geography that was only published in Europe in the mid 1400's. His work provided the first real printed maps and he was held in such high regard that few attempted to correct these thousand plus year old descriptions until the mid 1500's. This map comes from Ruscelli's'Ptolemaeus La Geografia' which published new(Tabula Nova) maps along with Ptolemy's originals. This map is from the 1574 edition of the atlas. Published in Venice by G. Ziletti. This is the'new' map updating Ptolemy's original measurements. An attractive general map. Published in the quarto edition of Edward Stanford’s‘London Atlas of Universal Geography’ Printed on a single page the sheet measures approx 30cm x 37cm. Very good condition. The printed area is clean and fresh. Margins have some minor handling soiling. A few specks and are a little darkened towards the edges. Left edge a little creased where originally bound. Verso blank and clean. I’ll post it rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. This map shows the biblical Holy Land of Canaan in today's Israel bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Syria with Damascus, the Sea of Galilee, the river Jordan and the Dead Sea. The cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, Beth Araba, Dobraath, Gilead and Magdala can be spotted. The map is decorated with a beautiful title cartouche with biblical scenes(crucifixion at Golgatha and adoration of the Magi) the resurrected Jesu Christ and Roman soldiers. Verso a Dutch text is given. This is a plate from the Royal Visscher Bible as published in 1648. This bible was a collection that showed all the major events from the old and new testament. The double folio plates(50 by 40 cm) were assembled by Visscher who bought the old existing copperplates from other publishers and added his own plates to fill in the several lacks.
