THE BED IS LONGER THAN IN THE PICTURES AS WE HAVEN'T PUT IN THE SIDES. SOME ANCIENT WOOD WORM(long gone) AND SPLITS TO THE WOOD ALL PART OF THE INTEGRITY AND PATINA. Interesting the wooden pegs all around the outside I guess for webbing a net to support bedding. However I think a system of slatts with webbing or cord loops at both ends which hoop over the pegs and suspend the rigid wooden slats to take the mattress, the mattress would have a slight swing movement which could be good. This hand carved bedkey measures 18" long x 3" thick and has a handle measuring 13" and the rope opening measures 1" wide x 3" deep(made of a hardwood like maple but I'm not positive) To see a similar example. This 1700s hired man's bed was placed at the foot of the master's bed in New England. It is made of maple with mortise-and-tenon joints. Later owners added rectangular nails(and. Later, screws) to support some, but not all, of the joints(see photos) The bed measures 76 inches long, 22 1/2 inches wide, and 23 1/4 inches high. The original mattresses and roping have been replaced. This unique bed shows signs of wear and age, as well as some watermarks and discolorations, which add to its character as a piece of history. We are humbled to present this awesome solid birdseye& tiger maple Cannonball bed from the lovely Vermont summer home of a noted educator. This is the very height of New England Colonial furniture making. This boldly grained bed is made from the finest in maple on par with fine instrument grade wood except this in this massive abundance. In some of its lower panels it displays the ultra rare phenomenon of solid birdseye maple transitioning in grain to solid tiger maple varying in curly maple. Just before you retired you would fill your bed warmer with embers from the fireplace and place it under your coverlet to warm up your bed for the night. This mid 18th century bedwarmer is all hand made with a hammered brass pan with copper rivet construction with a hand chased and engraved design of stars and flaurel sprays on top. this 18th century old early original primitive horse ranch corral wooden gate is an exceptional piece of very early horse farm history. it has the best true early aged surface. the hinge post is slightly longer so it tilts a bit when standing. total measurements are 69 1/4'h x 49 1/4'w x 2 7/8' in thickness and weighs about 90 pounds. one of its highlights is the built in sliding gate latch which i think is just great and love about it. it is in all original as found untouched condition. some insignificant minor wood losses and anomolies consistant with a piece of this age but it is in nice stable and solid condition. the upper curved board does have an very early split which has an old wire repair which does not affect the integrety at all and i think just adds to its authentic character. this would look awesome as wall hanging ... morefolk art or a standing piece anywhere that can accomodate room for it. this would especially make for the most unique stunning bed headboard. its being offered for a pick up however i can assist with frieght shipping arrangements.

For your consideration is an extremely rare bed or folk art piece. I'm no expert. But I have had several dealers look at. In addition to the age, estimated at 1740-1750) there are several interesting features that make it unusual. Beginning with the size. It is almost the size of a normal baby bed. It sits 7" off the ground. The total width is 25" The length is 55" The board that serves as the bed is one hand-hewned piece that I estimate to be 22 1/2" wide. The joinery is mortis and tenon throughout. At the head. The carved pieces are moveable, and are able to slide a quarter inch or so horizontally. It appears that two of the top triangles have come off in the past and have been put back on with small nails. These aren't noticeable and you really have to look for them to see them.I counted five or six. Each corner ... morepost is distinctive with it's own character and flavor. Please refer to pics for more detail. It looks as if one inside rail was started to be carved with flowers and just stops about 25% down from the head. I am no expert. And in my best opinion and research, this is not a reproduction. I have not cleaned at all. And have left in it's original condition. It is overall a sturdy, one-of-a-kind piece that is stunning. Feel free to ask for more photos or come by and see in person. Any more information would also be appreciated. 12-19: I noticed two more things about this piece. The main board has a crack starting an inch or so from the headboard corner. This crack continues down at an angle towards the closest side. It stretches about halfway down the board where it buys up to the side rail. I can't tell if it is two pieces or not. I also noticed a couple of nails around the piece. It appears someone added one nail to each leg/post in the past. Most likely they did this to firm this up. 1-18-2014 Update: Okay. I have just received more information on this piece. Found in New England. This wonderful antique low-post doll rope bed/bedstead is 18th century, circa 1740-1760. It is all original, including its wonderful dry, untouched red painted surface. The thin roping or jute, used to crisscross the center of the frame as the support, is also original. The bed is beautifully constructed. It has hand chamfering and notches on the posts. And the headboard is simple with nice detail. The frame has mortise and tenon joints. The bedstead measures 16 1/2" long x 11 1/2" wide x 9" high. It is in very good condition. With no repairs of any kind. It has the best patina, showing good honest age-appropriate wear. It is wobbly, as most rope beds are that need tightening, which I am mentioning just for accuracy. It is solid cherry wood and measures 52" wide and 48 inches inside dimension on metal L bracket. You can even put a full size across the full wood frame if you wanted as long as you stabilize it with a piece of plywood or full board or planks. The length is ample enough for a full size as well being six foot 10 inches long.so you have lots to play with. I personally would put a full size on it. It is large enough. It is solid and strong with original brass bolt covers on it. The wood is lovely and the finials are original. Bought at an old homestead, it is a rare fine. Shipping for the bedstead varies due to destination. I have 2 wonderful shippers and 2 wonderful ... moregents. Who ship who give excellent reasonable prices. All our reliable and have used them for over 6 years. I can only ship to 42 states, some are too out of the way.so please ask. And are French Oak, or worse teak or walnut, and look'orange' or burgundy, too light, and just possess plain& simple, four-poster bed wrongness) Colour here is right- a Dark chocolate, however the flash photography makes it look horse-chestnut or dark coffee in some pictures. Youtube shows it better. It has the same satin-flat colour as the Bed of Ware, which, if this sort of thing is your bag, I heartily recommend you trouble to see. Google it, it's in the V&A. This is an antique children's bed. Best I can figure out is that it is from the late 1600s to early 1700s and it is from central or south india. This is the only information I was able to find on a bed this old!
