Description: This is a fine example of Christian van Adrichem's rare 1590 map of the lands granted to the Tribe of Simeon at the time of Joshua's division of the Twelve Tribes. Oriented to the East and identifies the lands of the Philistines as well as timber lands rich in Cedar. The Tribe of Simeon occupied the region southwest of Canaan and was bounded by the lands granted to the Tribes of Dan and Judah. Numerous Biblical sites are noted throughout. This map is the tenth of ten maps of the Holy Land prepared by Christian van Adrichem for publication in his Theatrum Terrae Sanctae. Adrichem's maps for the Theatrum were prepared between 1580 and 1585. But were published posthumously by his associate, Gerardis Brunius of Koln, in 1590. The publication went through several later editions and served as a basis for most subsequent maps of the Holy Land well into the 18th century. The English translation of his book, Travels Round the World, in the Years 1767, 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771(1791) is perhaps the oldest description of Texas in an English-language book. Pagès later became a captain in the French navy, received the Croix de St. Louis, and became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences. He accompanied an expedition toward the South Pole in 1773-74 and one toward the North Pole in 1776. After fighting with the French navy in the American Revolution, he retired to a plantation in what is now Haiti, where he was killed in a slave uprising in 1793. The first voyage is described in vol. I; it took the author from France to New Orleans. Through the South, the Midwest and the West of North America, and on to Mexico, the Marianas, the Philippines, India and Persia. From there he went to Syria, Lebanon and the Holy Land and from Acre back to France. I have here for sale a rare map by Hornius and Jansson of the Holy Land. Originally composed of six sheets. This is just one sheet covering Tribus Simeon et pars Meridionalis Tribus Dan et orientalis Tribus Iuda. An extraordinarily rare map. This is the 1662 Johannes Jansson and Georgius Hornius six part map of the Holy Land. Divided into six panels and oriented to the east, this map covers Israel or the Holy Land from the southern tip of the Dead Sea and Edom to the Golan Heights and modern day Lebanon. This map is an expansion and enlargement of a smaller plan of the same general area issued by Christian van Adricham around 1590. Jansson expanded and embellished Adricham's map in order to illustrate the text composed by Georgius Hornius(George Horn) for volume six of his Novus Atlas, Accuratissimia Orbis Antiqui Delineatio. As a whole this map is embellished with countless vignettes and other images drawn from Biblical tradition. Antique Victorian Milton Bradley Map of Palestine Holy Land Puzzle Box Rare
Up for auction is a Dissected Map of Palestine and the Holy Land. It was made by the Milton Bradley& Company in Springfield Massachusetts. It is in good antique condition. The box has some wear on the corners. The map is complete with no missing pieces. It does have some light discoloration and age spots on the pieces. It is a bit of a challenge to put the puzzle together however. Someone has pencilled numbers on the corners of the edge pieces.which makes it easier. On the corners of the box cover it says"Sunday school series number one" Perhaps it was a puzzle that was used in a religious school or Sunday school. Measures: 6 1/4 inches by 5 inches. 1618 Bertius Map- Tabula Cananae Petrus Bertius was a professor of mathematics and librarian at Leyden University in Holland but is known for his miniature world atlas'Tabularum geographicarum contractarum' which contained two different sets of maps. This map comes from the more famous and more decorative set of Jodocus Hondius Junior. Described by Geoffrey King in"Miniature Antique Maps" as the"finest set of miniature maps ever printed" It is from the 1618 French text edition. This is a nice large map, measuring approximately 16-1/2 inches by 13 inches, and it shows the entire area of Palestine, from Galilee down to Judea. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of details in this map- towns and villages. Lakes and rivers, mountains and roads. The entire land of Palestine is beautifully hand-colored, its various regions distinguished by different pastel shades of color. Surrounding Palestine, left uncolored to distinguish the boundaries, but also in great detail, are the lands of Idumea(or Edom) Bashan, Coele Syria, etc. This map is filled with historic areas. Both ... moreexotic and familiar: Zebulon, Land of the Philistines, Samaria, Asher, Issachar, Gad, Manasseh, Idumea, Henicia, Ammon, Judah, Simeon, Naphtali, Reuben, Ephraim, the Mountains of Moab, the Dead Sea, and many.
