The rosary has an approximate hanging length of 24 inches including the 2 inch crucifix that is marked A. Gale Inc. Sterling on the lower side of the cross. The same marking is on the back of the Blessed Mother medallion. The rosary weighs more than 63 grams excluding the case. An estate find. Listing: This listing is for a great antique french rosary. It has solid sterling chain holding it together and sterling caps on the larger beads. The centerpiece shows the true age of the rosary and probably dates to the 1800's. The cross is not original. I repeat, the cross is not original I added a cross in a similar style to the center piece but it is only an approximation. I received the rosary without a cross. You may change the cross to something more appropriate if you wish. Condition: Overall the original pieces are in great condition. The ebony wood seems a little dry but this could be from age. It's very rare to find these rosaries in the larger sizes, much less with a matching bloodstone crucifix. ● Fine French rosary made circa 1850-1880 ● Has rare matching crucifix carved from bloodstone. They are fairly lightweight material with natural inclusions. And appear to be hand carved rather than molded, with slightly varying sizes and shapes. For that reason I've concluded the following: ● The black ave beads are horn(from domestic livestock) Natural in color(the color goes all the way through) They're not heavy enough to be stone or gutta percha, and too early to be Bakelite. ● The blue pater beads are either real gemstone material such as lapis or sodalite. Or horn dyed to mimic them. One has a chip at the hole where it appears the blue color isn't just an applied surface coating. But when I say"lightweight. don't let that fool you. This is a very high-quality devotional, well made by expert artisans and well cared for over the decades. About all the metal: The crucifix. Connector, and sturdy chain have no hallmarks and I haven't tested them, but they may be silver(probably low grade) There's no corrosion or plate wear, so they're solid metal, and not steel or plated. French Rosary Cocoa Beads/Ceramic Paters 1950 HolyYear Medal With HandmadePouch
This is an interesting and well made vintage rosary made in France. With the Ave beads(Hail Marys) of super durable medium brown cocoa, as is indicated by the little aluminum medal attached near the front which reads: NIL COCO FRANCE/ EACH BEAD DOUBLE WIRED. The Paters(Our Fathers) are made of contrasting off white resin or ceramic and decorated with patinized concentric rings. This was probably a pilgrim's rosary sometime in its history because there is a 1950 Holy Year medal with a profile of Pope Pius XII on the front and with an image of St Peter Apostle holding the Keys of the Kingdom on the reverse. The crucifix is original to the beads and is in matched brown hardwood clinched in metal with separately applied corpus figure and INRI Title, marked FRANCE on its reverse. The center medal shows a profile of the Madonna in fine detail ... morecasting with the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the reverse. The rosary extends to 22 3/8" and fits snugly in the handmade brown felt pouch with red decoration which came with the beads- an unusual and collectible rosary ensemble.
