For sale we have this lovely antique folding Japanese parasol with beautifully carved natural handle. The super piece dates to around 1880. The piece folds in the centre and is secured by a brass section which slides in to pl ace. The handle in made of a natural material and has carved hand and flower decoration. The canopy is made of silk. The canopy measures 48cm/19" acr oss, the total length of the piece is 61 cm/ 24" and the handle measures 28cm/11" The condition of the frame and handle is very good but it is an antique so shows signs of u se. GENUINE ANTIQUE CARVED JAPANESE NETSUKE OKIMONO SHISHI LION DOG INLAID EYES NR
This genuine antique carved Japanese Meiji period Shishi Lion- dog stands 36mm(1.5' high x 32mm(1.25' across the base at its widest and weighs 33 grams. It is well carved in a traditional pose with inlaid eyes with some wear to the black detail and tight stress cracks typically associated with this type of material. It does have a mark of two concentric circles to the base and there is one hole which extends through the front paws for use as a toggle or netsuke. This is a very finely carved and signed antique Japanese brush rest in the shape of a book. It measures 3 1/2" 9cm) wide and is 3 1/4" 8.3cm) from top of page to the bottom carved from natural material with grain and has some yellowing from age. It is in very good condition and is believed may date from the Meiji period. It's a little dirty in places but I haven't attempted to clean it but will leave to the successful bidder. I am selling this on behalf of a friend whose family it is believed to have been in since the 1920's 30's having been purchased by a family member visiting Japan during that time but is thought not to have been new then so is probably a lot older. Antique Japanese Page Turner Lacquer & Carved Wood
Antique Japanese page turner. Probably Meiji period. It is carved wood on one side and black lacquer on the other. It has a shaped handle with two holes through which a cord would have been threaded. The carved side has a charming scene depicting a man holding aloft what looks like a musical instrument or it could be a fan. Hovering above him is a bat so he may trying to ward this off. The reverse side features flowers. A straw roofed building by water and a prunus(I'm guessing) tree. It measures 14 ins/26 cms long. It is generally in good condition with a few surface marks. Great Carved Chinese or Japanese Root "Scholar" Figure, 19th Century!
I think this is a great carving. Depicting a scholar figure, carved from a root piece of wood, created in either China or Japan, in the very late 19th century. Figure has a wonderful patina, but has a bunch of chips(corner of headdress) cracks, and losses(fingers and others) though it still looks great- and is definitely worthy of restoration. You can see some holes on his back, probably indicating he had something mounted there originally(maybe a bed roll or backpack type of item) Carving is very well done, the figure was mounted on a later, wooden base to be part of a lamp c. 1950, lamp pole has now been removed and the statue is not attached to the base, it merely sits on it.
