Ancient Indus Valley LARGE CULT CUP ,3200-2500 BC. 17.5cm ht, Intact,VERY RARE
Beautiful large Ancient Indus Valley Terracotta CULT CUP. Dating to the earlier part of the civilisation, and I have to say I still don't know exactly what it was used for,I can only guess it may have been for floral decoration or a type of incense burner,it may even have been used to stick the fishes head into the hole for drying? If anybody has seen the recent Mesopotamian exhibition travelling the world, not long ago at the Melbourne Museum, there was a large pottery flower consisting of flower heads and stems all ceramic which could easily have sat in this type of thing, and it may well be part of an artificial floral arrangement. 11 cm diameter x 17.5 cm high. From the earlier end of the ancient Indus Valley civilisation around 3200-2500 B.C. A very rare shaped artefact to say the least, probable over painting. Indus Valley was only ... morediscovered for the west in 1921 and excavations didn't begin till 1926 and never on the scale of ancient Egypt even though they existed at the same point in time, only a few thousand kilometres apart. Indus have been found to have been the earliest users of polychrome paints.surpassing the Mesopotamians who were thought to be the earliest, they have now been found to be the earliest practitioners of dentistry, were advanced in town planning, sewerage and water.Well worth doing an internet search for more information.
