1855 MAP and BOOK River Systems of Maine Illustrates Well's Water Power
I am selling this HAND COLORED MAP measuring 14" by 16" along with the book that has wear to the cover and a right slant to the book. The map was entered into the Southern District of New York by J. H. Colton& Co. See picture#2. There is age discolor inside the covers of the book and two labels from previous owner. THE BOOK HAS 21 ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS FROM TOWNS ALL OVER MAINE. SOME SHOWN. Book measures 6" by 9" and has 526 pages, the last 75 pages have a slight stain getting a bit more as it gets to the end of the book. Only the last two of the 21 illustrations has any discolor, and that very faint.

The question and answer format, or catechism Smith used was common to schoolbooks of the period. Scholars learned by rote. Memorizing the answer to each question exactly as it appeared in the book. When Jedediah Morse wrote the first American geography in 1784, he included only two maps. In contrast, Smith's geography had many maps and illustrations. It also provided information on and stereotypic images of countries and cultures around the world. Particularly interesting are the criteria Smith used to rank various cultures on a scale of"civilization" that began with" barbarous" and ended with"enlightened. Homann and shows considerable cartographic detail as well as a general increase in knowledge regarding America’s interior from explorations and colonizations. Quivira was the legendary land of gold and silver, sought after by conquistador Francisco de Coronado in 1541. The region north of the Hudson Bay is tenuously mapped, reflecting numerous expeditions, including those Parry, Middleton, James, and Hudson. Parry's discovery of the New Georgia Islands and Bankes Land is noted. The eastern shore of Greenland is similarly speculative, ... morefollowing the model established by William Scoresby as far north as Gale Hawkes Land. Burritt’s 1835 edition of the Atlas to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens this specimen published in 1856 by the American Book Company"by F J Huntington in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the United States in the Southern District of New York. and"under the direction of E. H. Burritt" This 150+ year old celestial map has seen better days. But it's meticulously hand-painted and quite compelling despite the issues. This is from a collection of well used astronomical charts and books belonging to Horace P. Tuttle. A noted astronomer. I have the other charts from this collection if you're interested, but this is the only unframed one I'm ready to sell right now. It's a beautiful piece. But it has all kinds of condition issues which include a fine"powered ... moreresidue" tactile to the touch on the surface; the use of adhesive tape(fairly recently and only on the back) to shore up some particularly fragile parts of the page and excessive foxing/ deep yellowing of the paper in general from abundant use. Please appreciate a repaired tear through the Ram's leg and the Whale which appears to be from use rather than age. The good news is that this is also the finest hand colored map of this type I could research- the stars seem still illuminated with the original sulfur paint(which you can smell) and the coloring/detail is fine. In spite of its flaws. This antique map would be spectacular display piece with the right matte and frame- it's mailed flat in a simple plastic frame for safe keeping during shipping. Cohasset is the prime focus in the center but the map still has tons of detail of the surrounding area along the coast. The topography was surveyed in 1847 to a 1/10,000 scale. 1847 MORMON TRAIL MAP 13" x 38" This colorful map is a day by day reference of the first Mormon Pioneer trek from Nauvoo. Illinois to the Great Salt Lake Valley. The information on this map was compiled by the Apostle Franklin D. Richards in 1897 and the data was mostly taken from the diary of Orson Pratt who was one of the members of the first pioneer party. This route map was originally produced in 1899 to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the Mormon Pioneers entering the Valley of the Great Salt Lake and was carefully restored and reproduced 100 years later in 1997 to commemorate the 150 th anniversary of the Mormon Pioneer trek.
