Antique Papier Mache Dish Hand Painted And Gilt Persia India Birds Flowers
Up for sale here is an exquisite and unusual small antique papier mache dish with a lid. It looks to have some age and to originate from Persia or India; however I am not an expert on these pieces in any way and I am hoping that those of you bidding will know more than I will. It's very hard to date it. But it features a delicate design of kingfishers amongst flowers and leaves. It looks to have been hand painted and there are traces of gold, so originally it must have been gilded and lacquered but it has a delicate shell like finish, not polished or shiny. The base is an aged mustard colour and the design has hues of blue, green, and a samll amount of red. The lid has a small wooden handle with a hole in the top; whether it once has another piece on top I don't know. There's a black design on the lid, and four patches of blue, ... morean unusual blue. Maybe it's cobalt or lapis, but as I say, I have very little knowledge of these items, though I much admire their beauty. There is some damage on the inside. But the lid still fits well, and has a small indentation for that purpose. The inside is dusty and I have made no attempt to clean this. The dish is generally in good condition. But does have some wear, as would be expected with older pieces, but it's still very lovely. I don't know what it would have been used for. It measures approximately 10 cm or 4 inches in diameter and 6 cm or 2.25 inches in depth including the lid. Please note that the postage prices I have quoted are correct to the best of my knowledge. But should I be mistaken, I'll refund the difference. We do need to cover costs but don't make money on postage. A rare find. Bidding for this starts at £9.99 with no reserve.
