1723 Moll Map- The English Empire in America. Newfoundland, Canada, Hudsons Bay Herman Moll was probably the greatest self-promoter of all eighteenth century cartographers. A Dutch/German emigre to London in the late 1600's. He managed to find influential friends and backers and he enjoyed success right up to his death in 1732. His atlases included'Thesaurus Geographicus' A System of Geography' Atlas Minor' Atlas Manuale' The Compleat Geographer' and'The World Described' many of which used the same copperplate maps. He also contributed maps to Oldmixon's'British Empire in N. America' This attractive map of eastern North America comes from a scarce 1723 edition of'The Compleat Geographer' and is a fine example of Moll's distinctive engraving style. Cartographer: Robert Wilkinson(fl. c. 1768- 1825) was a London based map and atlas publisher active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Most of Wilkinson's maps were derived from the earlier work of John Bowles. One of the preeminent English map publishers of the 18th century. Wilkinson's acquired the Bowles map plate library following the cartographer's death in 1779. Wilkinson updated and tooled the Bowles plates over several years until, in 1794, he issued his fully original atlas, The General Atlas of the World. This popular atlas was profitably reissued in numerous editions until about 1825 when Wilkinson died. In the course of his nearly 45 years in the map ... moretrade, Wilkinson issued also published numerous independently issued large format wall, case, and folding maps. Wilkinson's core cartographic corpus includes Bowen and Kitchin's Large English Atlas(1785) Speer's West Indies(1796) Atlas Classica(1797) and the General Atlas of the World(1794, 1802, and 1809) as well as independent issue maps of New Holland(1820) and North America( 1823) Wilkinson's offices were based at no. 58 Cornhill, London form 1792 to 1816, following which he relocated to 125 Frenchurch Street, also in London, where he remained until 1823. This great old map measures 6 x 8 inches. That is the image. It is colored in orange and yellow The background paper is the color of brown paper bag. It is not dated but I would guess early 1800's or even earlier. There is a hole the size of a pencil eraser on the left side roughly at the bottom of Lake Champlain. The Legend reads Vermont from actual surgery, American miles and then a scale of miles, Engraved for M Carey. At the tops of the map it reads 2degrees Lon. E. from Philad. At the bottom of the map it reads 73 degrees Lon. W. from London. I'm not sure I have that exactly right but to the best of my ability that is how it reads. Good Luck!

It was published by Order of the Colonial Marine Department. The map shows details of 4 islands: Grande Miquelon, Petite Miquelon, St. Pierre and the very small Ile Verte. These islands are located just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The map is printed on a heavy stock paper and has one horizontal fold line. This beautiful very old map is taped down on cardboard and black paint is sprayed around it. The paint is not on the actual map but is on the boarder of the map. California is drawn as a peninsula. Pawn Stars purchased a map similar to this and California was the same. It was also an Amerique map. I do not know the age. PLEASE review the pics to get the details of this very unusual map. There is a tear but it is not bad. You can see it if you look closely to the pics. The map that I thought was similar was purchased by Rick from his vacation to Europe. He paid several thousand dollars for the map he purchased. May not be anything like it. But it sure looks similar to me.

Very unusual map depicting all of South America and most of North America. The map is totally devoid of political detail with the exception that the floating city of Mexico is shown a bit too far north and California is named. Instead the map features the principal rivers. Lakes, mountains and volcanoes in South America. A huge crater lake, probably Lake Titicaca, is situated in the Andes and nearly the entire mountain range is shown as live volcanoes. Three sailing ships and a strapwork title cartouche adorn the map. There is the territory of Apacheria, District des Sioux, Osages, Choctaws, Chippeway, etc. poor condition as the map is spliting in the middle. I will send a piece of document repair tape which is an acid free kind of membrane that you can use to repair the map. It shows Mexico and Central America to the south, and extends to Alaska, Arctic Archipelago" and Greenland"Danish America" in the north. Canada is shown as"British North America, with its largest region identified as Ruperts Land, and a province of Stekin above British Columbia. State boundaries are shown for the U.S. with present day North and South Dakota still appearing as a single unified territory of"Dacota. The map measures 13 x 17.5 inches. And is blank on the back. Its centerfold crease has a 2-inch tear at the left edge. But otherwise the map is in fine condition. The credit lines in small print below the map say: Engraved& Printed in Colours— by J. Without Canada and 18 states to go Those British Possessions were not given Dominion status until 1867. Florida and Texas were only a decade old with California a mere five year old. Nebraska Territory ate up a third of the Mid-west and Alaska was Russian America. In South America. Colombia was named New Grenada. Canada wasn’t officially named until 1867 narrowly missing being named Victoriana and Borealia. Though Cartier called it Canada in 1535 extending as far south as Louisiana(chauvinist Frenchman) The purchaser of this history chart may want to sit for a long exploration adventure. This mahogany framed glass enclosed map is intended to be a hanging piece an it measures 19" from handle to handle and 13.5" wide. There is a repair on the lower left corner of the frame and a minor stain in upper Pacific.

This is a group of five original 1807 issued copper plate maps. Folds as issued but flattened out very well. Sheet is 8 by 11 and 8 by 12.5 inches. These maps was engraved by B. Baker of London. The four maps of Africa. S. America, Asia, Europe would make a nice set on the wall all framed the same and next to one another with the East Indies throw in for accent below or somewhere else.

Description: This is an altogether fascinating map of North America and South America by Jean Janvier dating to 1762. It covers both continents from the Antarctic Circle to the Arctic Circle. Extends westward to New Zealand and eastward as far as Africa and Spain. This map, which is heavily influenced by the theoretical mappings of Guillaume de l'Isle and Philippe Buache, went through several states of which this is the earliest and possibly the most interesting. By far the most interesting aspects of this map deal with Janvier's treatment of the largely unexplored Pacific Northwest. A magnificent sea called the Sea of the West or in this case the'Mer ou Baye ... morede L'Ouest, occupies the greater part of the northwestern part of the continent. This body of water, alternatively called the Sea of the West or Mer de l'Ouest, was speculated by Philippe Buache and Guillaume De l'Isle in the early 18th century based upon wishful thinking, American Indian stories, and the somewhat questionable 16th century explorations of Juan de Fuca. Janvier gives the Mer de l'Ouest its fullest expression, though he stops just short of connecting it to either the network of lakes and rivers extending westward form the Hudson Bay or to the similar network extending westward from Lake Superior. These river and lake networks were being actively explored through the early 18th century by a number of little known but important French explorers. Most specifically the explorations of Verenrye with regard to the discovery of the Lake of the Woods(L. Des Bois) and Lake Winnipeg(L. Ouinipigon) both of which appear on this map. Further north we can find traces of Admiral de Fonte's apocryphal discovery of a passage from the Pacific(starting at the Archipel St. Lazare) eastward via a network of lakes and rivers to Baffin Bay.
