ANTIQUE MAP -1833- FINLEY MAP of RHODE ISLAND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION
Normal 0 false false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Title: RHODE ISLAND Mapmaker: FINLEY Published: 1833 Description: This is an early and original antique map of the State of Rhode Island. This map comes from the 1833 edition of Finley's New General Atlas of The World. It was published by Anthony Finley. Engraved by Young and Delleker and printed by Jos. Perkins in Philadelphia. This atlas was first issued in 1824, with editions published every year until 1834. Each succeeding year new maps were added and others updated. Rumsey) Not much is known of Anthony Finley, other than his published work, but he was probably born around 1790. Judging from contributors to his atlases, he apparently moved in the same Philadelphia circles of engravers and compilers as other contemporary publishers such as Tanner and Mitchell. This beautiful hand colored ... morehistoric antique map of the State of Rhode Island would make a great addition to any collection. It measures 17" X 14.5" in the frame. It was professionally framed. And it's double matted. There are some small age spots on the map, which I tried to depict in the photos. They are to be expected in a map of this age and are not indicative of damage. The map opening in the mats is 9" X 11.5" The wooden frame is 3/4" wide X 3/4" deep. It will be promptly shipped from a 100% non-smoking home. Comparable maps, when they can be found sell for more than $200.00 unframed, so this is a good price if you're a map collector or just love old maps. I will be listing many more antique maps over the next week or so as we are downsizing our collection. I will only ship this map USPS Priority INSURED. So please wait for an invoice if you win the auction. Please email any questions before bidding.

On of the earliest appearance of a representation of an American Flag and one of the earliest maps to name the United States(in both French& Dutch! The title cartouche refers to the thirteen United States in both French and Dutch and is decorated by an American flag with thirteen stars; thus this is one of the earliest maps displaying the stars and stripes. The area mapped is from James Bay to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Atlantic ... morecoast to central Texas. There is a fascinating road running from Port Royal along the coast to Fort George. Near Penobscot Bay. Roads are not generally shown on a map of this scale at this time, making that quite unusual. Many towns. Rivers and other landmarks are located, as well as Native American tribes and state boundaries, which extend to the Mississippi River. It has been speculated that Reiner& Joshua Ottens originally made the plate for this map in 1755 under the title"Carte des possessions Angloises& Francoises du continent de l'Amerique Septentrionale" It was then acquired by Covens& Mortier and reworked to show the newly formed states and may have appeared as early as 1783. A New Map Of North America Dedictaed to his Highness Duke of Glocelter RARE EX++
hello.you are bidding on a rare map that came from my grandfathers wall. This map has been in our family as long as I have been alive and I am 44 years old. The following description of the map comes from a credible source in that it is brought to you by raremaps.com. Description: Nice example of Wells map of North America. Wells produced a lavish school atlas on the occasion of William Duke of Glouchester's schooling at Oxford. As such. This map rarely appears in early color. This wonderful and curious example of the map has no centerfold and may well have been issued separately as a teaching aid. The map is richly annotated with manuscript notes. Including the course of Drake's Voyage to California and extensive notations concerning the date of d discovery of at least 15-20 locations. Since th last of the notations show the ceding ... moreof the region just east of the Mississippi River along the Gulf Coast to the English in 1763 and a similar note and date near Quebec, it would seem that the map was used at approximately this date. The majority of the notes reflect late 16th to mid 17th Century discoveries. Wells map is a fascinating mix of contemporary information and inaccuracies. In identifying California as an Island, Wells was behind the times. His location of the Mississippi River as originating in Texas is also very inaccurate. However, his map is largely based upon the work of the Recollet missionary Louis Hennepin and faithfully displays Hennepin's discoveries. The shape of Florida is very odd. Along the East coast. Many of the early English settlements and American Colonial cities are shown. Wells also included annotations and dates of discovery. Please look at any and all pictures as they are a significant part of the description. Please message all questions before bidding. Thanks

1850 Cruchley Map of North and South America
1850 Cruchley Map of North and South America WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: America. Description: An attractive 1850 map of North and South America by George Frederick Cruchley. The map covers all of North America as well as South America from the Arctic to Cape Horn. In North America. Russian and British territories in Alaska and Canada are clearly noted. In South America, Chili extends southward only to the border of Patagonia, while Bolivia has a coast. Cruchley divides the territories and countries with color coding and notes major cities, rivers, mountains etc. Elevation is rendered in hachure. The map offers several elements of considerable cartographic interest. The disputed border between the United States and Canada in the Pacific Northwest is set firmly at the Columbia River- recognizing, not surprisingly, ... moreBritish claims. In the first half of the 19th century the Pacific Northwest was the last frontier in the century's long slaughter of the American beaver in the name of European fashion. Both the British, in the name of the Hudson Bay Company, and the Americans, championed by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company, were eager to claim monopolistic right over the region. Astor's establishment of Fort Astoria on the Columbia River only served to further tensions with the Northwest Company- the Pacific subsidiary of the Hudson Bay Company. The dispute escalated, giving rise to the Oregon Boundary Dispute and the American expansionist slogan'Fifty-four Forty or Fight! The dispute was not resolved until the 1846 Oregon Treaty which, through concessions on both sides, formally set the boundary at the 49th parallel. The name'Oregon' we note, appears nowhere on this map. Cruchley's map has not been updated to reflect this border change despite an 1850 note on the imprint. This map does however predate the Gadsden Purchase despite postdating the Mexican American War, consequently the R. Gila is the southernmost boundary of the United States. The 1850s we
1812 Pinkerton Map of the Western Hemisphere (North America and South America)
1812 Pinkerton Map of the Western Hemisphere(North America and South America) WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Western Hemisphere] Description: This is a scarce. Beautiful, and exceptionally interesting example of John Pinkerton's stunning 1812 map of the Western Hemispheres. The map is a representation of North America and South America from the perspective of the Western Hemisphere. Cartographically this map represents a notable attempt to combine cartographic speculation with new discoveries and political advocacy and is most interesting for its presentation of North America. Drawn at the height of British- American hostilities related to the War of 1812, the North American portions of this map heavily advocate for British interests. Despite being issued in 1812, the western boundary of American terminates ... moreat the Mississippi River- a clear rejection of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. There is a reason for this. By the turn on of the 19th century, it had become abundantly clear to everyone involved that the true wealth of North America lay in the fur trade, particularly the export of beaver pelts to the infinitely wealthy markets of Asia. By this time there were two forces in the fur trade, semi-independent American traders following in the footsteps of Louis and Clark and British traders operating under the jurisdiction of the Hudson Bay Company, whose territorial monopoly they were actively extending towards the Pacific. The key to exploiting this region was control of the Columbia River, which provided an easy access point to the interior. The explorations of Louis and Clark, as well as the acquisition of Louisiana and its tentative inclusion of the as yet unnamed Oregon region put the commercial ambitions of the Hudson Bay Company's Northwest Coast wing in jeopardy. Violent clashes between the Hudson Bay Company and American fur traders working in the region were common. Beyond the political elements of this map, there are various cartographic elements of extreme interest. P

California Mexico Southern U.S. 1599 Ruscelli rare antique map Burden #31
NUEVA HISPANIA TABVLA NOVA(Mexico/ Central America/ California) Issued Venice. 1561] 1599 by Ruscelli& Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1561 plate of 1598. Italian text on verso. A landmark map. Enlarged from Gastaldis 1548 map, and one of the most influential of this region in the 16th century. One of the earliest obtainable separately printed maps of the southern part of America. Here in it's most decorative state with mythical islands. This scarce late issue used the 1561-74 plate(a close examination of minute details reveals this) But for this 1598-99 issues by Sessa heirs(identical plate/map for both editions, just different title page dates) the engraver has added a large sailing ship, more place names in the interior, a long river into central Mexico, and numerous ... moremythical islands in the Pacific ocean(some of which are named- Rocca Parrida" La Anub" S. Tonias" Jada" and a series of islands which are unnamed) The plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and thus this map has no further appearances or printings. A survey of the Map Price Record reveals that Ruscelli maps from the 1598-99 printing are offered much less frequently than earlier printings(1561. 1562& 1574) at a ratio of approx. 1 later printing for every 5 offered from earlier editions. This would appear to indicate the later edition may have been printed in smaller numbers and due to increasing market competition, had a smaller distribution. Clean impression. Faint minor touches of offset, small ink stain at base of bottom blank margin which are in no way visually distracting or displeasing, otherwise entirely pleasing example. Sheet measures c. 12 1/2" W x 9 1/4" H. Engraved area measures c. 10" W x 7 1/4" H. Folio. Original fold line as issued. Burden. Mapping of North America. 31-state 3(of 3) noting that California is now named, as are the Sierra Nevadas and the Gulf of Mexico. Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers. V. 4, p
