Novi Orbis Pars Borealis, America Scilicet..... Matthias Quad 1600
Title: Novi Orbis Pars Borealis. America Scilicet, Complectens Floridam, Baccalaon, Canadam, Terram Corte Map Maker: Matthias Quad Date: 1600 Coloring: Uncolored as issued Condition: VG+ Frame Size: 11.75 x 15 inches Beautiful example of Quad's map of North America. Based upon de Jode's landmark map of 1593 Quad's map from his general atlas of the world is one of the earliest maps to concentrate on North America alone. This map is pretty much a condensation of de Jode's Americae Pars Borealis. De Jode was the first to make use of both John White and Jacques le Moyne’s east coast cartography. Although he inaccurately placed it. Quad here continues the mistake of placing the nomenclature of Virginia too far north. A long narrow waterway to the north represents the North West Passage; Lago de Conibas is also indicated. Some names ... morehave been surprisingly left out, notably Bermuda, St. Augustine, Roanoke and Chesapeake. A curious‘second’ peninsula is shown to the west of Florida which could be an early depiction of the Mississippi delta. North & South America 1733 Desing rare miniature map
North& South America 1733 Desing rare miniature map Zur V Haupt Karte Neben Kar. America Nach der Religion Issued Stadt Am Hoff(Germany) 1733 by Gastel, for Desing. Charming and scarce small early 18th century map. Issued for a Catholic geography. Indeed, this Catholic theme underlies the purpose of the geography, which was aimed at youth. In good condition. The map displaying signs of usage. Light soiling and edge-wear, a 3" tear from bottom left side across the vignette to the tip of South America cleanly repaired with archival tape and easy to overlook visually when viewing the map. Note the vast region in North America labelled"Terra Incognita" which has been shaded. As well as the huge river inlet beside Florida, the Great Lakes shown as one huge lake. The large vignette building at bottom left is rather interesting ... moreand a bit of a mystery as to what it represents- it is somehow a temple connected to Catholicism. 1852 Levasseur Map of North America (w/ Republic of Texas)
1852 Levasseur Map of North America(w/ Republic of Texas) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Amerique Septentrionale. Description: A visually stunning decorative map of North America dating to 1852. By French map publisher Victor Levasseur. Levasseur published several different editions of his North America map- this being the most desirable due to its depictions of the ephemeral Republic of Texas. Though cartographically minimalist, there are a number of additional important elements that are worthy of note. These include the extension of Oregon territory well into British Columbia, reflecting the American claims that later led to the 54 40' dispute. Also, the Northwest Passage from Atlantic to Pacific is drawn as an open and practically navigable seaway. By far this map's most striking feature is its elaborate ... moreallegorical border work. Levasseur composed this map for publication in his magnificent Atlas Nacionale de la France Illustree, one of the most decorative and beautifully produced atlases to appear in the 19th century. This particular map is surrounded by wide and elaborate illustrative border work showing the cultural, natural, and trade richness of the Americas. The left hand side of the map depicts European seamen bargaining for indigenous products. In the background is a Mesoamerican style pyramid, dramatic mountain scenery, and a railroad train. The right hand side of the map shows a cross-section of the flora and fauna common to the continent, including a Bison, vultures, a polar bear, an elk, a fox and an alligator. In the undergrowth, a leopard lies hidden. At the base of the map a classically dressed woman lounges with a St. Bernard and Bale of Cotton. To either side her text boxes offer additional information about the discovery, history, and culture of the region. A population table appearing at the bottom of the map gives statistics for the Arctic(50,000) Alaska or Russian America(50,000) British America(1,200,000) the United States(19,000,000) Texas(200

In a unusual move for a British cartographer Hall recognizes American rather than British claims to the British Columbia- Vancouver region. Perhaps his sympathies secretly lay with the former colonies? Numerous islands are identified along with notes on their discovery. Near the southern tip of South America, Hall marks the Aurora Islands'doubtful' The Aurora Islands were a group of three islands first reported in 1762 by the Spanish ship Aurora while sailing from Lima to Cadiz. They were subsequently and repeatedly sighted several times over the next 90 years. The last official sighting was 1852, after which they were ascribed to myth. Though the Aurora Islands never really existed they continued to appear on maps well into the mid-19th century. Wessell's voyage to latitude 74°15' S(the region that would later be known as the Weddell Sea) is here noted. Hall also marks the southernmost point of Captain Cook's explorations aboard the HMS Resolution. It was this voyage that decisively proved the postulated continent of Terra Australis to be a myth. 1818 Pinkerton Map of the Western Hemisphere (North America, South America)
1818 Pinkerton Map of the Western Hemisphere(North America. South America) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Western Hemisphere. Description: A rare and important 1818 map of the Western Hemisphere by John Pinkerton. Depicts North America. Central America and South America as well as parts of Polynesia, Siberia and Greenland. In North America, thanks primarily to the work of Cook in the Pacific Northwest the coasts are rendered with considerable accuracy. The interior of North America, particularly the American West, is still rather vague, though much of the cartography is clearly derived from Humboldt's explorations. Notes the conjectural Lake Timpanagos, often associated with indigenous reports of the Great Salt Lake. The United States, still quite small, does not yet include Florida, Louisiana, California ... moreor Texas. South America exhibits its typical clear outline and speculative interior. Pinkerton resurrects the idea of Lake Parima in Guyana- supposed site of El Dorado- which had all but disappeared from most other early 19th century maps. On the other hand, Pinkerton has dropped the Apocryphal Laguna de Xarayes, commonly located at the northern extremis of the Paraguay or Parma River. However, he does note several supposed gold mines deep in the Amazon, which may or may not reflect indigenous legends of El Dorado. Drawn by L. Herbert and engraved by Samuel Neele under the direction of John Pinkerton. The map comes from the scarce American edition of Pinkerton’s Modern Atlas, published by Thomas Dobson& Co. of Philadelphia in 1818. Size: Printed area measures 22 inches high by 20 inches wide. Condition: Very good condition. Minor discoloration along original centerfold. Minor dampstaining in lower margins. Blank on verso. 1812 Pinkerton Map of North America and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: The World on Mercators Projection Western Part Description: A scarce. Beautiful, and exceptionally interesting example of John Pinkerton's stunning 1812 map of North America and South America. The map covers all of North American, Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. It extends northwards as far as Greenland and Alaska, incorporating the full Hudson Bay, southwards include all of South America, eastwards to Europe and Africa, and westwards to Hawaii, the Aleutian Islands, and the Friendly Islands. Cartographically this map represents a notable attempt to combine cartographic speculation with new discoveries and political advocacy and is most interesting for its presentation of North America. ... moreDrawn at the height of British- American hostilities related to the War of 1812, the North American portions of this map heavily advocate for British interests. Despite being issued in 1812, the western boundary of American terminates at the Mississippi River- a clear rejection of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. There is a reason for this. By the turn on of the 19th century, it had become abundantly clear to everyone involved that the true wealth of North America lay in the fur trade, particularly the export of beaver pelts to the infinitely wealthy markets of Asia. By this time there were two forces in the fur trade, semi-independent American traders following in the footsteps of Louis and Clark and British traders operating under the jurisdiction of the Hudson Bay Company, whose territorial monopoly they were actively extending towards the Pacific. The key to exploiting this region was control of the Columbia River, which provided an easy access point to the interior. The explorations of Louis and Clark, as well as the acquisition of Louisiana and its tentative inclusion of the as yet unnamed Oregon region put the commercial ambitions of the Hudson Bay Company's Northwest
1809 Tardieu Map of North America
1809 Tardieu Map of North America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Amerique Septentrionale. Description: A highly uncommon and desirable 1810 map of North America by the French cartographer Ambrose Tardieu. Depicts all of North America including Canada. Mexico the United States at a formative but ephemeral period shortly following the U.S. acquisition of Louisiana but prior to both the acquisition of Florida, Texas and Upper California, and the 54°40' Oregon boundary dispute. Mexico controls much of what is today the Southwestern United States and California. As this map was being produced several major events were in process that would eventually redefine the cartography of the region, but Tardieu had access to little of this information. Instead he relies on old Spanish records, speculations, and the ... moredata collected by the Dominguez-Escalante expedition of 1776 and 1777 and Zebulon Pike's expedition of 1806. Both Lake Timpanagos(Great Salt Lake) and Lake Teguyo(Utah Lake) are appear- though both are speculative and malformed at this point. Also shows are speculative courses of the Colorado River in the Rocky Mountains. Louisiana is joined to the united states by the map's color coding, but demarcated along the Mississippi River as a distinctly separate zone. The northwestern boundaries of Louisiana in what is today British Columbia, Oregon and Washington, remain indistinct. Tardieu recognizes Russian Claims to Alaska as well as French and British Claims to Canada and certain properties in the West Indies. In the far north hopeful traces of the Northwest Passage remain, with the seas identified by Mackenzie and Hearne- likely the Dolphin and Union Strait- duly noted. Greenland is also, curiously, attached to the mainland. A decorative title cartouche in the lower left hand quadrant details some of the flora and fauna of the continent. Size: Printed area measures 11.5 inches high by 9 inches wide. Condition: Very good condition. Blank on verso. Shipping: Due to recent i

1796 Mannert Map of North America and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: America nach der zweyten Ausgabe von Arrowsmiths Weltcharte und dessen Globular Projection nach den Berichten der Jesuiten und anderer Reisebe Schreiber. Und nach Raymals, Gatterers, Angaben entworten von C. Mannert. Description: An extremely scarce 1796 map of north and south America by C. Mannert. Depicts the Americas shortly following the close of the American Revolutionary War in 1783. The whole is color coded according to political conventions. With British controlled territories in Red, Spanish dominions in yellow, French in green, and the fledgling United States in blue-green. Mountains and other topographical features are rendered by hachure, making Mannert's 1796 map one of the first to employ this mapping convention. ... moreThroughout, Mannert has dedicated significant attention to the naming of various American Indian nations including the Sioux, Otter, Sack, Creek(Crik) Miami, Paduca, Arkansas, and others. Cartographically Mannert references the work of Aaron Arrowsmith published in the same year, though it is far from a copy with numerous refinements and advancements in evidence. Mannert recognizes the United States east of the Mississippi, south of the Great Lakes, and north of Florida. None of the original states are identified, however the regions of Carolina, Georgia, and'Kentuke' are noted. This map's most interesting element is most likely its treatment of the western parts of North America. At the extreme west the discoveries of Captain Cook are evident in the well-defined coastlines as far north as Alaska. Here the Bering Strait has been renamed Cook's Strasse. Drakes harbor, the mysterious location where Sir Frances Drake repaired his ships(and claimed New Albion for England) on his historic circumnavigation, is here identified with San Francisco Bay. Further inland the cartography becomes increasingly vague with places like Teguayo, Quivara, and Cenis(all remnants ea
1785 Clouet Map of North America and South America
1785 Clouet Map of North America and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: De L'Amerique en General. Description: This is a beautifully hand colored 1785 map of North America and South America. The cartography of the North America west coast is conjectural at best. With islands, inland seas, and hopeful northwest passages in abundance. The Antarctic regions are depicted in a fascinating configuration of two land masses. A great western continent called“New Zealand” and an eastern continent called“Antarctiq” separated by an Ice Sea. Curiously this conjectural error of Clouet in some ways more accurately portrays the true sub-ice Antarctica than modern day maps. Includes detailed geographic, political, and cultural descriptions of areas the cartographer, Clouet, considered important: The continent, Tierra ... moredel Fuego(Terre de Feu) New Zealand, Solomon Islands, The Azores(Acores) and the Cape Verde Islands. Printed for inclusion in the 1785 edition of J. Clouet’s Geographie Moderne. Size: Printed area measures 12.5 inches high by 22 inches wide. Condition: Fine or perfect condition. 1783 Janvier Map of North America and South America
1783 Janvier Map of North America and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: L'Amerique divisee Par Grands Etats. Description: An altogether fascinating map of North America and South America by Jean Janvier dating to 1883. Covers both continents from the Antarctic Circle to the Arctic Circle. Extends westward to New Zealand and eastward as far as Africa and Spain. The'Sea of the West' speculated by Philippe Buache and Guillaume De l'Isle in the early 18th century, has here been eliminated. Instead, the discoveries of Cook, both in Hawaii and in the Pacific Northwest are beginning to emerge- with Alaska being vaguely recognizable. On the opposite side of the map, Janvier places the Great Lakes firmly within French territory, a clear case of carto-advocacy. He also extends Spanish control ... moreof the eastern coast of North America well north of the traditional Florida boundary to including Georgia and parts of Carolina. South America is typically well mapped along the coastlines and relatively speculative throughout the interior. Janvier drops the popular myth of Lake Parima and Eldorado in Guyana, but maintains the Lac Xarayes as the northern terminus of the Paraguay River. The Xaraiés, meaning'Masters of the River' were an indigenous people occupying what are today parts of Brazil's Matte Grosso and the Pantanal. When Spanish and Portuguese explorers first navigated up the Paraguay River, as always in search of El Dorado, they encountered the vast Pantanal flood plain at the height of its annual inundation. Understandably misinterpreting the flood plain as a gigantic inland sea, they named it after the local inhabitants, the Xaraies. The Laguna de los Xarayes almost immediately began to appear on early maps of the region and, at the same time, almost immediately took on a legendary aspect as the gateway to El Dorado. Polynesia is mapped with numerous islands named, but few are the correct size or in the correct place. Hawaii, which has just been dis
1780 Buache Map of the West Indies, Florida, and the Antilles
1780 Buache Map of the West Indies. Florida, and the Antilles WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Carte du Golphe du Mexique et des isles Antilles. Description: A fine example of the 1789 Dezauche edition of Buache's important map of the West Indies. Centered on Cuba. This massive map covers Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, the West Indies, and the Caribbean from Mexico and Texas to the Lesser Antilles and from Florida to the Spanish Main. Cartographically Buache derived this map from Henry Popple's remarkable 1733 map of North America. As a whole it exhibits numerous significant advances over earlier Buache/ De L'Isle model of the region. These include a more sophisticated mapping of peninsular Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the interior of Texas, Florida, and Mexico. The Mission de Los Teijas, one ... moreof the first usages of the world'Texas' and a published map, is noted. Rumb lines are evident throughout, suggesting this map sea chart sources. The casual observer might note a similarity in form to Herman Moll's similarly sized 1710 map of the West Indies. Like Moll's map Buache's map can be understood, though to a lesser extent, in the context of Caribbean piracy and privateering, which reached its zenith in the middle part of the 18th century. Buache identifies the trade winds with little arrows and the routes taken by Spanish Galleons traveling between the treasure ports of Havana and Veracruz. The Spanish treasure fleet entered the Caribbean via the passage between Granada and Trinidad. The fleet then sailed westwards, skirting the Spanish Main until they reached Cartagena(region shaded in light blue) where they rested and provisioned before heading northwards, rounding western Cuba and stopping in Havana. Using the strong Gulf Stream current- shown here- ships would sail northwards from Havana while being steadily forced to the southeast thus alighting at the deep water port of Veracruz. On the return, laden with silver from the mines of San Luis Potosi
1760 Desnos and De La Tour Map of North America and South America
1760 Desnos and De La Tour Map of North America and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Amerique. Description: This is an extremely rare example of Desnos and Brion de la Tour's c. 1760 mapping of America. Covers both North America and South America from Greenland to Cape Horn. Overall the general form of the continents exhibit an craggy and exceptionally rugged coast line- a step back from some more advanced maps of this region available at the time. The cartography of North America. Particularly the pre-Cook northwest is speculative and indistinct. The cartographer hints at a Northwest Passage via the lake and river systems extending westward from the St. Lawrence, through the Great Lakes, to Lake Winnipeg and the Lake of the Woods. Though the westwards passage is incomplete, a suggestive open ... moreinlet does appear just north of Cape Mendocino. This variant on the Northwest Passage was the great unrealized hope of the French Empire in North America, who unlike the Spanish to the south, had no easy access to the trade riches of the Pacific. Identifies the English colonies along the East Coast, in Newfoundland, and around the Hudson Bay. Spanish holdings in Mexico and Florida are also noted. Here the cartographer, a Frenchman, has exaggerated the extent of French Louisiana. A clear case of carto-advocacy and pandering to a constituency. In South America the interior is even more vaguely mapped than in North America. The Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata river systems penetrate deeply into the continent, but exhibit none of the vast network of tributaries for which they are best known. The Rio de La Plata terminates at the Lac Xarayes, a mythical lake often associated with legends of the Earthly Paradise and El Dorado, but in fact simply a misinterpretation of the Pantanal during its annual inundation. To the left and right of the map are statistical tables and French language descriptions of the continents. Surrounding the whole is an elaborate decorative border featuring floral
1752 Postlethwayte Wall Map of North America
1752 Postlethwayte Wall Map of North America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: North America. Description: This is an exceptionally interesting and beautiful 1752 wall map of North America composed by Malachy Postlethwayte. Postlethwayte. An Englishman, prepared this map for issue in conjunction with the second edition(1752) of his popular Dictionary of Trade& Commerce. Cartographically this map is based upon the earlier work of the French mapmaker J. B. B. D’Anville. This is a curious choice on Postlethwayte's part for he, a proud Englishman, uses every opportunity to rail against the land grubbing improprieties of the French cartographers, especially D’Anville, who he feels has unfairly usurped British claims in the New World. To his credit, King George’s War and just ended in 1748 and the French and Indian ... moreWar, which would start in 1754, was already brewing. Many of the issues that influenced these wars, including overlapping colonial claims, are evident on this map. Postlethwayt hired the rather obscure English cartographer Mr. Bolton to update and rectify D’Anville’s mapping. While evident throughout the map, some of the more noteworthy of these changes include the refutations of French claims east of the Mississippi, a rejection of French claims in Canada east of James Bay, and a reassertion of British claims in New Albion(north of New Mexico) True to form, Postlethwayte’s interest is commerce, and, with specific reference to this map, cartographically wresting the lucrative fur trade in the upper Mississippi Valley and around the Hudson Bay away from the French. In addition to Postlethwayte’s interesting, sometimes ranting, and patriotic commentary, this map features a number of additional interesting elements inherited from D’Anville. In drawing the map D’Anville made heavy use of reports of Native American cartographic knowledge brought back by French fur traders in the upper Mississippi Valley. There are numerous instances, such as the river connection between the Lake

1744 Bowen Map of the Atlantic Ocean(including the West Indies. Europe, Africa, and North America) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: A New and Accurate Chart of the Western Ocean. Description: A fine map of the Atlantic Ocean drawn by Emmanuel Bowen in 1744. The map covers from the Arctic Ocean to South America and Africa's Slave Coast and from Cuba and Florida eastwards as far As England and Sardinia. Rhumb lines throughout allude to this map originals as a nautical chart. As such it offers little inland detail but copious notations of important ports and harbors along the coast. As well as, at top center, comments regarding the currents, trade winds, and other weather patterns. A track, including a miniature sailing ship, represents the most likely course of Columbus as he sailed to discover the New World. ... moreAnd, yet, Bowen calls just this into question with a curious comment set just below the title cartouche: Tho' Columbus is generally supposed to have been the first Discoverer of y New World, Yet there is great probability that Madoc a Prince of North Wales sailed from thence and landed on y Coast of Florida Anno 1170. Madoc, also known as Madog ab Owain Gwynedd was, according to folklore, a Welsh prince who sailed to America in 1170, roughly three hundred years before the voyages of Columbus. The legend though quite ancient, became popular during the Elizabethan era, when English propagandists seized on the story to assert prior discovery, and hence legal possession, of North America. A later variant on the legend claims that Madoc's and his company intermarried with Native Americans, and that their Welsh-speaking descendants still lived somewhere on the American frontier as'Welsh Indians' The map moreover advocates for English control of much of northern Florida based upon the original Carolina Charter established in 1663 by Charles the II. Further north the map incudes the Grand Banks– a Cod Fishing heaven hotly disputed by various colonial powers well into the

Lord Archbishop of Armagh, Primate and Metropolitan of all Ireland and One of the Lords Justices of the said Kingdom this map of North America According to the Newest and most Exact Observations is most humbly Dedicated by your Graces most humble Serv: Geo: Grierson. Description: An antique map discovery of the utmost rarity. Ostensibly. This is a fine example of Hermann Moll’s important and highly desirable 1720 Codfish Map, entitled“To the Right Honourable John Lord Sommers. Upon closer inspection however, an entirely different picture emerges– this is in fact the Irish map publisher George Grierson’s 1732 piracy of Moll’s Codfish Map, entitled, To his Grace Hugh Lord Archbishop… Although clearly copied ... morefrom Moll’s map, Grierson’s map is actually a completely new engraving, with original cartouche work, an Irish-centric dedication, and a host of lesser variations throughout. Grierson’s piracies of Moll’s maps are far rarer and more desirable than Moll’s own work, the present example being the only known Grierson Codfish Map to have ever been on the market and possibly the only one extant. Grierson published this map, and many others, in the year of Moll’s death, 1732, a clear piracy of Moll’s The World Described, most largest and impressive atlas. Today no known complete example of Grierson’s The World Described has survived, though very rarely individual maps, like the present example, do surface. In The Cartographer and the Literati- Herman Moll and his Intellectual Circle( Edwin Mellen Press, 1997) Dennis Reinhartz notes that two editions of[Moll's Large Atlas] The World Described. were done by the Dublin publisher George Grierson. all of the maps in the Irish editions were completely re-engraved, even to the point of understandably having been rededicated to contemporary Irish notables. The Grierson atlas had new and/or changed cartouches, dedicatio

De L'Academie Royal des Sciences. Etx. Description: A fine 1729 map of North America by Pieter Van der Aa with an elaborate frame style border. Centered on the Great Lakes. This map covers all of North America from the Baffin Bay to the Spanish Map and from California to the Azores(Acores) The map is color coded according to the dominant colonial powers; the regions of Florida, New Mexico, New Spain(Mexico) California, Nouvelle France, the lands of the Hudson Bay Company, and the British Colonies along the eastern seaboard being identified. The western and northwestern parts of the map are largely blank or hidden behind the large allegorical title cartouche; however ... morethere are some interesting elements nonetheless. These include a rare, somewhat accurate mapping of Quivira in the center of the continent– earlier and later maps move it westward into New Mexico. Parts of California are identified as New Albion following the English convention. To the west of Mexico, exploratory routes used by d'Oliver, Cortez, and Drake are ghosted in. On the opposite side of the map the Sargasso Sea is illustrated and at its center, the phantom island of Borondon. Better known as St. Brendan's Island, Borondon appears in texts as early as the 9th century. According to the legend, St. Brenden was and Irish monk who, along with his confederates, sailed westward into the Atlantic in the hopes of evangelizing to undiscovered island peoples. Some claim that Brenden made it all the way to Newfoundland in the 6th century, on the way discovering his namesake island. Traditionally the island is located to the west of the Canaries, where it is called the'Eighth Canary Island, and it appears only to the Blessed, earning it another name, the Isle of the Blessed. While this map is not exceptionally uncommon, examples with the distinctive frame style border,

En van Louisania Nieuwelyks Ontdekt Description: A work that fundamentally impacted the cartographic history of America. This is the 1688 first Dutch edition of Friar Hennepin’s most important work describing his explorations through the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi valley. This book includes the first map to name Louisiana as well as some of the earliest descriptions and depictions of the regions, including Niagara Falls. The enclosed map, entitled Kaart van Nieuw Vrankryk en van Louisiana, covers all north American from the Strait of Anian and California(which is attached to the mainland) as far east as the Grand Banks, as far north as Lake Assenipoils(Winnipeg) ... moreand as far south as Antilles and the Spanish Main. It also includes Denys’ description of New France and the coasts of North America. Unlike earlier editions of this work, which only had two image plates(Niagara Falls and a Bison) this edition of Hennepin’s book contains four plates depicting indigenous life and interactions with the explorers. This book is considered“One of the most important volumes in the early history of North America” Lande) being the first printed description of La Salle’s explorations. In 1679 the French lord René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle set out from Fort Frontenac, on Lake Ontario, to explore the Great Lakes and eventually make their way to the Mississippi River. La Salle was of the belief that the Mississippi connected to other water routes that would eventually lead to the Pacific. His scribe and chronicler on this expedition was a Dutch Friar of the Franciscan Recollect order, Antoine Louis Hennepin. Hennepin, who had a passion for“pure and severe virtue” and La Salle, who had a passion for“moral weaknesses” never quite saw eye to eye. Nonetheless, the expedition sailed(and were the first to do so) through Lake Ontario, Lake Erie
