Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes the United States including states and territories. British Possessions(Canada) Russian America(Alaska) Mexico, part ... moreof Central America and the West Indies, Greenland and Iceland. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Visible in the image above. The reverse side is blank. This is a poster print of the Lewis and Clark trail in Montana. It has notations for all the significant occurances along the trail as well as animals and plants that were discovered. This was researched with a historian at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive center in Great Falls. Montana and was approved for accuracy by the Lewis and Clark Forest Service. Here is an authentic 156 year old Map of North America! This brightly colored map is an original antique document and not a reproduction or copy. It showcases the countries. States, territories, railroads and cities that made up the region in 1858. Unlike many maps of this era, the 1858 date is boldly printed along the lower left edge. The map was published just after the Civil War by S. Augustus Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was one of a handful of 19th century cartographers who made his fortune producing accurate. Finely detailed maps and atlases. North America in 1858 was quite different from North America today as this map so wonderfully represents. Indian tribal nations are marked throughout the western US. While prominent cities in the East are easily located. There are"Gold Regions" in California and Colorado TEXAS is home to the ... moreCamanche Indian Nation. And the El Llano Estacado is named. Austin, Dallas, Houston and many other cities are marked. The map features bright hand-painted colors and old-fashioned lettering. You are bidding on this large. 34” by 38” color map of Elkton Virginia, dated 1890. Rare highly detailed town plan of Elkton. Virginia, drawn by A.T. Amiss for the Elkton Improvement Company(A.G. Walker, Civil and Topographical Engineer of Luray, Virginia) The map is almost certainly the first printed map of the town, which was part of a development plan charted in 1891. This highly detailed map shows the town of Elkton. Virginia, on the Shenandoah River, with a smaller map in the upper left corner showing the area 150 miles around Elkton. The map includes a long explanatory note from the promoters, advising that the streets shown on the map may not be constructed and are subject to change. The map provides a marvelously elaborate town plan, complete with a waterfront part, bridges, areas reserved for a commercial district, parks, school ... moresites, hotel grounds, etc. Includes contour lines, identifying the topographical details of the town, along with roads into town. The town of Elkton was the promotional brainchild of the Elkton Improvement Company. The Charter and by-laws of the Elkton Improvement Company. Elkton, Virginia, which was printed in 1891, notes that the company was created"to acquire by purchase, lease or otherwise real and personal estate in the counties of Rockingham, Page, Green and Albemarle in the State of Virginia, to carry on and conduct the business of mining and manufacturing. to lay out towns. A 4 page prospectus for the company entitled Prospectus of the Elkton Improvement Company, Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia, was printed in 1890, although there is no indication from the 2 surviving examples in OCLC that it included a printed map. A broadside advertising the sale of lots entitled Valuation of lots in the town of Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia, to be offered at public auction on Thursday and Friday, 23d and 24th of Oct. 1890, also survives in the collection of the University of Virginia. Apart from the large'Atlas Universelle' and the small'Atlas Militaire' They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers, none more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from about 1751 until well into the 1800's. The first issue in 1751 is quite scarce. 1679 Du Val Map- America Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660. The charming little maps and engravings from that work are very distinctive. He was a member of the patrician Basel Merian family. Early life and marriage Born in Basel, Merian learned the art of copperplate engraving in Zürich. He next worked and studied in Strasbourg, Nancy, and Paris, before returning to Basel in 1615.
