The little strap handles are decorated in dreamy green glazes and there is Kanji calligraphy on the side. The cover adorns a stem. Which has a slight bend in it as a lid finial and lid remover. The cover is signed as shown. There is very fine crazing to the pottery and it is in perfect condition. This pottery is named after Tea Master. This handsome 12 1/8” tall x 5 ½” wide vase has a 4 5/8” top and 3 5/8” diameter foot. It has a traditional baluster form with high relief applied details of a bird and tree with hand chased details and dates from the late 1800s. The surface has been polished with scant traces of old patina in the details and there are bends in the top rim as well as dents in the foot. I can find no maker’s marks. Bold colors and shades of green, red, blue, yellow, orange, plus black writing that is different on each side. States Made in Japan on bottom. Measures 4 1/2" tall, 4 3/4" wide at base, 6 3/4" across top opening, 9 1/2" from handle to handle. Notice the beautiful design of the handles. ANTIQUE KATCHUSHI JAPANESE SWORD TSUBA--NOT A CHINESE REPRO
I am offering a Momoyama/Edo period(approx. 1600’s) Japanese tsuba with a slightly raised rim. I estimate that the guard belongs to the Katchushi(armorer) school of tsuba makers. The tsuba measures 3 and 1/4 inches high. 3 inches wide and is about 2 mm thick. The openwork design is of some kind of flower blossom. The hitsu-ana(opening for the sword implements) is of an older style. The slightly raised rim is well done and shows the skill of the maker of this guard. The plate shows a very nice hammered pattern and there are some silver and copper inserts on the two surfaces(four on each side) The guard shows a nice dark patina and is in excellent condition with no rust. Antique Japanese TETSUBIN Cast Iron Hobnail Tea Kettle Urushi Top Chagama Footed Aloha A TESTSUBIN is a cast iron tea kettle having a pouring spout and a handle across the top which is used for boiling water to make tea. This tetsubin was purchased at an estate sale of a collector of Japanese antiques and one who collected many testsubin. The design of this tetsubin is a finely made hobnail design. It comes with a red urushi lacqured cover. There was a sales receipt inside this tetsubin from the Nikko Kanaya Hotel and it has a phone number with only 4 digits. This would indicate that it was probably purchased around the 1940s. The receipt is somewhat hard to read but I was able to read"Edo period over 100 years old" It is in quite good condition for its age. There is some rust on the inside which is common for a tea pot that has ... morebeen used. It stands on 3 feet and is 4" high from the cover and 8" high from the handle. It is 20" Upon further research I have found that these testubin with a laquered top were used to warm up sake. They put the sake bottle into the warm water in the testsubin to warm it up. Traditional Samurai on Horse Doll c1930 Samurai has gofun head. Wood hands and feet, kabuto helmet Horse is 22cm tall. Made of wood composite, paper and resin This gorgeous horse and rider is typical of the Boy's Day display in the early 1900s. His head is gofun with glass inset eyes. The head is made on a long spike that is pushed in to the bundled straw body. The horse is made with a very realistic quality. It is in fair condition as there are many signs of wear e.g. missing tail on horse. Part of saddle blanket is gone. Antique Japanese Kagami 24.cm long. 16.4cm diameter mirror face Signed on side FUJIWARA CHIKASHIGE This beautiful old mirror was made by Fuijiwara Chikashige. It is made of bronze and has a relief picture of cranes. Turtles, pine tree and bamboo, along with the maker's signature on side. It is dated from the Edo period c.1750- 1850. Antique Japanese Kamishimo Hina Doll Gofun porcelain head with glass inset eyes 13cm tall Meiji Period 1800s This style of doll is described in Daruma 26 Magazine(2 inserts shown) I currently have a copy of this for sale. This rare doll is a kamishimo hina doll. It has a gofun head with glass inset eyes. The head is made on a long wooden spike(longer than later period dolls) that is pushed in to a bundled straw body. It has human hair. Carved wooden hands and clothing made of paper and rough woven cloth. The base is wood. Kamishimo hina dolls from the 1800s are named after the formal dress of the samurai. With the divided skirt(hakama) and coarse sleeveless coat worn over a kimono. Antique Japanese Boys' Day Samuri doll with red face. Hand made authentic costume of brocade and dyed leather with metal and hand stitched decoration. Hands are made of glazed earthenware. Sword is metal and has a decorated handle. Hair feels to be human and I think the hat is painted and decorated paper. Stand is made of wood. Dates between 1880- 1900. Size: 28cms high. Condition: There is some damage to the hands. Hat has come loose from the head and stand has knocks to it. Costume, especially brocade, is very dirty. Along with Yoshiiku there were hard times until the release of his most famous and most sought after series the 100 Aspects of the Moon was released and this series about beautiful women and ghosts is still thought to be one of the truly great woodblock print series ever created. Unfortunately his great creative ability and talent had a dark side as he suffered for depression and mental illness and he died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of only 53. Awesome Japanese Chinese Antique Export Silver Iris Bowl
For auction is this absolutely stunning antique Meiji period Japanese silver bowl. The interior is circular whilst the outside is hexagonal with gorgeous embossed irises and bulrushes in the art nouveau style. Magnificently crafted. The design flows effortlessly around the bowl taking your eye with it. Please look at all the pictures as they form an important part of the description. This bowl is double-walled. I love the contrast between the outer hexagon and the beautifully smooth circular interior. This is in very good condition for its age with only minor age related wear. There are a some solder spots on some of the petals and leaves. There is also a small dink to one side of a bulrush leaf. I have noticed after looking at the photos in close-up that there is polish residue around some of the petals. Easily removed. Simply a stunning ... morepiece of Japanese export silver and one that would grace any collection. The bowl weighs 151 grams and measures 11cm in diameter. It stands approx. 5.5cm tall on a footed base. There are two marks to the base one of which I am reliably informed says"pure silver" Unfortunately the other mark was hard to capture on film and my source thought it might be"old" Japanese or just hard to read- so maybe someone out there recognises the craftsmanship and can possibly help me. Antique Large Old Japanese Geisha musical doll Deco era
Antique Geisha doll. Deco period or earlier. Early 1900's. The doll does have some wear with some small tears in the fabric due to its age. There is a small hole where a mouse has chewed through to the straw inside. Located at the back. see pics) The straw inside is an indicator of its old age and authenticity. The fabric is also faded. The piece folds in the centre and is secured by a brass section which slides in to pl ace. The handle in made of a natural material and has carved hand and flower decoration. The canopy is made of silk. The canopy measures 48cm/19" acr oss, the total length of the piece is 61 cm/ 24" and the handle measures 28cm/11" The condition of the frame and handle is very good but it is an antique so shows signs of u se. Beautiful antique japanese small lidded bowl. Handpainted; flowers and gilding.
Here's a charming little antique lidded bowl made in Japan. It's decorated with yellowish flowers with red highlights and some darker browns and greens. The effect is almost watercolor like. There is also some gilding throughout the decoration. The underside has the words HANDPAINTED and NIPPON. I don't really know how old this piece is but it is in very good condition and is quite pretty. It's about 3 1/4 inch in diameter and about 2 1/4 inches tall at its tallest. A nice little piece.

These beautiful boxes were once used to hold chochin. Or Japanese lanterns in their folded forms. They would usually live on a high shelf or lintel, housing the lanterns until they were needed. These boxes bear a mon. Or family insignia(which, out of interest, is very similar to– but not exactly the same as– the Asano clan, famous as the clan of the chushingura. Or 47 Ronin. Antique Japanese wooden tabakobon – small hibachi for kiseru / pipe smoking
This georgeous tabakobon is a small hibachi/ ashtray used for smoking with the kiseru. Or Japanese pipe. Tabakobon were used during tea ceremony, and were usually placed out for guests at ryokan(traditional inns) This tabakobon has rich coloured lacquer on the top and side. With the top including an image of a sensu, or folded fan. The copper-coloured tin insert would have held ash(and possibly charcoal. If used as a mini hibachi/ brazier) while the bamboo held water. This item would make a great addition to a collection of Japanese antiques. Antique Japanese kandouko – sake warmer
For a while. I collected kandouko– portable boxes for warming sake and cooking small snacks. This is one of the best I found. This kandouko is solidly built. And weighs in at nearly 2 kg. It has a beautiful patina. Including the dark colouration you can see above the air intake hole on the left. In use. The main compartment was filled with water. Charcoal was put in the left hand section. A tokkuri, or sake flask, was placed in the right-hand section, and would gently warm the sake. Small snacks could be cooked directly above the charcoal on a grill. Antique Japanese Silver Spoon with 2 Imperial Dragons stamped Bisansha Yokohama
A Beautiful Japanese sterling silver spoon. Made by the renowned Bisansha Yokohama craftsmen Circa 1900 Mejii Period The spoon is in very good condition. It has light superficial scratches only. There is a small dent to the underside of the spoon due to the spoon being placed down- please see photographs. The decoration shows a Dragon on the spoon head itself chasing a flaming pearl and along the handle there is another Dragon coiled along the handle. Antique c1910? CHINESE or JAPANESE DRAGON CIGARETTE CASE HMS MUTINE Silverplate
I am not sure whether this cigarette case originates in Japan or China. It is silverplated and has the name of its original owner. Gerald Bell who served on the HMS Mutine. According to the internet, there was a"Mutine" which was launched in 1900, which served in the"Australian and Chinese stations" There was also a ship of the same name launched in 1948, but the case looks earlier. Those of you who know when this style of export ware cigarette case was available would be able to also date the era of service I would think. The case comes in fairly good condition apart from the loss of some plating, mainly near the corners. There is a little piece of metal edging missing near the spine(see photo) and I think that the arms which are meant to hold the cigarettes in place might have been sprung, but now they are loose.
