1755 Vaugondy Map- Amerique Septentrionale The Vaugondy family produced a large number of atlases from about 1740 to the end of the century. Apart from the large'Atlas Universelle' and the small'Atlas Militaire' They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers, none more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from about 1751 until well into the 1800's. The editions in the 1700s all used Vaugondy maps, often dated 1750, but issued into the 1780's. Later 18th century editions had new maps engraved but faithfully following Vaugondy's outdated geography of up to half a century earlier. This map of colonial North America was issued in a 1755 edition of Crozat and shows nearly ... morethe whole continent but wisely leaves out the north west which was soon to become an area of cartographic speculation in the late 1700's. Nlle Angleterre(New England) refers to all the English colonies down the eastern seaboard. While much of the central area is called'Floride' and'Louisiane' Canada stretches well south of its current border. The map measures 6" by 6" with two folds(as issued) Has outline hand colouring, and is in good condition with light browning. The map is guaranteed to be over 250 years old. The process for the printing appears to be a gelatin silver print which would date this to the late 1800's-early 1900's. There are margin issues and it does have antique tape as shown in photos. Journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. The work contains maps by Jacques Nicolas Bellin as well a number of views and engravings. Bellin is a common name in collected cartography and his enormous output was aided by his privileged position as the French royal Hydrographer. Is known more for his authorship of the five volume"Description de l'Univers' one of the earliest printed miniature, illustrated world history/geography books. This engraving comes from the first German edition of'Description de l'Univers' It shows an Inuit family dressed in polar bear furs. The map has a lot of tears tape stains. There is a section about 4 1/2 inches by 5 inches of the map missing. This has a section telling about farming. It also says For Sale in section or Fractions by Edward Northam 482 Montgomery Street San Francisco or at the agency in Los Angeles. This must be referring to the sell of the ranch after he lost it due to the draught in 1868. There is also a section on one side about 5 inches long and 1 inch wide where the map is missing. Intersting note, Sanfrancisco appears to be the largest city in California in 1867 and the Central Pacific RR has only made it from Scremento through Truckee Pass(by Donner Pass) and to Big Bend, Nevada at this time on it's way to Promitory Pass in Utah. Map has a few wrinkles along the edge and 4 small, under 1/2" tears along the top edge and some discoloration running along the left edge. RARE* ANTIQUE 1862 MAPS of the NORTH AMERICA 150 years old HIGHLY DETAILED HAND-COLORED CIVIL WAR ERA LOOK AT THE STRANGE"DISTRICTING" OF BRITISH AMERICA(or what will become Canada several years after this) This old Civil-War-Era map features an evolving United States- pre West Virginia and rapidly shifting state and territorial borders in the West. Alaska is still a Russian Possession. Panama is still part of Columbia. But. As highlighted, the strange districting of"British America" soon-to-be Canada) is what really makes this map rare and unique. I did some quick research. Trying to find an explanation for the areas/ districts/ territories/ quasi-provinces- whatever you want to call them- and found two things: 1. J. H. Colton was a previous partner of this mapmaker. A. J. Johnson. Starting in 1855(what I've found ... moreout so far) Colton arranged"Canada" in this way. 2. I haven't found another mapmaker that depicted pre-Canada this way. 3. The names of the districts correspond fairly well to districts used by the North West Company. A fur trading business headquartered in Montreal from 1779 to 1821. Then in 1821. North West Company merged with its long-term rival, the well-known Hudson's Bay Company. The companies maintained trading posts where company managers and clerks(sometimes called proprietors) kept records of the local fur trade.
