After Jodocus Hondius II's premature death in 1629 his brother Henricus removed the four panels from the plate leaving only the central map and thus matching the size of the other folio maps published in the highly successful Mercator-Hondius Atlas. However. In 1644 the French mapmaker and engraver Nicolas Picart made a close copy of the original plate, restoring the portraits and city plans to three of the four sides of the map. This example of the map(Burden#333) is from a still-later ... moreplate engraved for the 1659 edition of Les Estats. Empires, Royaumes et Principautez du Monde by French historian and(1537-1635) and closely follows the Picart version. Unlike the well-known Blaeu map of 1617. Printed more than 415 years ago. This map is titled Americae Sive Novi Orbis. Nova Descriptio. And the image area measures 31.7 x 36 cm[12-1/2" x 14-1/4" It is based on earlier maps by Ortelius and Mercator of the New World, with Marco Polo's mythical kingdom of Anian located in northwestern America The map includes a fascinating early treatment of the West Coast of North America. Includng Quivira and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. On the East Coast, Florida is prominently named, as well as Cuba, Jamaica, Bermuda, and the Yucatan. A great southern continent. Here called Meridies Terra de Fuego is drawn on an enormous scale, as explorers hoped for a third ... morelarge continent to exploit. New Guinea appears to be connected, although the title block/cartouche sits over its coastline, so it may or may not join the southern continent. This 121 year old map puzzle is complete and in great condition for it being a lithographed paper map over wood. It's very difficult to find this map puzzle complete and in such a condition as this one. On past sales. Examples of this highly collectable map puzzle(with some missing pieces) have sold for upwards of $300. CONDITION: Three small tips are broken: the bottom tip of Maine. The upper tip of West Virginia, and the lower tip of Lake Huron. We are enclosing a tip that belongs to one of those. So there are only two small tips missing. Also, we are including the following pieces: the piece with the letter"C" of Pacific Ocean, the piece with letter"N" of Atlantic Ocean, and a rectangular piece of Idaho. They're all easy to repair. Frobischers Scheeps Togt Pieter Van der Aa was a Dutch publisher and mapmaker whose originilatiy has bee questioned but certainly not the fine decorative quality of his output. One of his many publications was a several volume history of travel and voyages entitled'Naaukeurige versameling der gedenkwaardigste zee- en land reisen' published between 1705 and 1711. This map of the north Atlantic. Greenland and north east Canada comes from that publication. The map shows a voyage of Martin Frobisher from England through south Greenland and back. States roughly follow the 1861 configuration with archaic borders between Nevada and California and Nevada and Utah, whose capital is noted as Fillmore City. The new borders of Nevada as set in the territorial charter forced Johnson to revise his earlier map moving the California border westward to the Sierra Nevada range. This unusual choice infringed upon California's border charter inciting a border dispute between the two regions. The dispute was ... moreformally resolved in 1863 roughly according to the original California charter. This is the only example of Johnson's North America map to show Nevada's original territorial border configuration. Several important transcontinental routes are shown, including the U.S. Mail Route through Texas and New Mexico and the Pony Express route to Sacramento. Description: This is a delightfully whimsical school boy manuscript map of the Western Hemisphere by Henry Whitney. It depicts North America. Central America and South America on a hemispherical projection. Greenland, Polynesia, New Zealand, and the eastern parts of Asia are also featured. The map was hand drawn by Henry Whitney, of the Lewin's Mead Boy's School in Bristol, England, and given the cartography featured in the map, dates to sometime between 1810 and 1820. Schoolboy or schoolgirl maps began appearing in England and the United States in the later part of the 18th and the early 19th century. These wonderful, fascinating, and often whimsical maps are the product of a radical ... morechange in education taking place at this time. Many of the schools(especially the school attended by Henry Whitman at Lewin's Mead, Bristol, which at the time was regarded as a slum) were highly underfunded, and lacked proper education material such as maps and books. One way of adapting was to learn geography by copying maps and atlases borrowed from other institutions. The map depicts the boundaries of the United States prior to the Mexican-American War, and shows American claims to British Columbia. The mapping of Polynesia is particularly interesting. Although Hawaiian Islands are correctly marked, various other islands appear to be either unknown or fictitious. These include the Mistake Islands, Arrowsmith's Island, Massachusett's Islands, Cornwallis Island and several others. Although the map offers limited inland detail, it exhibits very fine and beautifully rendered topography. Maine and Part of Canada are on reverse) Approximate 13.5 by 21.5 inches(34x54.5 cm) I will generally refrain from breaking books or removing maps from atlases, but I do sometimes get an incomplete book that is beyond repair given its state and value. These maps are from such an atlas. Condition is Very Good, with some small tears and wear to the edges. Paper is clean and intact with some age toning. Maps themselves are generally clean, and any other flaws or marks to the maps will be noted here. Very small tear to upper edge. Moderate tear/bent are to lower right paper edge. Popple's map covers from the Hudson Bay to the Spanish Main and from the Rio Grande to the Grand Banks. Seventeen detail city and port plans appear in the lower right quadrant of the map. This map is, as its more common name'Popple's Key Map' suggests, a key to assembling the separate sheets of Popple's massive wall map ... moreof the same region. Several subsequent reissues by various cartographers followed, including a 1746 French edition by Le Rouge upon which the present key map is based. This is an 1887 map of North America. The map measures 21 X 15 inches. Rand McNally was known for printing maps using the latest surveys. This is one of the rarest of all Rand McNally maps. It is from the 1887 Business Atlas. Only one other copy is known to exist and it is in the Roger S. Baskes Collection at the Newberry Library. Chicago, Illinois.
