And their point was well proven on Friday, January19, when Christie's offered its sale of Important American Furniture, Silver, Prints, Folk Art and Decorative Arts. Old surfaces and American history reigned at this sale, Martha Willoughby, head of the American Decorative Arts department, said. This"surface" point was well taken with the sale of the top lot, the Biddle-Cadwalader family Chippendale pie crust tea table in mahogany. This piece, attributed to the shop of Benjamin Randolph, Philadelphia, circa 1775, was listed as the property of a Philadelphia gentleman, a descendant of the original owner, and the opening ... morebid was $750,000. These are the real deal. Not reproductions, not refurbished or Imitations. Brought back from Central France centuries ago. These have been in my family forever, and I hate to part with them, but they arent being used. Because of age they do show wear from expansion and contraction from heat and cold as when they were being used there was no electricity for heat, only fire. The history of these Chenets or"fire dogs" is amazing. Used during WWll and other historical periods, these pieces have survived and are sure to add character and warmth to any home. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. So where do I begin with this item? Well. Rather than calling it a chair I will instead call it a gothic throne- With the beautiful stamped leather seats. take a look at the pictures and you will clearly see why. The carving and the craftsmanship of this throne is nothing short of stunning. The detail is so intricate and incredibly ornate.I believe that it is stained white oak. I've searched the throne over extensively and cannot find a maker's mark or name. I imported them myself from France/Belgium. Some of the back seats needs a little work as you can see in the 5th and 6th picture. Price is for one chair. Huge lot of 10 Antique Chinese Snuff Bottles from a High End Auction! Must See!
Up for auction is an incredible lot of 10 antique Chinese Snuff Bottles that I won at a high end Beverly Hills Auction. They were valued at $400- $600 dollars. The bottles appear to be in overall great condition and seem to be old. They range from what appear to be ceramic. Glass, jade? bone, and some kind of stone. I am by no means an expert so these are being sold AS IS. One of the bottles(blue) is missing its top and a few others have tops that might not be their orignal tops. The bottles will come in a beautiful silk box that does have some wear on its edges. A few of the bottles appear to be made out of jade and soap stone, and are quite heavy. Again.
