Though the face does look slightly Cambodian, so it'may' be Khmer, or at least Khmer-influenced. It is remarkably well made. The face itself is very well modelled with a very serene countenance. It appears to have been removed from a larger statue(Not by me! The ears are very long. A reflection of the Buddhas former life as a prince, when he wore very heavy jewellery. A very serene Buddha statue. It would look stunning in any setting. It stands 107 mm high. It weighs 419 grams. A pretty Buddha fragment. In very presentable condition. Please note. Forty years ago I dreamed of one day opening my own small museum of antiquities. Lost arts and handicrafts from Central America and Southeast Asia. Life happened and my museum has yet to open. It actually turned out I found myself living in Cambodia for the last twelve years and am now selling my home here in the States and retiring there. SO, the rare and special pieces I found during my years in Southeast Asia and that I bought back here I am now selling. I bought this in Cambodia back in 1997 along with a 400 to 500 year old Buddha statute(which is listed also. Item# 221209473997) I'd bought several pieces from the same vendor who had a small shop at the Russian Market in Phnom Penh. In fact I'd gotten quite friendly with him and over time met his family as I stopped by his shop every couple weeks to see if he'd acquired anything ... morenew. O ne day he brought me to his home. A 100 meters or so away from his shop, where he showed me this and the statute. I'd never seen such detailed work on a bronze piece before. I bought it. I love small detail work- always have- from the Sapa weavings of North Vietnam to the Lisu tribal works of Burma to our own Western art of M.C. Escher. The smaller the detail the better and to be able to create this in bronze is truly an art. As for value I'm going to let all of you decide. It's very heavy and I will not take it back to Cambodia. The reason it's up for sale at all. So bid knowing you'll have something no one else has. Bid knowing you'll not enter a friends home, a local gallery or even an Asian museum and see the same. GENUINE ANTIQUE INDIAN BRONZE TEMPLE OIL BUTTER LAMP RARE W/ COVER
This is a fantastic piece. Its a Genuine Indian Antique Temple or Butter Oil Lamp, measuring 15cm tall 9cm wide and 12.5cm deep, the lamp is a rare piece and amazingly still retains it original cover, the piece is elaborately decorated with a Buddha to the reverse with scrolling tendrils etc surrounding, the reverse has the same decoration with what looks like a beetle to the base, the rare lid has scrolling patterns to it, as for condition, it is very dusty/grubby but I have decided to leave it well alone and let the buyer do what they like to it, there is a small hole to the front(pictured) there are 2 more holes(I think these may have always been there(again pictured) the lid has some splitting around the central flame hole this is also tricky to fit without making worse, but a good genuine piece.
