WONDERFUL ANTIQUE RECLINING BUDDHA STATUE Very handsome piece. And quite heavy. We just purchased this impressive statue from an out of the way antiques shop in Nepal. Due to the weight and terra cotta composition, we are a bit reluctant to sell it as there are many stories of buddha statues of this age and material being mere coverings for treasures contained within. In Thailand, the Golden Buddha and the Emerald Buddha were both discovered under such outer coverings. But, we do not want to smash this open, so it is for sale as we found it. Probably just a lovely old Buddha statue anyway. Which indeed it is, and reflects a serene character. Composed, as we said, of a terra cotta, but feels heavier than it should be, with a rich, dark patina which retains traces of gilding. The underside is wrapped in stiff old red cloth, which when tapped, ... moresounds hollow. The robes of the Buddha drape elegantly about him and his posture is one of complete relaxation. The tranquil statue measures approximately 8" long and is in excellent antique condition. A splendid Reclining Buddha, and an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of Asian antiques.
